So in replying in another thread I was curious as to how much we are spending versus others in the conference for results, and here's the findings.

How this is calculated:

You can look up an athletic department's expenses with the equity in athletics tool by the department of education. It's super handy and full of interesting information. I'm using the 2015 expense numbers (probably aren't that different from 2016)

Rank Team Cost/Win Total Wins (2016) Total Expenses for Football
1 CU 1.7 10 17.03M
2 WSU 2.075 8 16.6 M
3 Stan 2.21 9 19.9 M
4 Utah 2.44 8 19.55 M
5 UW 2.64 11 29.13 M
6 USC 3.39 9 30.58 M
7 OSU 3.67 4 14.69 M
8 CAL 4.36 5 21.8 M
9 ORE 5.15 4 20.6 M
10 ASU 5.6 5 28 M
11 UCLA 6.7 4 26.8 M
12 ARZ 6.8 3 20.4 M

So there is the data.

The big winners were CU/WSU/Stan/Utah who were in the Top 25% for cost / win. CU takes the top spot spending only 1.7 Million for 10 wins.

The big losers were Oregon/ASU/UCLA/Arizona who were in the bottom 25% for cost/win all of which spent over 5 million dollars / win to sit their ass at home with no bowl. The biggest loser was Arizona/UCLA who spent a whopping 6.8/6.7 million per win for their respective 3/4 win seasons.

Would be interesting to see over a 10 year period. That smooths out the bad seasons or great seasons.

interesting. just curious, does this data take athletic department revenue into consideration? i imagine that might change the rankings a bit.

Revenue is there and well let met tell you those schools that are spending a lot are making a lot too, but just making money and not spending it I didn't factor in. I wanted to see what they actually spent from their revenue on football and what the results were.

Cougatron, I like the information and ideas you bring to the board. Almost always interesting. Like this stuff.

Your photo with your name is now needing to change.... that's scary! (in lots of ways) !! LOL
