is reporting that Garfield High School coach Ed Haskins is in the running for a WSU coaching job. I find it strange that Kent would take someone from Seattle as an assistant coach. The Seattle area is not that big and most players from Seattle will not come to Pullman. He does have a Player Dejon Davis a top rated guard who just decommited form Washington. However i think that Haskins is is not a great choice even though he is familiar with Pullman.

Well i just looked at brand X posts and i am being out voted. The posts there seem to think that it would be a great hire.I confess to really not knowing anything about him but like that he likes to play pressure defense.I guess people here know him a lot better than i do.

Disagree. I wouldn't expect Haskins to start some pipeline to Pullman but one good 3 star kid per year out of that area could really help and doesn't seem unreasonable. Especially considering we already have Flynn Franks Daniels from the west side, and Hawk just finished a great career. I don't believe WSU can ever have success without getting a few more players from in state than has been the norm.

i am glad you disagree as i do not know the man. If the reports on him, that he can relate to these kids are correct, then they may follow him. If parents like him than these" Kids who are not angels" will benefit from being in Pullman . Those are Haskins words not mine.

I don't know much about Ed Haskins but he's the younger brother of the former Cougar basketball player Aaron Haskins and apparently walked on when he was at WSU as a student and worked for WSU. At least he has some significant ties.

There is nothing wrong with hiring a high school coach especially if he could convince some of the talent to come along. I would believe it when I see it though in terms of getting Seattle Metro kids who other offers to come to Pullman.

Well Raveling got some excellent big city kids to come to Pullman. If Haskins can relate to these kids they will come. He would also be able to relate to other big city kids and their parents. The parents want them to get an education and be with someone who will mentor their kids.

I know nothing of Ed Haskins except by reputation, but that is excellent. There was a time not too many years ago when Spokane teams like Ferris were very successful at state despite big talent deficits. I asked a former player about it and he said it was coaching. No really good coaches in the Metro league. Also there was a time when academics at Garfield were so bad that no PAC 12 school could take the kids. I think the emergence of coaches like Haskins has had a lot to do with with a turn around in both hoops success and academics.

Well i now vote for him. He sounds like he would be just what the program needs at this time . An influx of youth with a coach who can relate to today s kids. That will open a lot of doors and parent s hearts.

Never any guarantees but sometimes the most obvious solution is the one right in front of you. I never would have thought of Haskins, but once he came up it looks like a no brainer if he will take the job

I would like to learn more about him but it does seem like a no brainer.

Yes it seems like a no brainer. If selected ,one hopes that he proves to be an outstanding recruiter. On the other board, some one calls his two top guards "one and done s" ? Also that they may be going to Stanford.? I have heard so much about" one and done s" for many players.. Some of these guys may not work at the D 1 level. It looks like he may be one of the coaches selected. If so ,they will need a coach with ties to the rich California areas or other fertile recruiting areas. The fact that he likes to coach defense is an obvious plus.

There is top junior on the team in 6'9 Brooks who averaged 16.8 pts and 8.4 rbs .per game. So if Haskins is selected and gets one of the guards and their top big man next year,it would be nice. i am curious in that it was said that PC 12 schools in the past would not touch these guys. Now one or both guards may be headed to Stanford?. Have the academics at Garfield HS improved that much or is Stanford lowering their tough entrance requirements to build better athletic teams? However one does not know how true the Stanford possibility is. It may be a couple of little twits on Brand X spewing negative garbage. They are Bone worshipers who try and stir negative stuff up and are protected by their monitors.

Probably a little of both. There certainly was a time when Garfield academics were really bad. Not sure when it started to change or whether Haskins was a driver, but definitely way better than years ago

Stanford hasn't budged on their requirements and athletes are still required to go through the application process.

If we weren't on the list before as in top 5 it's unrealistic to believe under any circumstance we could get a 2017 recruit to WSU unless it was a Tinkle situation. Haskins might get us in the door to talk or maybe even a visit but still a long shot in the end.

It sounds like Haskins is a pretty good coach with Seattle area contacts. If he's also hungry that could result in some good recruits. If he can fix our defense all the better.

It looks like Haskins has been following WSU basketball and Ernie Kent on twitter. I saw a video of him and he is a very religious man, which goes over well with many parents. It does seem that he will be one of the new assistant coaches.

A couple of points. Not calling Ernie a Bennett type of defensive guy, but I saw guys working hard on D this year. Lack of foot speed by our bigs was a much bigger problem than lack of defensive effort. As for recruiting, I will put this out. Would you rather get one Klay Thompson, or two Davonte Lacy's. Certainly not as simple as that but there are a lot more Lacy's than Klays. In addition I have a hunch that a guy like Haskins might have a better eye for kids with upside than some guy from Cali who is always chasing the blue chippets

I have no problem with this hire if coach Kent feels he is a good coach/ good person who can help with the team coaching. Recruiting is a fickle prospect at best, AAU coaches come and go and today's kids have short memories. His coaching abilities should be our primary concern with any added recruiting benefits being the icing on the cake. Unless we are looking just for a quick fix, which at this point I guess wouldn't be all that bad either.

I was hoping that a couple of posters will know about his coaching abilities than the rest of us.I have not watched his teams play enough. The few clips i saw were of a title game where of course his team was playing hard and looked good but it was hard to tell if they just had the better players?

Ed Haskins is perhaps the finest Prep Coach in Seattle. He is all 100% about the student/athlete. This would be a big time hire. He has coached all over and is a top defensive coach.

Lots of connections to everyone in that area. Those who think Seattle has only one player a year are flat wrong. BTW in excess of 50% of all WSU students are from West of the Cascades.

He is a coach with teriffic recruiting ties and has players. Everyone knows him from the Pro players to the grade school kids.

Garfield had the same number of National Merit Scholars as Mercer Island last year.

I have never met or coached against him but have never heard anything but positives about him.

All great to hear. Would assume something gets done pretty quick if it's going to happen.

He sounds like the right man for the job.If he works out ,perhaps he will become the coach in waiting? He is in his fourties and could spend a long time on the Palouse. it is more gratifying to me to see the number of National Merit Scholars coming from Garfield. Wonderful to hear. Sign him up Ernie ,he deserves a big raise and a move into big time college athletics.

I do remember that June Daugherty hired Mo Hines when she was hired as WSU coach. He was the name in women's AAU in the Seattle area. He was supposed to be able to bring in players that he had coached and helped to develop. Unfortunately, he struck out on just about every Seattle athlete he recruited to WSU.

Haskins is not Hines and the lack off success of Hines has no bearing on Haskins. But, it is something to think about.

As the final four is underway, this brings up the name of Frank Martin, the head coach at South Carolina. He was a successful high school basketball coach that became an assistant under Bob Huggins. There are high school coaches that are great coaches and transition smoothly to college. Haskins could be a great hire, or not. It is an interesting name to think about though.

One never knows if HS coaches will work out. Some turn out to be great coaches and some fade into the woodwork.I think that we will soon find out into what category, Ed Haskins falls. The two coaches who were just released are long time, aging, and mediocre college coaches.

Yep. One doesn't know until it plays out. It is why I wrote that Haskins could be a great hire, or not. I guess he could not be worse than Graham and Dominguez were at recruiting. The Cougars did need to do something.

It is always a gamble whether the guy is coming from high school or has great credentials. I like the odds better considering what we know about Haskins then taking some guy from Cali or back east based on his recruiting to a different school

Interestingly enough,Ed Haskins just prominently gave huge kudos to Oregon s Coach Martin on his twitter. Is it just admiration for a very good coach or is big money making another move? Black helicopters? The fun and games continue as the season is coming to a big conclusion next week.

Sorry about that. Coach frank martin is coach of the gamecocks. I guess waking up too early makes for cuddled thinking.Anyway it was a great twitter. i should learn from reading trumps twitters :)

Really good points all around here. I think in reality, WSU needs to do something and this seems not only like a smart paper hire, but could pay dividends long term.

We should hear something in the next 2-3 days. i will guess that Kent has probably selected his two coaches. He will have to sit down with Moos and talk contracts. He needs to follow up on potential recruits and hopefully involve one of his selected coaches in the recruiting process before these guys commit elsewhere
