Game Thread. WSU vs. BSU

Too late for that. They have to throw now. Mateer is a bad pocket passer. He is overwhelmed. He needs to be on the move to throw so he has run/pass option.

2 sacks in a row. Tell me more about poor man’s Tebow or Heisman candidate…. Arbuckle needs to coach. There is no scheme. Not an air raid team. The qb isnt a pocket passer. Not really a running team, the OL isnt great. What is the scheme??? Broken Play Offense??? It is a collection of plays, not a scheme.
Hard to run anything with an OL that can’t block.

We have missed guys open... haven't run well outside... our quick outs were fine, but we quit.

All in all, our offensive looks stupid.

Our defense looks out of position.

I swear... we could have won this game.

Maybe they’ll take a knee instead of running up the score. You know since we invites them into the conference.

Two things. If you can’t pass protect, you keep adding blockers until you can. If you can’t, well, dont throw it.

Second thing, search Coach Codutti on youtube. He runs a scheme that runs the ball with bad OL.

There are things you can do. Dickfore and Arbuckle are choosing not to do them.

Or you can recruit better. Or coach better. They chose not to do those.

But yet it didn’t happen. Cant wait to see Dickfore tell everyone he was outcoached again.

Touchdown. Wheels are off. The route is on.

Exactly, stop clearing the backfield

The only goals left for this game are to keep Jeanty under 300 and not get anyone hurt. I’m not sure we can do the first.

In todays good news, Fresno state doesn’t look that tough.

The good news is that the rest of the games really are winnable.

Boise State is just better than us.

Why do our coaches fail to spread things out? Run and roll wide?

They dont need backs or TEs. They need to add bigger bodies. The backs and TEs arent big enough.

The offense is being exposed the same way BYU did to Leach all those years ago. Keep Mateer in the pocket. Make him beat you as a drop back passer. The OL wont help. The OC wont change. 7 sacks and counting.

Weakest schedule ever. Ever. A one loss season is possible in spite of Dickfore. Not because of him.

Couldnt execute the tush push qb sneak

Watched the game with my 88 year old dad. He summed it up succinctly: “ This is not a good or well coached football team “.

Dickerts coaching took us out of this game
Dickert doesn’t coach the offense, Arbuckle does. His game plan stunk tonight and Mateer didn’t execute. The defense hung in for a while but you were gonna need 40 to win this game. Not good enough.

Careful. The Dickfore lovers like MI wont stand for this!!! They’ll call your dad names and shame him.

How dare you say anything against the Church of the Right Way!

You still aren't worthy of licking the ballsweat off Dickert's jockstrap. It's an ugly game and definitely a couple bad coaching decisions, but we lost this game because we faced a team with a guy who is going to be in New York. Maurice Clarette and Ahman Green are the only two running backs that I've seen that are as dominant as Jeanty. The guy is a freaking stud.

Last comment before another beer then to bed. Absolutely no reason to have our starters in down 4TD's. What if Mateer got hurt?

Put in the second team and get them some reps. Terrible coaching decisions all night, this is the cherry on top.

Cougs didn’t lose to a lesser opponent. Something that’s was infuriating in the past. Teams have bad games. Turn overs and dropped balls can be corrected. On go the next game. Go Cougs.

Can’t wait to see this dude running through our defense again in his draft highlights. Yippee.

Biggs is celebrating right now and has been waiting 5 weeks for this moment so he could thump his chest because he’s so insecure about his own “career” failure. F’n loser.

That is NOT the main reason we lost this game. It was one factor but not the primary one. The D was OK enough for 3 quarters against him. The O let them down. D was on the field too much.
The main reason we lost was basically everything about the offense: Mateers decision making, Mateers accuracy issues, terrible O line, very terrible OC play calling etc.
Dickert is a good guy and great motivator but he still has much to learn.

It was a team loss without a doubt. The offense, defense and coaching all sucked.

Mateer was off and our offensive line was abhorrent.

All that wouldn’t have mattered as much if we aren’t getting gashed by a future NFL running back who will be a Heisman finalist this year.

Dickert and Arbuckle absolutely have some soul searching to do because their decisions made things worse, but it was only a matter of time before Jeanty was going to do some damage.

The month of October will reveal whether or not things are fixable or if there is a deeper issue with the coaching staff. As I mentioned in another thread, Nick Saban recently said that sloppy wins are the kiss of death to a team that is trying to figure itself out. Everyone says the right things but deep down, they think everything is going to be okay and they don't work on their issues as much as they should.

And for all the hand wringing, #8 Oregon gave up 34 points to BSU and their defense is only giving up 13.5 ppg in their other games. Jeanty rushed for 192 yards against the Ducks....so y'all can f#ck off with the talk that he isn't dominant. The ducks were lucky to beat BSU. As much as it pains me to say it, the Broncos have a pretty damned good team that will go toe to toe with the best teams in the country. Bad coaching decisions, poor OL play and bad tackling made the game ugly.....but we lost this game because a Heisman candidate RB had his way with us. There is a lot of cleanup to do, but we aren't facing another guy like Jeanty this year.

My take Jeanty. He should win the Heisman but won't because of being in a non power 4 conference. Travis Hunter will because he plays both ways. Jeanty should though, he is dominant. He will go to the NFL. I question how high he will go. His running style puts a lot of wear and tear on him. RBs drop will all of a sudden drop off a cliff. His style doesn't seem sustainable for a second contract. I hope I'm wrong. He seems like a good kid.

Jeanty is a gimmick due to his stature: low center of gravity combined with being as wide as he is tall. I saw guys wrapping up but unable to corral him because he's too damn wide.

What top 15 teams will do is a) have more hats to the ball and b) be able to grab him by the jersey jersey/arm/leg with their hands and at least slow him enough to allow help to come. Virtually all of our attempts we're 1v1 with Jeanty.

All credit to him: he is still strong and fast, but he won't get as much mileage against top talent.

He ran for 197 yards against Oregon. They are a Top 10 team. This notion that he isn't going to do well against top tier competition is ignoring what we saw yesterday and what he's done all year. I do wonder if he can hold up in the long term. He was already looking a little gimpy against us last night.

Agree with almost everything, but Mateer wasn't off- that's who Mateer is. At this point.

Hopefully he can fix some stuff like reading the D presnap better and downfield accuracy over the next two weeks.

Oregon isn't as billed. They have yet to play anyone and when they do there will be a reckoning.

First back off the board top 15 pick IMO. He’s a day 1 3 down pro bowl caliber back. Closest thing I’ve seen since Adrian Peterson is Javonte Williams. Jeanty has better vision and elusiveness than Williams though and he was on his way to becoming one of the best backs in the league before his injury. Jeanty is special.

He’s a one read QB unless we’re playing a shit defense and he knows he’s going to have time. He’s fun to watch but a long way to go to be an elite QB.

Yeah I concur there. I don't have the stomach to watch the replay, but from my 12 hour-old hazy memory.:

Seems like on some of the blitzes Mateer had time for a quick read and throw. Was it him or our receivers not adjusting to the obvious blitz? Screen shots didn't show what they were doing. And while he hung in there a few times later in the game, he seems to have "take off" on the front of his mind all the time. Maybe some designed rollouts with a pulling guard would have combatted the blitz, and given him time to read while having the run option there. That one 2nd (?) down play - he rolls, nobody is within 20 yards of him, and he throws a well-covered pass. WTH?

Did our TE(s) even play? There's your blitz outlet.

Seems like we never ran it outside. Pitches, bootlegs, jet sweeps? Why no I formation on some of those 3rd/4th and shorts? The 4th down on our own 28 was horrible. Shit BSU had what - 8 guys on the line? A pitch or bootleg or anything other than straight up the gut. Or maybe just punt.

Aside from the horrible interception, I thought Mateer had a pretty good game throwing. 26/37, 327 yards, 2 TD's. Not a fan of his sidearm fastball motion, but I guess we are stuck with it.

I can see future opponents watching this tape and blitzing the shit out of us after this debacle. kind of the reverse of the Leach-era "drop 8".
