Gonzaga to Pac-12

GU will make PAC 8/9 even more attractive to Memphis, and a Media Deal worth even more then 17 mil per team per year, if they get Memphis, and even more attractive to Memphis, IF PAC offers more then 2.5 mil and instead offers 23 mil to Memphis.

BSU, SDSU, Gonzaga, Utah St, CSU, Maybe Memphis, WSU, what a BBALL conference. PAC 8 could easily get 3,4,5,6 NCAA tournament bids, out of 9 teams, each year, season.

GREAT, AWESOME ADD for the PAC 8,9

This is a massive win for the P12. It opens the door to something I had spoken about a while back. WSU and OSU needed to rebuild the P12 with the best collection of West Coast schools, and they've done (or are in the process of doing) exactly that.

Football is obviously the most important financial asset to a program, but a strong Olympic sports conference is critically important as well.

Well this catches me off guard. Suffice it to say that I am not a fan. Not just Gonzaga, but any non-FB playing school. Oh well, it is what it is. I see that they (and other schools) will keep half of their NCAA tournament units. Will be interesting to see the rest. How about BB TV revenues? I'm sure Gonzaga will continue their high-profile non-league schedule and will keep all that money of course. Good thing the Pac-12 didn't operate that way or our war chest would be quite a bit smaller. We had better not be sharing future FB media money with them.

Summation: Let's not count all these sheckles that Gonzaga will bring to the conference yet. Certainly, attendance and league TV exposure will go up, so there's that.

Gonzaga has to be pulling at Memphis now. Even UNLV I would imagine is probably reconsidering in some ways. This basketball conference is going to be very good. And with performance based revenue and new tv deal it’s probably getting more enticing. Would love to see Memphis fb/bball (whatever travel partner) and St Mary’s Bball come over to push bball over the top. Would be lots of bidders on that conference. Also wonder how realistically Tx St. and Sac St are being considered. There is almost no way MWC didn’t take a real run at them if they are considering Tarleton St. So either those two schools just have hope eternal, or are holding for something that may be tangible soon. Sacramento is the #20 tv market and would pay 100% of fees plus money to get in like a smaller SMU deal.

I wouldn't say "critically important". Somewhat important maybe. Not counting basketball that is. That is quite important.

The "other" sports are an important piece of our campus vibe. People turn out for soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, baseball, etc. Being represented in the best West coast sports conference keeps our brand in the minds of more students, which is significant.

It's definitely good for hoops and Olympic sports. As long as they only get a small percentage or nothing when it comes to football money then it makes sense overall.

Of course I can't get to the Atlantic article Kurt linked. I will certainly be interested in how this is structured. Regardless of my opinions on all of the realignment moves, including future ones, I hope that all the financial workings become public knowledge someday. Everything from the state and use of the war chest, who paid what on exit fees, what all the future revenue-sharing terms are. After all, contrary to what some think, my accountant brain still works pretty well. This would/will be interesting reading for this Coug.

Oh, forgot to mention - Hey Mark Few - is WSU still a bottom feeder? And I hope your kids got their Mom's looks and teeth. Having no idea what she looks like, but nowhere to go but up compared to you.

Agreed...
College football has become a regional sport based in 5 or 6 states. By the end of September there is +40 states that don't have a team with a realistic chance of even making the playoffs, and the bowl games have been totally devalued. At some point most schools will have to accept that they can't compete in the modern college football landscape, and focus on other sports. College football will be like college wrestling in 20 years. We need to start looking at men's soccer and lacrosse.

I approve of your post.....
I think we can hate Gonzaga while still appreciating their brand adds value to the conference, and can potentially attract a Memphis.

That said my biggest question is will Costco in Spokane still carry Coug gear.

Supply and demand. Of course they will.

this is far from a guarantee. many small catholic schools with more money located in more talent rich regions have fallen off after runs of success when their legendary coach retired
At least Gonzaga closed down the safe house for boy-molesting priests that used to be on campus. Or I assume they did.

Maybe so, but the blueprint is there, and the campus and region have embraced them. They're perfectly situated for a strong hoops program. Growing city, no competition with professional sports teams, basketball is the top sport on campus, and they have an elite history.

really nice facilities as well.
So is Gonzaga going to end their medical partnership with the uw and instead partner with WSU's Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, all pretty much across the street (or river). Think dipshit Schulz thought to throw that into the conversation?
