Alrighty… I'll break the proverbial ice. The kid looks solid. His stat's dropped this last year but seems like everything is right, mechanically. We aren't beating anyone out of any significance but this kid is, like I said, solid. He should have more offers, IMHO. His hudl is pretty dang good. Mobile.

Ian Book

his hudl

That they offered Book with the group of uncommitted offers they had out hopefully says something about what they think of his potential. Seems to throw with a lot of accuracy and moves well.

I do wonder if they might want 2 QBs in this class.

Re:Unless we lied to him......

Unless we lied to him, he was quoted as saying we told him he's the only QB in this class.

If you want to stretch that into saying a grayshirt wouldn't really be in this class, then I suppose that would be technically correct. But it might raise some questions for him, as far what we told him? And would invited walk on QBs fall into a similar gray area?

As I understand things, we told him he would be only QB in this class. And he said, as long as we stuck to that, he was sticking with us, and recruiting was over for him.

Take that all FWIW.

I'm curious. What is the logic for you thinking 2 QB's is possible? Is it that you just don't think Book is worthy or have you heard something… or something else?

I am guessing it is because we had two QB's transfer out before last season. So, the Cougars don't have the depth they otherwise would have.

I'm expecting only one QB for the 2016 class. We have 3 scheduled to be on campus this fall, plus any additional walk-ons that may arrive.

The "real" recruiting for 2016 begins now, as the QB designee starts trying to lobby people that he knows, for whom we have offers out. He noted that he already knows several of the people that we have offered.

CML has no problem with putting out several early QB offers and telling each offered kid that he would love to have him, but that he understands that it is a big decision for the kid, and we will take the first kid who accepts our offer...and then all QB offers are off the table. That has been how CML has handled QB recruiting for virtually his entire career as a HC.

Every year we will have a QB in the class, and every year they all will get a shot to show what they can do in practice and earn the job.

So kids like Bruggman won't want to wait and see if they can earn a shot. Which is interesting...because had Bruggman stayed he might have had a shot to play last year with CH going down. There were 3 games + rest of USC that Falk played in.

There was an opportunity for him, but he decided to bail early.

So every QB should come in and prepare if they are the starter because who knows. One day the opportunity may be there.

Going into next year, we would have Falk (RS JR), Bender (RS Soph), Hillinski (RS FR), Book (true FR).

Seems like pretty normal depth to me.

They'll probably add a walk on somewhere, but I don't see them adding a second scholarship QB to this class.

I think anyone forgetting Connor Ennis, would be remiss, as well.

But I will say, I see that Bruggman left a decent hole. Nothing earth-shattering but certainly there.

QB's of his limited stature (height) don't get the ranking hype as their 6'4 counterparts, so the fact that he's as highly regarded as he his suggests (to me) that he's a pretty good player.

I agree. His three star ranking is likely do to his height. Plus, do people remember Marcus Mariota was ranked a three star by both Scout and Rivals?

Isnt Falk a RS soph this fall?

If Apodaca doesn't split, he very well could have started when CH went down.

He had an extra session of Spring ball under his belt.

I think Apodaca left because he was already behind Falk and Bruggman.

Clements, Apodaca and Bruggman all left. That was three QBs in a row, which was a pretty big hole.

Adding another HS guy will be next to impossible given that we have Falk (RS So), Bender (RS Fr), Hilinski (Fr) and Book (verbally committed) in the fold. if any of these guys bolt, and depending on the timing of their departure, I'd say a JC QB might (emphasis on might) be a possibility. More likely a walk-on will fill the hole.

I see your point, but I think 2 of those 3 are addition by subtraction. Clements, Apodaca and even Brown, weren't going to see play time. I'd wager if those guys were here, Falk still would have played last year and be ahead of them now, even after CH broke his leg/ankle/whatever. They weren't the right caliber. So yeah, they were bodies out there and they left holes, but they weren't going to play, IMHO. But I don't see anyone leaving, either. They are all coming in, knowing competition is wide open, it's up to them and the weight on their shoulders to play the best and win the position. Clements and AA were a part of the transition between coaches. These guys are all CML.

Now Bruggman is a head-scratcher… Who really knows what's going on there but by all accounts he could be seeing play time right now… he could be seeing play time in Louisville, for that matter… Something is up there and I do see his departure as a hole.

I'd also say this current situation isn't sliding by the younger guys. They all realize Bruggman left them a great opportunity. They don't want to do the same thing.

I don't know about a JC… the timing would have to be pretty terrible. We have quite a stable of QB's maturing. If Falk or Bender quite in the near future, then yeah, I can see that. But if something like a "defector" happens 1-2 years out, I don't see a need, personally.
