So? The cost of everything goes up over time. During Covid the cost of moving some 40’ shipping containers hit as high as 20k. Companies ate it. They’re a fraction of that now. Life goes on. Enjoy your red herring.

What difference does it make if Scott Bessent is the smartest guy in the history of the world if he's not going to act on it? Specifically, when repeatedly asked (during his confirmation hearing) whether he would advise President Trump against enacting policies he believed were harmful to the American people, Bessent failed to provide a clear affirmative response. His evasiveness suggests a lack of independence which would be a critical quality for a Treasury Secretary tasked with ensuring sound economic policy.
Expertise in monetary policy is not just about holding correct theoretical views, it also demands the resolve to act on those views, even under political pressure, a resolve yes-man Bessent appears to lack.

Meanwhile Bessent is out there saying this was all part of a grand plan to create leverage, but Trump himself contradicted that, admitting the bond market’s “tricky” sell-off and comments from folks like JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon about recession risks pushed him to act.
Earlier Bessent had flown to Florida to urge Trump to stop raising the stakes with tariffs and focus on trade deals to calm markets. Bessent had also previously said that tariffs would be negotiable but Trump shot that down the same day, insisting tariffs would hit on schedule unless deals were already done. These contradictions hardly seem like the sign of a guy with “full authority.”
