hire both Zach Arnett and Jeff Schmedding as Co-Coordinators making $550,000 a piece...then hire another DB and DL coach making $375,000 a piece and stay within the current budget with 4 coaches instead of 5. Make sure the other two can recruit.

Why? If you’re allowed the extra coach use it. Having co-coordinators is stupid. Hire one guy to solely be the DC. Phelps has been good while here no need to get rid of him. Shavers and McBath are the two we should question.
Not using a 5th coach allows you to pay four....more. Say one of them is hired after two years...The loyal DC gets a significant pay raise as a reward. I didn't say get rid of Phelps. Both Arnett and Schmedding can coach linebackers or defensive backs.
We could always increase our budget by fans giving more money to the athletic department so we can pay our coaches more and still have the extra coach. I just like the co coordinators idea. Wulff tried it and it was bad. Not great this year either. And it’s hard on me because I don’t know who to yell at.
Depends on which coaches are bringing in good talent in numbers. If 5 coaches are bringing in 12-13 defensive players per year...that's 2.4-2.6 players per coach. Just a slight bump brings it to 3 or 3.25. Having two young coordinators might bring some excitement. Just an idea. A lot of teams have Co-Coordinators including Houston.
You do not cut recruiters or the recruiting budget and expect a better outcome. It is an arms race. You have to keep up with your opponents. So, cutting a police force by 10% so you could pay the rest more would give you better police protection? Recruiting is about coverage.
It’s hard to track the exact numbers but they each seem to be pulling in two or three.
I get it. But considering that we’ve had a hard time repacking Manning, Mastro, Salavea and Wilson, I’d rather not go short handed on recruiting.
That's why you don't cut the budget or the amount of visits. How do you know what current coaches have identified and then recruited players who have made a positive impact of the defense. One coach might of said that he brought in 3 players and two of them have quit after a year? I think it's more about excitement. The kind of excitement that the coordinators from the 5th and 33rd ranked defense in the country. Schmedding beat Air Force.

What is this tens of millions for facilities you are referring to? Tell us more about this, as well as 55,000-seat empty stadiums. You get that we're still paying off bonds used to finance the facilities built years ago, with much lower revenues than projected from the bullshit Pac-12 Network, right?
That's maintaining the current budget of $1.85m for defensive staff. Just split 4 ways instead of 5.
No on is saving anything and there would still be 9 assistants on staff. You just wouldn't go to 10. The special teams coach would still be helping out with linebackers and that's your 5th coach on defense. The budget is still the same $1.85 mil. $550,000, 550,000, 400,000, 350,000 plus whatever they pay Brock to help out with the linebackers. Roc might make a good special teams/ linebacker coach. You wouldn't be taking any money off the table.

How many different ways can the other posters explain it to you? Recruiting is about splitting up duties. If you cut a person all the coaches have to do more. Paying them more will not make them more efficient. Having an extra person allows the duties to be divide to a more manageable amount, making all of them more efficient. I tried to explain it without the name calling. Other that I usually disagree with have explained it well to use and yet you continue to defend a position that is not dependable.

Oregon State has 4 on the defensive staff and is ranked higher than us. How is that done? The identified the players they wanted and didn't spend much time on players that weren't going to come. If you want to argue that a molehill is some insurmountable mountain....go ahead. Paying the right hires more money is money well spent. Once again....how do you know for a fact that a Ken Wilson isn't pulling in 4-5 quality recruits while one of the other coaches is getting 0-1 or hasn't identified a legit recruit in years? I've been following recruiting since 1979 and don't know my self unless schools announce them. What happens when you tell the world Wilson personally recruited these 15-20 players on the team? He gets ripped off by Oregon who pays him $100,000 more.
They have the same number of total coaches as WSU. One of their coaches coach only special teams. They did not cut a recruiter as you suggest. Give up your ridicules argument. Do you really think if you had a valid argument so many would jump on you?
Get the facts straight first before arguing what's really going on. Where did I suggest WSU cut a recruiter? I was suggesting that you don't know how productive each coach truly is during the recruiting process and I know you can't prove it. OSU only has 4 coaches dedicated to the defense...otherwise t all coaches have areas and recruit within those areas no matter what the position. What I proposed is no different than what OSU has on this page. They did this intentionally in order to pay their defensive staff more money individually so other teams would be likely to rip them off once they've proven they can coach/recruit. It's a very smart preventative measure that I wish WSU had before the Ken Wilsons began disappearing.

They have a Head Coach, 4 defensive coaches, 1 special teams coach, and 5 offensive coaches. WSU has a Head Coach, 4 offensive coaches, 5 defensive coaches, and an 1 special teams/defensive coach. Where was I wrong? Same number of coaches. How do you save money. You can pay some more and some less that is all. I did not call you names. You said I need to get my fact straight. I was alluding to OSU's defensive staff and yes ...they only have 4. That's all. I never alluded to saving money....just spending more money to keep the defensive staff around. I've had a great year and will have another great year. Thank you. Didn't say you called me a name. Should of heard what Biggs called me when I suggested that Harsin and Wilcox be Co-Head coaches back in 2008'. I don't take these things personally. But really. are we so much better off with 10 assistant than 9? We were truly better off when they had Mastro, Wilson and Salave'a. How many wouldn't give up a tenth assistant to have them on the staff?
