Interesting article this morning on Kassidy Woods and his move to an inside slot receiver. He is 6-4 220 which makes him rather different from our other inside receivers. The article talks about the importance of blocking from the inside position and also mentions that he presents a big target.
All of this made me wonder why the inside receivers have mostly been fairly small quick guys. I get the importance of quickness but this article made an interesting case for big and strong.

We have more depth on the outside now, which allows us to move someone like Woods inside.

This is pretty much the reason. In the system we run if you have 4 big fast guys you put all 4 on the outside and rotate them periodically.

So for the inside you can take smaller, faster guys (which there are many) and plug them in.

But since we have an embarrassment of riches at the Outside with Patmon, Martin, Jackson, Winston etc. etc. we have the luxury of putting an outside guy inside.
