Listened to his press conference may well be the best he's had since he took the job.

Clarified early on Falk is the starter
Said if anyone whines he'll cut them, waited too long last year to cut whiners
Need to shrink Falk's options

In general far more engaged in answering questions and publicly creating expectations. Maybe this loss has had an effect on him. Too bad it took that loss to get here.

"need to shrink Falk's options"

Awesome. Nothing like firing on 4 of 8 cylinders to energize a fan base! Should make opposing DC's jobs a dream too!

What's next? Don't field a return person at all on punts, just let it go where it goes?

Hold on, that might actually be a pretty good idea!

Probably better to do a few things well, than many things poorly. I agree.

You know… It would be interesting to have a candid conversation with Harrell, right now. Is it really this hard to grasp or is it truly just QB's putting too much pressure on themselves? Gotta be a head scratcher for him, I'd think.

It's probably more about Leach calling the plays than Falk.... You guys know that QB's do check with their coaches if they see something on defense right?

....All this is is instead of Falk just changing the play via what he sees, its him reading the defense and then signalling to Leach on what he wants to do. Leach then decides yay or nay...

I agree completely that the press conference and Leach's post game interview were some of the best appearances that I've seen from him since he arrived in Pullman. His quotes about whining were reminiscent of the old Mike Leach.

Also, I didn't interpret his comments about limiting Falk's options as criticism. It was obvious that there were too many substitutions, getting signals in from the sideline took too long, etc. Falk was indecisive. The WR's weren't exploding off the line due to the weather and because they weren't completely sure of their assignments. That was clear.

Maybe I am just reading the body language wrong but I got the distinct impression from Leach's post-game and Monday pressers that he was as stunned and depressed by the loss as we were. There seemed to me to be a subliminal 'Holy crap, we've got a lot of work to do with this squad' message in his performance. He is normally pretty dead-pan but, to me, seemed more subdued than usual. Those who know me well know that my social skills are marginal at best and I might well be wrong but that is my impression for what it is worth.

Also agree that reducing the play calling a bit is a wise move. We seem to tend to forget that Falk and Bender are still young and need time to gain a rapport with the receiver corps and the running backs. SC is perfectly correct that we need to use those plays we do well and temporarily put on the shelf the others for the time being. Once a core set of plays is established then we can add to it as others are established.

Couldn't agree more. Been telling coworkers this all morning... Leach appeared to be at a loss for words, clearly as stunned as we are. His usual remedy is to "roll the f**k outta somebody", but my impression is that he has already done this with no positive effect.

Rutgers is going to be interesting. I didn't cancel my plane ticket. I'm going, I'm excited as hell to see the east coast, with my new custom WSU jersey, and I'm going to positively represent my school win or lose.

Seems like both our teams are imploding... Which makes me worried... If two imploding teams face each other than the universe might explode as well.. Because science...

At this point we have no choice but to hope and pray that is how Leach felt.

I'm not as concerned with Leach's reaction, we've always known he's practically an emotional robot, it's the players and their ability to grow up and take adversity head on. It's impossible to know what's going on in the locker room, but what this team really needs is vocal leaders. Some upperclassmen that know how to inspire or that have something to prove or futures to think about (Dahl/Marks/Williams/Allison). They have a whole season in front of them to change things around and prove themselves. Based on what I've seen from the coaches, it's going to be up to the players to make it happen.

From what I have read it appears that, at least on the defensive side, that the coaches are very vocal. Why this is not rubbing off onto the players is a puzzle. You may well be right, that they need some inspiration from their peers to get that fire-in-the-belly.

Isn't this what CML preaches? They have to find their own drive, they have to find that fire? If it's placed there only by external sources, if the external sources change, won't their fire?

Rutgers fan here.

Not sure where you're getting that we're imploding. Prior to the NSU game, we had two rough weeks that have been exacerbated by the local press, but the team has pulled together and showed very well on Saturday. The one area we have issues is our defensive backfield: we're playing talented but raw youngsters due to losing several DB's from our two deep due to the aforementioned problems. However, as the game progressed this past Saturday, they settled in and did their job. But I'm sure that's an area your coaching staff will look to exploit.

Hopefully you get there a few hours before gametime and circulate through the tailgating lots. A lot of good tailgates going on, and we love to talk football. See ya out there!

Your head coach is on thin ice and you had a half dozen players arrested. You just won the Fulmer Cup. Your program is a dumpster fire, even if you are in denial about it.

Wow,,,good luck as a Wazzu fan talking sheet like that. Nine bowls in ten years and our FB program is a dumpster fire....Leach is doing nada as far as we can see...we've achieved beyond expectations.

the coach isn't on thin ice and the number of players arrested was 5, 2 of which involved burglary and the other 3 were for getting into a fight - separate incidents and completely different times. We aren't even close to a dumpster fire.
We go bowling every year and have one of the highest APRs in the country every year. Isn't that good? This is the first time we've had a criminal issue like this and we will get through it, simple as that.
Enjoy the game saturday to those who are coming out East.

Yes our program is a dumpster fire, at least we can admit that. You are in denial. Also you live in Newark. Why would anyone with any options in life choose to live in Newark?

Wow, you couldn't be more wrong. Is this how you respond to all visitors on your site?

Kyle Flood is not on thin ice. The investigation into the "inappropriate" email which the local press has blasted to the world at most violates a university regulation that has pretty much been ignored by most of the coaches at the school. Explicitly, the regulation discourages coaches contacting professors directly. In this case, the professor is the one who initiated contact, and the professor who apparently sat on a grade for a player who was all but expected to be ineligible. And then complained to the athletic staff that the player was "badgering" him for the grade.

Second, yes, we had 5 players who were arrested - 1 for being involved in a home invasion ring and 4 for being involved in a fight last April. All 5 have been dismissed from the team. When the coaching staff was made aware of these incidents, they reacted immediately and both informed the administration and cooperated with authorities. Not sure what more they could have done, as it is impossible to baby sit these young adults 24/7.

Yeah, the national media has an agenda against Kyle Flood and Rutgers. LOL.

Dont worry RU fans, we just experienced a low we didn't think we could hit so some of us are touchy. Really don't know what to think about this game. Paper says we can burn them if we play well, heart says we will fold up like the lot of beach chairs we are. If I was RU I would pound the ball all day against our slug slow linebacking core and call it a day.

Make no mistake, Rutgers will win on Saturday going away. We have a team and coaching staff full of chumps that don't care about winning and losing. We'll get to hear a list of excuses on Sunday that include weather, air travel, game time, or whatever else they can come up with. We expect that at this point.

But that doesn't change the fact that Rutgers football program is currently in a state of disarray.

Leach is something like 12-26, Flood is 24-16. Don't think any WSU fan should be calling RU a dumpster fire.

Yes, it's an embarrassment to all of us that 5 RU players got into trouble and rightfully shown the door. 1 should go away for a long time. The other 4 got in a fight. Let's see how that plays out although they should never have put themselves in such a situation in the first place. The difference is we take it very seriously that RU kids embarrassed the school and program. We, as a fan base, will never accept it as "paying dues" for big time football unlike many fan bases out there.

BTW, aren't you guys near the top in all time Fulmer Cup standings? Glass houses gang.

we are, but in Pullman you get arrested for trying to go into a bar without a license, or tracked and arrested multiple times for driving without an valid ID. So while we technically are up there, and crimes are crimes, it's not necessarily hard crime.

I realize it's game week, and everyone is getting amped up, but the only reason we're calling Rutgers a dumpster fire is because that's the way the National media is portraying the situation.

Rutgers isn't a headliner out West, and what coverage we do get is the National PC slant suggesting that Flood is bullying professors, local media is calling for his resignation, and the roster is full of career criminals. Obviously, there are 2 sides to the story, and the Rutgers alumni deserve to be heard.

Personally, I don't think these issues will affect Rutgers this week against us, but once you hit conference play and lose a few games, I can certainly see things unraveling if the media continue to beat the story into the ground and pepper the players with the same, dramatic interview rhetoric over, and over, and over.

By the way, looking through this thread, I don't see anyone calling out Rutgers. The first half of the string stuck to the original post about Leach's press conference. Midway through, ONE poster said that he thought BOTH programs appear to be imploding.

Based on that ONE message, several of you posted critical comments about that one message, and flood gates opened.

How does this string lead you to the conclusion that WSU is sheet talking? I haven't seen one (literally) post where someone is confident about our chances on Saturday.

They aren't smart enough to leave New Jersey, what makes you think they are smart enough to comprehend my posts?

Flood is not on thin ice. He went 8-5 last year with a blowout win over a P5 team in our bowl game and has been to a bowl each of the 3 years he has been head coach. His recruiting has also picked up.

The minor academic infractions may warrant a 1 game suspension at most from Flood. The arrests have no bearing on him other than making an already shaky secondary much worse. Rutgers is not imploding as you put it. Far from it in fact. From a FB perspective the only weakness is depth in the secondary. We should be a pretty solid P5 team otherwise.

Every year there are multiple smear campaigns created by local journalists to create clicks and hits on their sites to help stave of bankruptcy. I'm sure next year there'll be something else. It's just the way it is and the price we pay for being in the #1 media market in the country. We are under a microscope constantly where any minor infraction or rumor is blown out of proportion regularly. We as a fanbase have slowly gotten used to it but it does tend to generate a false "sky is falling" image to those not attuned with the area.

Yes, I should probably clarify. "What he said....". Not trying to talk smack, and if you Rutgers guyz saw my posts on YOUR site you'd realize I am beyond excited to visit the east coast and meet a bunch of Rutgers fans! It should be a blast!

Please, my concerns are about the universe imploding, not talking smack against Rutgers!

I expect these type of inaccuracies from the opposing team.

1 was charged with robbery. 4 were charged with assault. They are all off the team, so it doesn't really matter.

I'm looking forward to playing you guys so we can test out our new young secondary and get them ready for the B1G schedule.

Despite news reports Flood is not on the hot seat. If he was they would've used these non-scandals to fire him. They did not as he is doing well developing talent and recruiting quality under the radar recruits.

I was very excited about this season until the arrests. The B1G is for the taking after Ohio State and Michigan State. Prior to the dismissals I liked our chances against any B1G team after those 2. We'll see if these kids can play against the air raid.

who said I live in Newark......NN is an old Italian american sixties persona/character known just to those from the area...I was born their and grew up in Belleville/Nutley of Sopranos fame and per capita income in Greater Newark is highest in the nation usually or close .......whats your excuse..

whats your excuse..do most people in Pullman have all there teeth.

First of all, it's "their" teeth....

Secondly, why are you bashing the entire city of Pullman and fans on this website because of what a couple of individual posters have stirred up?
