Man among boys

Well, actually, it does happen. Not often, perhaps once or twice per decade, but it happens. In addition to James Darling, I'd have to add Matt Mullennix (Liberty-Spangle), Will Derting (Okanogan), Doug Wellsandt (Ritzville), Josh Parrish (Chewelah) and even that Fuskie Dave Browning (Liberty-Spangle again). I'm missing someone...I'm old and my memory is not that good...but there are more in what I'd consider the "modern" era (arbitrarily, post 1970).
Vince Leighton. Pretty decent basketball player from Liberty/Fairfield.

Kevin Graffis (Oakesdale) might have played football one year - after playing basketball at WSU.

That's what, 45 years ago?

Was Vince Leighton a transfer from Wenatchee Valley College?

I didn’t see his name in the NWC basketball box score last night.

You're not going to see him at the Rec Center ripping it up. Shaq like FT%, kid isn't afraid of committing a few personal fouls. Doesn't appear to be on the current roster. Then again don't know how accurate this site is. He could be launching kids around the court as I type.

Ouch. Not good. Not good at all.

The night Sark rolled into town to recruit Bishop Sankey, he made it widely known that he 'only had one schollie' left to give and that he was going to go look at this Dahl kid at U-High.

Sark rolled into the gym and immediately Joe got uber-aggressive. Like football crazy aggressive. He picked up 3 quick fouls and spent the rest of the half on the bench. Thanks, Sark.

Didn't matter. U-High had a really good team that year and didn't need Joe's help. But it was pretty comical to see him go from being a solid basketball player to WWE wrestler in the space of about 3 minutes.

The athletes in Spokane these days are playing basketball - they aren't playing football at a B school. Anton Watson, Tanner and Jacob Groves , Liam Lloyd, Tanner Christianson just off the top of my head playing bball at the D1 level. All of them would have been excellent football players in high school except for Jacob since he weighed about 130 lbs. soaking wet.

10-12 years ago they were all playing football and basketball - Halliday, Mastin, Long, Dahl, Rodgers, Shaw, Karstetter, Dunn, Mattinglys. It was simple to see athleticism. Brett Rypien played both football and basketball until his junior year (played hockey instead for fun when he dropped basketball). That was about when kids started choosing one or the other sport.

If this kid isn't playing basketball at NWC at 6'5", he's not an athlete. He's a project at best.
Or maybe no desire to play basketball. I have friends 6'7" and 6'8" and neither one played basketball, but they love golf

With a kid like this, I’m not even that interested in his game film. I’m not going to use it to judge his performance. There aren’t more than a handful of guys his size in all of 2B, and they’re rarely going to see each other. He’s typically going to be lined up against someone who he’s got 6” and 80 lbs on. I’ll watch his tape to see level of effort and how well he sustains it - that’s about it.

To judge performance, I want to see him in a camp. Show me how he does against someone without his size advantages. He can just brute force his way through the whole season at NWC. Doesn’t have to have technique, footwork, or even much brains. Take away the size advantage and you’ll see if he knows anything about leverage and momentum, and if he can do more than 1 thing.

There’s also a new strategy available now. Let him go to Central or Eastern. Let him get some seasoning and some coaching there, and see if he gets better. If he does, get him in the portal as a sophomore and pick him up then. Doesn’t cost a roster spot if he doesn’t pan out, and doesn’t take our staff’s project time.

Good point. Looks like he has an offer from Eastern. They may be laying the groundwork for exactly what you are describing. Sucks for the ewu and cwu s of the world but that’s the world we live in.

Ah, more memory lane.

Yes, I remember Vince. Thanks for that.

Graffis was on the Oakesdale team that kept my Freeman team from the state B championship game in the first year that the Kingdom hosted it (fall '73). They beat us the first game of the season (non-league; at Oakesdale; and given the traditional Whitman County league ref homerism we were not sure they earned it) and in the playoff semi's (they earned that game and deserved to go to the Dome). Both close but no cigar. If he had wanted to work harder he might have found a place on the football team; 6'3" and a good build, which was not small in the mid-70's. He did not have the right combination of height, build & skill set for the hoops folks. The term "Graffis" was a rather dire insult at Freeman for the rest of that year, FWIW. And to put that Oakesdale/Freeman pair of games in context, we won the state A track title the following spring, with the split end, halfback, QB and one O guard running the 440 relay. That guard (the halfback's fraternal twin) also played DE on the other side of the ball, and he was probably the deadliest kid on our team.

Kingdome did not open until 1976. First Kingbowl in Kingdome not until 1977 when close to all divisions played there.

First year of WIAA state playoffs in 1973 they were dispersed - 3A (now 4A) was at Seattle Memorial Stadium (which a school levy election is intended to replace stands from 1940s)

WIAA site says game for Oaksdale possibly at Cheney?

Pretty sure that Freeman team was led in scoring by Bob Lashaw. Maybe ‘74/‘75ish? The guy could shoot. Later became a really really good referee.

My property taxes go to the Freeman School District.

That was the year after the big football success. Bob was the scorer in the '75 team that took Brewster to the end but ended up 2nd in the B tourney. Craig Faire (later the E-burg HS girls hoops coach for 20-ish years) was the playmaker. Lots of other role players. Solid team. If Bob had 2" more he could have played in college. At 6'4" he was a little too short to be a 3 at the college level, and that was his natural spot. That was Al Rettmann's last year as coach; he went to Mead after that. Good times. What part of the district are you in?

The Spokane end of the district -Baltimore/Willow Springs area.

Crap - my neighbor just sent me a text/video of a cougar caught on camera on his property 30 minutes ago. Need to corral the dog.

Take care of your critters, Observer. Those cats are hungry this time of year. Fwiw, I have a buddy who works at Mutual Materials in Mica. The other morning after a snowfall they found tracks outside their office from a big tom. Guy is a life long hunter and estimated by the size of the tracks it probably weighs 150+. On the big size for a male. It's a ways from you but those boys have quite the range! See safe!

I think a lot of people would be very disturbed if they knew how frequent the big cats are close by, even on the edges of the metro areas. We live in a canyon about 30 miles east of moscow. Will see cougars within 1/2 mile of the house 1/2 dozen times a year and get feedback every other week or so of people seeing them cross the road in front of them. In 18 yrs Have yet to have one tangle with one of our dogs or horses. (Knock on wood.) I think the increase in security cameras going up all over really increase people's awareness of their presence now. The ones that develop a taste for cats and dogs have to be a pretty big challenge to take care of.

A good sized tom took someone's yipper recently near Seven Bays on Lake Roosevelt. Owner went out to let the dog do business, cat came out from under their deck. Fido gone...so is the cat now.

Cougars are usually pretty skittish and our three dogs are barkers so the big cat isn't going to get surprised and attack. One of the damned dogs has the ability to jump the four foot fence like a show horse and that's the one that will get eaten. There's several cougars running the ridge between Dishman Hills, Browns Mountain and Tower Mountain - all occupied by homes.

It's the f'ing coyotes that I can't stand. They run in packs and every night as the sun goes down, they start their howling. They don't come up near our property because they are bottom feeders - fighting three dogs is too much work when they can just take down a deer or cat.

Coyotes hate the strobe light I have on the maglite. Chases them off every time and shuts their asses down. We have a resident bobcat that I can get within 30 feet of before he moves away. That dude isn't scared of any one or two coyotes at a time. Cougars just pass through every now and then.

Send some of your cougars and coyotes this way. Keep the raccoons away and deer from shitting in my yard every night.

There's only orchards and fields on the property. The deer use it as a safe sanctuary to eat, sleep and protect their family when they get leg injuries. The good thing about deer crap is that is disappears within a couple of days. Never seen, but heard raccoons at night time. Bob and his mate take good care of raccoons.

Grew up in Glenrose off of tower mountain - parents lived there for 50 years. Coyote yips at night were music to my ears.

I'm more concerned with moose than I am cougar or coyotes. We had a mama and baby moose stroll just outside our fenced area last week. The stupid dog that could jump the fence, did, and then starting barking and getting near the mama. One kick from the moose would have crushed its skull.

Moose are damned mean. Have had a couple encounters with them on our property and the best thing to do is just back away slowly.

Animals in the wild on the west side have moved on past their attacking pets stage and are now onto their bicycle theft, copper wire and catalytic converter theft stage.

Animal control officers locally see that their ballots are harvested every November.

You think moose are mean? Clearly you haven’t encountered any of the local squirrels or chipmunks.

Moose are ridiculously mean and attack frequently - mostly protecting their young. Don't F with moose - especially females as their babies are usually near.

Oh I hear ya’ - just teasing. 30 - 50 years ago they weren’t a thing in the area - least not that I ever heard of. Cougar (many many years ago one took a neighbors German shepherd pup off their front porch), coyotes, bobcat, elk( probably not many left due to poaching) and the rare bear sighting (by neighbors). Started seeing moose on my parents property about 10 - 15 years or so ago. I have a healthy respect and stay the eff away. Never been bothered by them but I have been stalked by an aggressive bull elk during mating season.

Cougars are no joke with toddlers around. A distant cousin's kid was attacked in his yard right along the highway south of Orient about 20 years ago. A mad & desperate mom with a broom ran him off, but there were hundreds of stitches. I've had Cougars with young ones walk up to me at a golf course tee box twice. We all backed away very quietly. As for the moose comments, they are not rational. Just stay out of the way....these are not domesticated animals.

I was living in West Seattle when dude wrestled a cougar back in 1996. Pretty crazy story.

Five deer have tagged my car in the last five years. Bolting out in front of me

I have a punch card at the DAA Body Shop
My dad had the Body & Fender shop in Rockford. We had two busy seasons; the first snow/sleet roads and when the whitetails went into rut. Those were usually about a month apart. Deer were a problem year around, but during rut they didn't pay a lot of attention to the road they were crossing. Fall was a busy time for us!
