OK - Tariffs

Sounds like your buddy wants to blame Trump for his planning failure(s).

When you “ride the market” sometimes, you get burned
This isn’t the stock market he’s talking about you knucklehead. How was he supposed to plan for arbitrary tariffs with no advanced notice? This is why it’s disrupting US businesses and markets: the actions are arbitrary and unpredictable.

You are a Billionaires-worshipping elitist expressing contempt for the average American. Disgusting.

Does this argument hold up in court?

Pretty cultish thing for a lawyer to say.
Yes. Remember that you've already admitted none it makes sense because Putin's aggression didn't happen while Trump was in office, Trump sent weapons to Ukraine, etc.

Let's be honest -Australia hasn't sent anything of use to the United States since Elle MacPherson.

Maybe a couple punters.
Let's be honest - Australia repeatedly sent troops to places at our request this century when almost no one else would do so.

Not sure if they could kick an American football.

Trade wars with your allies are stupid. Not much else to be said.

tesla down almost 30% in the last month. Did musk plan for that???

At least he got to turn the White House into a car lot. Think it’ll help sales?

I expect the president to try to improve or protect our position. Do you believe enacting near across-the-board tariffs on our two closest trading partners WITHOUT formally proposing amendments in the agreed upon manner is likely to help our situation and if so, how?
It's unwise to make assumptions based on what you DON'T hear from the talking heads in 3-4 minute discussion on your media outlet of choice.

In recent remarks about his trade policy agenda, President-elect Donald Trump stated that “upon taking office, I will formally notify Mexico and Canada of my intention to invoke the six-year renegotiation provision of the USMCA that I put in.”

Well there was that contract for the government to purchase 400 million in armored cyber trucks. No conflict of interest/ corruption going on there.

I assume that you're of the opinion our allies should keep their word? Just for example, hitting agreed upon defense spending benchmarks. Canada is now talking about hitting the 2.0 percent by 2027. Trudeau was saying 2032. So, at least they might try now. Currently at 1.37 percent.

Let's be honest - how many of those troop requests were necessary? Or should we have even been there in the first place?

Again, how is a reciprocal tariff a trade war? You charge me 25% for wheat/timber/apples to come into your country, I charge your 25% the other direction on the same stuff. Let the consumer decide on an even playing field which wheat/timber/apple they like better.

And he is the average American 😂. I suppose if you have no business consequences then you can sit in your mom’s basement and laugh at the people who do, which I suspect is where Uber is watching this circus from. #winning!

Yeah…now you’re just lying to prove your point. Lawyer away!

Jesus! Some of you remind me of the guy in the stands that says we have no chance to win a game after only 15 seconds in because the opposition ran the opening kickoff back for a TD. How about letting things play out a bit? I have heard some smart business folks talking about waiting to see how all this plays out, not just the temporary tariffs but the full tax cuts that are planned, the new investments in tech and manufacturing, cost savings from DOGE, etc.

Tunnel vision is almost always the wrong way to evaluate things. Have some patience, evaluate everything a ways down the road. The US DOES have a fair amount of power, ya know what I mean, Vern?
Geezus is right. None of what you post above bears any relation to what is going on. Every day I check the news. Guess what? Another morning, another tariff threat. How are your smart business friends supposed to operate and plan when they don't know from one day to the next what to expect? Some leader dares to question Trump? Boom - tariffs!

Trump says everyone is "ripping the US off". Do they force us to buy foreign cars or 75" Chinese TV's or cheap plastic crap? No. Every day I watch the various delivery services drop off armloads of Amazon boxes. Betcha $5 that half of it came from China.

You can't have sanity when you have this on again, off again tariff threat. A measured approach targeting certain countries or products for whatever reason, fine. Waving your tariff wand willy nilly is no way to govern.

And don't get me started on DOGE. I see a new ruling today reinstating thousands of DOGE-fired probationary workers. As predicted by the far-seeing Loyal One. You know, those fresh-faced mostly younger Americans who signed on for public service but in reality were fraud and waste-infected, sinister creatures? And the "wall or receipts" continues to become the wall of lies as one false and inflated claim of savings is proven to be BS.

I'll have to find the article quoting Trump as feeling for the soon-to be laid off Dept of Ed employees. Something like "many/most of them aren't even working". Oh really, based upon what? Do you have photographs of them out golfing 18 days in the last month and a half instead of working? Oh wait, that would be Trump. Don't forget the $18M that has been spent SO FAR on his trips to Florida and other venues.

I won't get started on the condition of my retirement accounts this week. I think I'm down about $20K. Thankfully I don't have any Tesla stock.

If it makes you feel better, I'm down almost $100k in the past month. Good times. But Trump spent $90k on an electric car that he says is wasteful because he wants his idiot followers to abandon their hate of electric cars to help Elon's bottom line.....so at least someone is watching out for Musk.

Buying opportunity.

You are a history major ... when was last time US "won" a trade war

So to avoid a trade war, USA should let Canada, other countries bend USA over, and RAPE USA with Tarifs, and USA should just take it, not do anything about it.

Whether A country puts tarifs on USA, and USA does nothing, just accepts the tarifs put on USA, etc, or whether USA slaps back, starts a trade war by slapping a tarif back on a country, either way, the net result is a Tarif on the USA no matter what USA does, except if USA slaps a tarif back at a country, USA can say " Dont like that Tarif? That tarif hurting your nation? Well your tarif was hurting our nation. Tell you what, how about we both agree to drop tarifs on both our nations? If you drop your tarif on us, we will drop all tarifs on you."

That would work, stop countries putting tarifs on us, or at least might probably work better then doing nothing and continuing to take it in the rear, or asking or saying "Please don't rape us with a tarif", or "Dont rape us with a tarif"

Then after slapping back, and after all tarifs dropped, sign trade agreement that forbids tarifs.

Slapping back is the only language trade bullies understand.

Hitting them in their pocket book is the only thing they understand.

The trade agreement was renegotiated by Trump in 2020 before he left office.

It still belongs to Bill Clinton, as Trump didn't hardly change Clinton's NAFTA much at all, and since about 89% to 93% of it is exactly the same as Clinton's NAFTA, so NAFTA still belongs to Clinton.

Trump referred to the USMCA as the best agreement the USA had ever made. He owns it. Check the transcript:

"I will say that we just ended a nightmare known as NAFTA. (Applause.) They took our — they took our jobs for a long time. They took it for a long time. And we now have a brand-new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. It’s a whole different ballgame, and it’s going to be great for this plant. It’s going to be incredible for Michigan and for every place else in our country.

The USMCA is the fairest, most balanced, and beneficial trade agreement we have ever signed into law. It’s the best agreement we’ve ever made, and we have others coming. And, by the way, the China deal, two weeks ago, was just signed. And that’s going to bring $250 billion into our country. (Applause.) One after another."

Yup, just lie again the cultists won’t be the wiser. Rinse and repeat.

I mean Trumps policies have had a significant negative impact on his bank account and earning power. He lined it all out for you, provided details. Why are you arguing with him?

I’ve got a buddy who’s in the middle of constructing his home. The lumber is now going to cost him $200K more, almost overnight. Yeah he’s f’n pissed, and will probably never recover that money…thanks to Trump, it’s an additional cost with no benefit.
We were looking at building. No frikkin way now. Builders aren’t going to take the risk and give you a fixed price and an extra $100K hit to me would be a deal breaker. Lots of people with this mind set right now. The ripple effect will be ugly.
