Not if they drop 8. Although $5 sez they line up in a 3-man line but blitz a LB or 2 in to stuff his runs.UW has a much better D than TT and PSU so it will be interesting to see what Mateer can do against them. I think he is going have to stay in the pocket more and be patient. This is going to be a tough early season game.
They’ve been blitzing about 50% of the time. We’re going to learn a lot about Mateer this week. Not if they drop 8. Although $5 sez they line up in a 3-man line but blitz a LB or 2 in to stuff his runs.
zbut do they typically run a 3-4 defense? I dunno. My point being will they fake dropping 8 and bring more than 3 to fool us? And yeah, Mateer has already proven his mettle against a P4 team. Now he has his chance to become a Coug icon. They’ve been blitzing about 50% of the time. We’re going to learn a lot about Mateer this week.
If they are smart they just assign a spy and make the Cougs earn it though the air. And of course they'll hold our WRs on every route and not get called on it.Not if they drop 8. Although $5 sez they line up in a 3-man line but blitz a LB or 2 in to stuff his runs.
That’s what I’d do after last week. Set a safety as a spy and don’t let Mateer get free. Blitz mostly from the edges and try to keep him in the pocket, force him to throw. See if he can beat you with his arm.If they are smart they just assign a spy and make the Cougs earn it though the air. And of course they'll hold our WRs on every route and not get called on it.
Could get ugly if WSU WRs don't do their job and catch the ball.
We do the same thing to them, I think. That’s what I’d do after last week. Set a safety as a spy and don’t let Mateer get free. Blitz mostly from the edges and try to keep him in the pocket, force him to throw. See if he can beat you with his arm.
On the other side, same as always. Run it between the tackles and wear down our middle, especially at LB where we have no depth. PSU and TT both showed that we’re soft in the middle. When we start playing DBs tight for run support, throw it behind them.
Agree, if they use a spy on Mateer, running backs could really have a big game.Using a spy is a double edged sword. Yes, it is probably necessary after what Mateer did last week. But it ties up a safety or LB (usually a LB). That means the LB can't blitz and is only available to help when we run right up the middle, do a screen middle, or do a shallow slant pattern. If they come in with a 3 man front and a spy, we should be able to get 3-4 ypc almost automatically. If they show spy but occasionally use him to blitz, it will be risky. A lot of it depends upon how well the O line and RB pick up the blitz. Assignment responsibility will be crucial. And one thing we did not show last week was a RB holding to block and then swinging out for a dump pass late. I'd bet money that we see that this week.

I haven’t either but their defense appears to have been pretty dominant. Eastern Michigan couldn’t do much of anything. Weber state ran it pretty effectively but their QB couldn’t throw it. I haven’t watched a down of their games but I’d guess this is by far the toughest challenge considering the threat of pass and run. Perhaps that was part of the plan these first two weeks was to show the full array of how we can attack. It’s going to make for a helluva tough defensive game planning week for UW. Quite the contrast to what they’ve had to do in the past.Agree, if they use a spy on Mateer, running backs could really have a big game.
I haven't watched any of the Husky games, but according to the computers, this game should be pretty evenly matched.
He’s been efficient but he’s not a threat to run and throws underneath a lot. Can definitely be death by 1000 papercuts if we aren’t getting pressure. Good thing is he’s an air raid QB and our defenders are used to that system and route concepts. We do the same thing to them, I think.
Stack the box and make the qb earn it. He's not so great is my understanding.
Agreed, but I don't think you can spy Mateer with an LB. He's faster than that. If your edges can keep him in the pocket, maybe an LB spy can close the middle, but that's relying on too many variables and they're going to break down. A safety spy narrows the speed gap, but may leave some downfield openings in the passing game...which kind of goes back to 'make him beat you with his arm.'Using a spy is a double edged sword. I’m expecting they’ll load the box and send pressure from a variety of angles/zone blitzes, etc. force him to recognize the blitz and beat them with his arm against man coverage. If they lose contain on him, there will be some huge scramble plays with DBs having their backs turned. Will be quite the chess match.Agreed, but I don't think you can spy Mateer with an LB. With a lot of QBs, you can blitz from their front side and make them roll weak side to reduce their options. Mateer showed last week he can run to anywhere. He broke big ones on both sides and up the middle. His weakness was when he was forced out of the pocket but couldn't find a lane...in those cases he tended to fire sidearm rockets that almost always ended up on the ground. If he can get control of the adrenaline and put some touch on those passes, he's going to be a lot harder to defend.
YEah, they can't spy him on every down. Disguising blitzes and coverages has to be a big part of the plan.I’m expecting they’ll load the box and send pressure from a variety of angles/zone blitzes, etc. force him to recognize the blitz and beat them with his arm against man coverage. This basically how we’ve been defending as well. I’m sure he’s gotten used to these looks in practice as has our line. Lots of exotic blitzes from our defense on Saturday it looked like.YEah, they can't spy him on every down. Disguising blitzes and coverages has to be a big part of the plan.
I'm not sure what kind of defensive personnel UW has this year (and other than this week, I couldn't care less), so not sure what I'd really look for. I'd definitely have Mateer practicing against some shifting coverages this week though.

Still too expensive. Still not going.Get in’s down to $54 today on Gametime. Charter seats on 50 yd line, row f down to $147.
At some point all those unsold tickets will be released to a wholesaler and prices will plummet to cut losses for the promoter.

Aren't those about Martin Stadium prices? Less the tank-plus of gas and whatever else depending on your location. I should go, it's a shorter trip from YakiVegas to Seattle than to Pullman. Easy day trip. I can pony up $54 or whatever. I just can't deal with the thought of Wetside traffic. Last time I was there I swore I would never return.Still too expensive. Still not going.
We "had" to be nice and do a neutral game because UW needed "help" scheduling due to their conference move. Instead of telling them to pound sand and figure it out, the WSU admin decided to help because....?can someone remind me again why this HAD to be played at Lumen?
I could get free tickets with an all-expenses paid trip (I do not live in the area anymore), and still wouldn't go.Still too expensive. Still not going.
I've explained this before but will explain it again. After the Traitors announced they were leaving, future schedules went out the window. I don't know which side started the conversation, but in the end the mutts didn't want the 50/50 home and home to continue. And why would they? Notice that their non-con schedule for the next 7 year (2024 included) has a bunch of home only games other than WSU and Tennessee. Anyway, the Lumen "neutral field" component made the deal. All of our outrage (mine too) aside, this is a pretty good deal for WSU.can someone remind me again why this HAD to be played at Lumen?

You should be asking why the game needs to be played at all.can someone remind me again why this HAD to be played at Lumen?
The $54 is actually below Martin prices. But it's for 3rd deck seats where you can barely see what's going on. And then there's all the other costs - gas, parking, the dose of narcan you need after walking in downtown seattle, tetanus shot, etc.Aren't those about Martin Stadium prices? You. Are. Brilliant.1. Buy a get in ticket
2. Enter stadium
3. Use the gametime app to find real-time, unsold available seats ( hint: they will be everywhere throughout the stadium.
4. Sit in the unsold seat at your favorite location.
5. Enjoy

Ok, I've asked it on the hate board, but will repeat here. What was your degree in?Thanks but, I credit my WSU education for helping develop critical thinking skills.
To keep it short. Pat. Chun. Y’all can thank him at the stadium on Saturday by telling him he’s number one.We "had" to be nice and do a neutral game because UW needed "help" scheduling due to their conference move. So yeah, same question you have.
Haven't liked the guy since 2018, and that's only intensified the past year, lol.To keep it short. Pat. Chun. Y’all can thank him at the stadium on Saturday by telling him he’s number one.
