IMHO, the judge should just quit putting this sentencing off. Just come out and say "hey, given the current (pending) circumstances, I am imposing no sentence. Then walk away. If Trump, etc. want to pursue the conviction up the court chain, fine. Let them. None of it matters anymore.
You are not understanding the situation. A guilty verdict as determined by the jury is NOT equal to a conviction. A person is not considered to be "convicted" under the law until the sentence is pronounced. Since the judge has not yet pronounced a sentence, he is not officially convicted.
At any time during a trial a judge can dismiss a case for cause. I have heard of cases where a judge determines on his/her own to throw out a jury verdict, not sure what rules apply in a situation like that.
As to whether the judge can overturn a conviction in his own case, I am not sure on that. Again, with a conviction only being after a sentence is determined, does the judge lose the ability to modify his/her sentence or the jury verdict? Don't know.
Some learned attorneys such as Alan Dershowitz, Jonathan Turley, Andy McCarthy and others have stated that there are many reasons for this verdict to be thrown out on appeal due to bias and errors in law by the judge. My opinion is that will likely happen if he does not decide to dismiss the case.
