First victim...and unfortunately, completely necessary.
Mateer is gone. Can't make decisions based on whether or not he's going to stay.Arbuckle deserves it too, if he wasn’t 29 and at the hip with Mateer, he’d be gone. I’d still like to see him go and us go to a more traditional offense.
You absolutely have no idea whether Mateer is gone or not.Mateer is gone. Can't make decisions based on whether or not he's going to stay.
You're right. You absolutely have no idea whether Mateer is gone or not.
I don’t see how Mateer stay with all the big, life changing cash out there. Ie: see Cam Ward for an example. You can’t blame a kid for leaving for life changing resources. CF now officially sucks.
No idea other than the reality that it's the logical choice. You absolutely have no idea whether Mateer is gone or not.
I think it’s a little early to say that. He’s more suited for the NFL than Ward was at this point in his career. At least Mateers not fumbling the ball twice a game.I really like Mateer but he is not an NFL QB. I can't blame the kid for looking to make his life changing money now while he can. I won't root for him once he leaves (if he leaves?) but I won't hate him.
Wasn’t Mateer #1 in td’s in the nation as a 20 year old?I really like Mateer but he is not an NFL QB. I can't blame the kid for looking to make his life changing money now while he can. I won't root for him once he leaves (if he leaves?) but I won't hate him.

I mean, over a 4-5 game stretch he was over 70% with like 18 tds and no picks…something like that. He's a good college QB and he has good stats...but those stats are fools gold. He is playing against bad competition and most of his hype is from his ability to run. He has very average arm strength and missed out on at least a half dozen TD's because his receivers outran his throws. He was consistently ineffective in the second halves of games. A lot of that falls on Arbuckle, but he cost us games by regressing to his weird sidearm throwing style at times.
If he stays at WSU and then goes on to the NFL, I'll root for his success....but I see Tim Tebow when I watch Mateer play. Tebow won a Heisman but didn't do squat in the NFL. I like Mateer and he was fun to watch in the first half of the season but the guy on the field right now is not a great QB.
Tebow is an incredible athlete and a fierce competitor.I mean, over a 4-5 game stretch he was over 70% with like 18 tds and no picks…something like that.
As a broncos fan and watching Tebow spike routine throws into the dirt I can tell you he’s most certainly not Tebow.
I think it’s too early to say he’s not an NFL qb. I also think it’s too early to say he’s a sure fire first rounder. He has a lot of upside but also needs a lot of growth in the pocket. He’s a helluva athlete and he has plenty of arm. And he’s a winner.
We’re a ways off from this but it’s been funny seeing all the Bo Nix detractors eat their words. Checkdown merchant, not a good enough arm, blah blah. It’s not easy throwing for 75% against air let alone with 11 guys out there who’ve been watching tape on you all week.
You and Biggs are the only football fans in the country it seems, who don’t understand how special John Mateer is as a young, developing QB in his FIRST year starting.
He will most certainly be a top NFL draft pick next year when he becomes eligible.
Are you proud saying you believe a 20 year old kid has no future?
I was very impressed with Nix at Oregon, and was hoping with so many other QB's in the draft this year that he would fall to the Seahawks at #16. No such luck. I think he will have a long NFL career.I mean, over a 4-5 game stretch he was over 70% with like 18 tds and no picks…something like that.

Covid saved Nix. The extra years in college helped him grow exponentially. In a normal cycle without the covid extensions, he flames out in the league.I mean, over a 4-5 game stretch he was over 70% with like 18 tds and no picks…something like that.

Don’t disagree. Counterpoint…you can help or hurt your OLine with scheme + play calling. Also, a QB can drastically help or hurt an Oline with how he moves. Apologies for the multiple Denver Broncos references but with the same 5 guys they were a below avg OLine last year with Russell bailing out of clean pocket, and are one of the top OLines this year with a QB that knows how to use his feet in the pocket. Makes a huge difference. The O line sucked against Wyoming, period.
I see Mateer as a Taysom Hill type. Maybe a little short to be a TE but assuming he can catch he could be good. I don't share the disdain for his arm strength, but that sidearm shortstop throw is a bad habit except when rolling out. It would be like volleyball against the DL in the pros. However, IMHO with a little technique improvement I could see him being a real good QB. He benches what 500? Arm "strength" should not be a problem.Covid saved Nix. Mateer is a RB. His mechanics won't translate to the NFL because he doesn't have a big enough arm to get away with it. I'd put him at a 50/50 chance to be successful at his new school. There's always a chance if he ends up somewhere with a ton of talent around him. He needs to follow the Nix model and stay in college as long as they'll let him
People get too infatuated with arm strength. The NFL requires you to be accurate on 15-20 yard throws. Nobody throws 80 yard bombs unless it’s a Hail Mary. Mateer can throw a 15 yard out to the opposite hash and send one 50 yards downfield when he needs to. He’s got plenty of arm strength he needs to continue working on his footwork and going through progressions quickly.I see Mateer as a Taysom Hill type.
