The absurdity of being "right" and being "giddy" over a loss to PSU

There may be one person who was giddy over Saturday's result that has ties to WSU-it is Malik Roberson. The junior varsity coach who was fired at WSU, and roasted by the fan base. He coordinated a defense that held WSU to 17 points. A second person who probably has a smirk on his face is Wulff.

But as for anyone else, even the thought of it is nuts. Jim Walden, Erickson, Price, Doba, Wulff are all gone. But WSU football carries on. They are all part of the past, no matter what we think of the past. But not one of those men are bigger than the school.

The greatest absurdity is that many of "us" live in the UW's back yard. I can't tell you how many calls or texts I received over the last four days from people in Purple. Some wondering if I am near the Aurora bridge, some laughing hysterically. And you know what rings hollow to them? "I was right on Cougzone".

Being right is like the old insurance commercial..."The Cougs just lost to PSU but I just saved money on my auto insurance". Big deal.

Well, we are talking about people who stay up all night Friday and Saturday eating cookie butter and posting on the msg board about things I've said 4 yrs ago after all...so it shouldn't be surprising.

What were you right about? I must have read you post 1,000 times, "I've never said I'm not a fan of Leach", or "I've never said I didn't think Leach was going to get it done". In fact, as far as I can tell, you never take a direct stance on much of anything.

I was speaking in general. Sponge's proclamation after game one of the Leach tenure. People claimed he was "giddy" over the loss. Anything but.

Aaaaaand it's official. The 4 years-to-develop "I told you so". Great. I swear this is why people have been on you for so long. This is why they say, "You've been hoping for this". Just so you could say, exactly what you just did. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Now you have your vindication… Otherwise you never would have said this. Love your support.

Am I missing something? Isn't that exactly what just happened? The great, "I told you so"? Who doesn't like vindication for their statements?

You can SAY that all you want- it rings hollow when you ACT like it's better than winning the lottery, no one will believe you.

How long had you been saving "fugazi" for?

I don't take people who posted on Friday nights about something I said 4 yrs ago very seriously. They are the ones always bringing it up(on a Fri night, no less)..not me.

Not sure how you got a told you so out of the text you bolded above...must not be thinking clearly as you are nearing flip out mode again.

I'm sure we'll see another one of your Tom Cruise flips out impersonation in 3-2-1...

Well, you can say that you don't like Wulff until you are blue in the face, but since you named yourself after him, nobody will believe you.

I have never called Leach a Fugazi. Sponge has. So the fact you "railed on Wulff" and you were right you preferred that to winning? So be it. I would prefer being wrong and winning.

Who likes "vindication" when it comes at the expense of looking down the barrel of another losing season.

Maybe in real life you are right all the time. I on the other hand have been humbled as I am outnumbered 3 to 1 in my household so I am wrong most of the time. The pet dog is more right than I.

95...you missed the mark. Sponge had said something while having a couple of cocktails and frustrated over a loss to BYU. In saying he didn't think Leach would not get it done back in 2012 he has been reminded of that one statement over and over again. Four years after it was made. He doesn't bring up the statement, others do. Trust me, it is much more fun to be wrong and be in San Diego for a bowl game than right, feeling vindicated and sitting home on Dec 30th.

Nope. Didn't need to make a post justifying myself against the slings of the masses, either.

And your point? What justification?

Not surprising. You strike me as a "words over actions" guy.
You mean like supporting and going to games versus typing about how crappy a coach is? Is that what you mean by words over action?

You've done an immense amount of typing this week. What are you trying to imply?

Not "implying" anything. And you have been a little more low key than you normally are. I hope you don't have the flu.

Nah, the flu is more than I want to take on, by which I mean the alternative definition where I don't take it on.

Wulff won 9 games. He fired Roberson . His defensive line was run over the first half and he allowed 100 yards to a terrible WSU team performance.

He allowed 400 yards and 2 tds in absolutely awful weather conditions. He didn't do anything that was special.
As bad as our defense was we had more tackles for loss.
We had more sacks (3) to their zero.

So as bad as our defensive line played...it was better than PSU.

The real difference was in our special teams having a fg blocked, and a punt muffed,
and allowing 200+ rushing yards.

Roberson's team won, but he had very little to do with it.

Of course he didn't. It was pure luck. But problem more important to him is he stifled a Pac 12 offense to 10 points in the first half, 7 in the second.

And he did exactly what they wanted them to do. Make them go 80. Make them chew clock. No big plays. Gain lots of yardage and no points.

In the second half we had the ball or 7 minutes. THEY chewed up the clock.

5.8 yards per play WSU, 4.9 Portland State.

So as magical as you think they were they weren't better in tackles for loss, they weren't better in sacks, they weren't better in yards per play, 7/8 4th downs converted. We had 21 first downs to their 19.

They weren't better in anything. We muffed a punt and let them rush for 200 yards and eat up the clock.

And as far as "no big plays" we had 2 passing plays +25 yards
1 rushing play +20 yards.

Portland State?

1 rush of 20+ yards
0 passes +25 yards.

So even in explosive plays we did better..despite how bad our dline played despite how poor the offense played.

Roberson wasn't the reason they won. Their rushing offense and a muffed punt is why they won. There wasn't anything magical about the defensive performance.

People think our defense was bad, but they were indeed worse in pretty much ever aspect. It's just they held the ball longer and kept pounding away and scampering for first downs.

Did you really just write that?

If we let them hold the ball longer and allowed them to keep pounding away and scampering for first downs, doesn't that mean our defense is bad?

A steady stream of stupidity has spewed from the hole above your chins every month for the past several years. You set yourself up again and again, dolt.

Where was Malik Roberson during 6 and 40? Where was Chris Ball? We do know Ball lined up eight defenders 40 yards off the ball against Montana, when all UM needed was to get in FG position to win. Btw, Ball was a true mastermind last Saturday. Get off your knees and elbows, Ed.

And you've been absolutely giddy the past several days, just as one would expect a husky to be following a Cougar loss.

Doc...repressed these days? Where was Malik? He was fired. What is your point?

I know it is hard to swallow, but PSU won. You are correct, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. But a 30 some point underdog just beat us in our house. Coaches get lucky. Call it luck. But give the man credit. He and his defense did something no one in the profession thought was possible. Keep the points below 20.

In your yearnings for All Things Wulff, you're propping him up as something special because PSU defeated WSU, as if he was never as bad as 6 and 40 strongly suggests. Why would a real Cougar fan be giddy about an opposing coach's success against WSU? Here's the answer: you're a poser. Seriously, you have no business at WSU games.

Ok. Ease up…. Remember our goal. Breathe deeply… and read with a smile on your face and you'll realize no one is flipping out (well maybe you and Tron). I didn't understand the context but it sure seemed like all you were saying was, "Told you so". And honestly, you've done nothing in this thread to say otherwise. Seems like an emotional betting line where you had nothing to lose. Cougs do well, "I'm so glad I was wrong" but if you're right, the obligatory "Told you so" can be spouted with a cheesy grin on your face. Either way, you're emotionally covered. And yes, I can see you enjoying WSU failures.

How quickly you've forgotten the many times you've discounted Falk, the offensive line ("we have more numbers but no one knows if there's talent"), the d-line ("Vaeao looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane"), and the defense generally. And now you're as giddy as a school girl over Malik Roberson, who has twice washed out at WSU (as a player and as a coach). Again, I've never seen a Coug fan quiver so with delight after a Cougar loss. You go girl.

Sounds like you are projecting your own feelings and happiness about our failures onto me.

Not sure where in this thread you see me "enjoying" our failures. You must have the flu or something.

Again, you're not showing me anything that would indicate you aren't enjoying this… Including this reference to a thread a month or so ago… again another attempt at a "Told you so"?

You and spongie cord were at the PSU game?
You should know since you are looking for us.

I knew we would see a slew of Yaki postings after work since you got scolded by your boss and are forbidden from posting during the day.

Too funny.

Ah, yes, the thread where his claim that Tuel took on a linebacker was absolutely slammed into his face with the video evidence. Classic foot in mouth moment (assuming he got it past his chins)!

So you weren't at the game. Folks at My Office had some great stories to tell about you, though. Btw, what is "afywr" work mean? I've had French and Spanish classes, but that's a language truly foreign to me.

No you idiot!

I was mentioning to Ed that the people who think people are happy about WSU losing are the same people that were staying home on Friday and Saturday night starting and posting in threads about something I said 4 yrs ago.
