The absurdity of being "right" and being "giddy" over a loss to PSU

I know it is hard to swallow, but PSU won. You are correct, we shouldn't even be having this conversation. But a 30 some point underdog just beat us in our house. Coaches get lucky. Call it luck. But give the man credit. He and his defense did something no one in the profession thought was possible. Keep the points below 20.

You're aware that PSU's offense really gets the credit, right? They didn't punt in the second half. Sure Roberson deserves some credit, but if you're really looking to congratulate someone, it's PSU's OC.

There may be one person who was giddy over Saturday's result that has ties to WSU-it is Malik Roberson. The junior varsity coach who was fired at WSU, and roasted by the fan base. He coordinated a defense that held WSU to 17 points. A second person who probably has a smirk on his face is Wulff.

But as for anyone else, even the thought of it is nuts. Jim Walden, Erickson, Price, Doba, Wulff are all gone. But WSU football carries on. They are all part of the past, no matter what we think of the past. But not one of those men are bigger than the school.

The greatest absurdity is that many of "us" live in the UW's back yard. I can't tell you how many calls or texts I received over the last four days from people in Purple. Some wondering if I am near the Aurora bridge, some laughing hysterically. And you know what rings hollow to them? "I was right on Cougzone".

Being right is like the old insurance commercial..."The Cougs just lost to PSU but I just saved money on my auto insurance". Big deal.

The smirk is likely because the unemployment check arrived....

So you weren't at the game. Folks at My Office had some great stories to tell about you, btw.
Oh really? Do tell..since nobody there knows me.

I knew you'd be down there stalking, though. It's your M.O.

You'll be very easy to spot.

You wouldn't be paranoid if everyone wasn't out to get you, right? Relax, spongie. I didn't go there. I don't go to dive bars.

In your yearnings for All Things Wulff, you're propping him up as something special because PSU defeated WSU, as if he was never as bad as 6 and 40 strongly suggests. Why would a real Cougar fan be giddy about an opposing coach's success against WSU? Here's the answer: you're a poser. Seriously, you have no business at WSU games.[/QUOTE
A misread as usual. for someone with your background and education you sure seem to misdiagnose a lot. Not "giddy" at all. If you reread the thread and follow closely I said there is one person who was giddy, the DC coordinator who will get credit from his team, his coaches and their fans for devising a game plan that held a D1 team to 17 points at home. Nothing happy about it in my book. It means we have to beat Rutgers on the road, Wyoming at home, and find four Pac 12 wins. Osu, at Cal, Stanford, CU, at UW, Oregon, ASU, at UCLA, at Arizona. which games do you think are our 4 wins? UW on the road, at Cal, CU, OSU?

Forget this issue. I just want you to finally man up and admit you were wrong about Bone.:D

Well since the story is about the one person who had ties to WSU that would be giddy, and the person with ties was Roberson, I didn't think to mention the OC. And anytime the offense and defense from a lower level beats a home team they all deserve credit.

How quickly you've forgotten the many times you've discounted Falk, the offensive line ("we have more numbers but no one knows if there's talent"), the d-line ("Vaeao looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane"), and the defense generally. And now you're as giddy as a school girl over Malik Roberson, who has twice washed out at WSU (as a player and as a coach). Again, I've never seen a Coug fan quiver so with delight after a Cougar loss. You go girl.
I discounted Falk. Please point out the comments. I believe I said we don't know if he is the player we saw against OSU, and half the game at ASU, or the player we saw at ASU and UW. Also, I said Falk because he is a sophomore will costs us a game because of mistakes. The same goes for Rosie in 87, Bledsoe in 91, Leaf in 96, Gesser in 2000. If he doesn't it would be a first on the Palouse. I said I don't see how we beat Cal in a shootout, Oregon in a shut out because Connor is gone and he was perfect or nearly perfect in those games. Not a knock on Falk at all. I also said at the time, probably May, that Falk was behind Goff, Kessler, Anu S, Bercovichi, and CU's QB. I would also put him behind Adams. Not sure why anyone would have a hard time with that evaluation.

Offensive line. We don't know if there is talent behind the starters. NONE have played. They have zero experience. Yes, Destiny has done what to change my opinion?

Roberson was fired from WU. He was a horrible recruiter in the fertile grounds of LA. I think Leach made a huge mistake not keeping Walk on the staff.

And with that said, robersons team just won, and how could he not be an ex coug that is giddy about what happened. Also, I am honest, his team won and I don't believe he or the OC just rolled out the ball and said lets see what happens.

Where was Malik Roberson during 6 and 40? Where was Chris Ball? We do know Ball lined up eight defenders 40 yards off the ball against Montana, when all UM needed was to get in FG position to win. Btw, Ball was a true mastermind last Saturday. Get off your knees and elbows, Ed.
Malik roberson sucked at WSU and got fired. Is there a point?

Did you really just write that?

If we let them hold the ball longer and allowed them to keep pounding away and scampering for first downs, doesn't that mean our defense is bad?

Yes it does...and there's was worse...which is what Roberson coached...so take that as you like. Kind of the whole point I was making was Roberson wasn't special or did anything incredible. He was pretty mediocre to poor....

But in the second half we were poor they ran out a lot of clock, and then we had the muffed punt and continued to be poor at stopping them and they ground it out.

Not some great defensive performance by them. Our own players probably had more passes defended against ourselves (drops) then they caused.

Take Roberson out of it for just a moment. Giving up 17 to a Pac 12 team isn't an accomplishment? How many did we score last year?

Okay so let's take a look of this in comparison to last year.

- Last year ran the ball 23 times for 76 yards / this year 30 times for 104
- We threw the ball 64 times last year / this year 45 times

So last year we ran 87 plays / this year 75 plays

Last year they passed the ball 51 times / This year...12 times
And ran the ball 33 times for 93 yards / This year 48 times for 233 yards

So last year they ran 84 play / This year 60 plays

Now this is important. This year we ran 7 more times and they rushed 15 more times

For a grand total of 22 more running plays. Which ate up a ton of clock.

Last year 171 plays were run. This year 135 plays.

So 40 fewer plays were run. Think about that.

So what does this all mean?

The clock was run more by us, but a tremendous amount more by them. 15 more plays more.

So by them running the ball and not having to throw and us running the ball it shortened the game significantly...thus holding us to a few points...because running the ball eats up more time.

So what played the big factor... for the low score

Them running the ball and us not stopping them (shortening the game)
Us running the ball in the first half and them not stopping us (shortening the game)

+Muffed punt that gave them a short field

So by running instead of passing they shortened the game dramatically giving them a chance to capitalize on our mistake in a poor environment game on special teams.

Was it their defense? Not at all. It was the offensive strategy combined with us not stopping them in addition to a critical mistake that got them the game. It was a very smart way for them to play given the conditions.

They both beat Portland State, right?

Torn, last year, we WON. this year we LOST. Yes, that is all that matters, in the end... especially so in year four behind "the BEST Coach in America.".

We have entered a spin very much zone.

It's not spin. It's how they won. If you pay attention it's interesting to understand how it was done and how the game shifted completely from the type of game that we would normally play / to the type of game we played this year.
