We need to confront reality: we have terrible leadership at WSU

I’m not putting him on a pedestal, it’s just that there’s a lot more nuance than you are aware of and/ or willing to consider.

USC in Pullman was a historic event. (Even though the game didn’t sell out)

One elusive AC win for a Rose Bowl birth was simply beyond the realm of reality for most. He got there.

Uncle Denny donors working to ride him out of town behind the scenes as his career was developing worked counter to Walden as well.

Not a hill I’m willing to die on but, the fact Walden laid the foundation for Erickson and Price to build on is undeniable.
Nuance? There is no nuance in Ed, Loyal and Krusty's narrative. Just nostalgia. We can let Walden's own words directly to CougEd tell the story of the challenges that Walden says he faced:

CougEd: Coach, how does the rebuilding job that Wulff faces compare to what you went through in the late 70's
Jim Walden: Harder. Even though I was the 4th head coach in 4 years the talent that i found was better than what Paul has found. So it might, it was, easier for me to build it back up … You could also say there's no Jack Thompson out there. I inherited Jack Thompson and that alone was pretty good as far as rebuilding

Doesn't seem that Walden thought he was walking uphill both ways in a blinding snowstorm. More fanboyism from CougEd can be found in the transcript too.

Thanks for insulting and analyzing me at the same time, Dr. Phil. Quite clever! On Xmas morning no less.

Fact is, you don't know jack shit about Walden or the landscape at WSU other than what you have read. 44-52-4 was a good if not great record given what he was up against. It was his first HC job as well. So give it a f-ing rest. Talk about seeking attention. 14 hours on WW was it Monday? I'll go back and count your posts after I lint-pick my toes. Might paint them too. Crimson.

And my relationships with people and alcohol have always been just fine so worry not but thanks for checking. Your seeming fascination with running down some random guy at every turn is troublesome, Dr. Phil. Perhaps you need to ramp up YOUR counseling schedule?

My only life's regret so far is that I have a bunch of great stories that I can't tell my kids, and even more that I can't tell my grandkids. I may write a book. :) :)
If you can take it, don't dish it out.

Hey Gibby, thanks for finding that 18-year-old article. How long are you going to try to string this Walden hate-fest out? Personally, I'm kind of more interested in the game tomorrow. But carry on with your nonsense. Ed will be happy to spar with you until eternity.

And I think you typo'd your bolded comment. Can take it? or can't take it? I would think that a bard like you could string together a 9-word sentence of one syllable words without any spelling errors. Hahahahah! :)

And we get the familiar LoyalCoug response when he's been exposed- "lets move on."

Fixed your post. :)

That aside, I've been exposed? As what, pray tell?

You can put any decade into that last sentence, including the 2020s, and that statement would be true.
Having lived through all of the referenced decades as a fan, I don't think what Walden went through was remotely comparable. We had nothing back in the 80's. The weight room sucked, the training table was that of a typical dining hall, coach's offices were a small step above a dorm room guest lounge. Recruiting was impossibly difficult. Terrible flight options out of Pullman. Coaches were writing recruiting letters every day to prospects. Getting kids to visit Pullman was extremely challenging. I still remember laughing in the stands with my buddy about how our team lined up our equipment duffel bags around Martin Stadium while visiting programs rolled in fancy equipment lockers and traveled 35 more players than we had on our home roster.

Walden handed Erickson a much more refined job than what he inherited. Price then further elevated the job.

Yay! We have a new victim for Gibby to stalk! Thanks Patrol. Have fun.

Loyal is confirming that he's one of the creepy old dudes that showers at the gym, hangs out for awhile in the locker room with one foot on the bench letting the wrinkled and shriveled parts dangle in the open to see if he finds any takers.

Wow. Speaking of creepy. Pretty sure I won't be patronizing your chosen place to work out. Sounds like you must enjoy it.

Other than a series of posts fantasizing about a naughty escapade including himself, his hot college-aged girlfriend and WSU's own John Mateer, Loyal seems more like your average every day "beer drinker and hell raiser" as the ZZ Top song goes.

The life of the party type you see at a dive bar joyfully staggering to the can with a lampshade teetering on his head.

Who doesn't get a chuckle out of a guy like that? 🍻

Pete, Pete, Pete. I don't fantasize, I reminisce.... :). Except for the Mateer part. And Zevi just ain't as cute.....

Now that said, I should be highly offended at your snide remarks. However, aside from the staggering with a lampshade part, I kind of resemble them.

Walden was the right guy at the right time in the right place when he started. By the end of his tenure in Pullman, it was time for change.

Should have gone 4 years in a row vs. the UW but Kevin Gogan biting Rico Tipton and the subsequent 15 yard penalty killed that upset in 84.

Haven't run into him at One Shot Charlies to buy him a beer but hope to at some point. Can't afford to drink with Uncle Denny at Shooters.
He was perfect for the time and he was it perfect timing when he left. He did what he had to do....and that was to keep us in the Pac 10 and keep us relevant. And he set the table in terms of recruiting the players WSU would get, how to get them, and how to switch positions and or develop them.

I stand by what I said. Any decade and WSU is David and almost everyone else (sans Oregon State) is Goliath.

Living legend, program savior coaches dont slink out of town before they get fired. And for what it’s worth, you all are the guys putting him on a pedestal and demanding all revere him.

By the way, all of you fine historians of WSU football will recall that the 95 scholarship limit went into effect in 1978. But, as with all good stories, don’t let facts get in the way.
Yes, did you come up with this while ready The Great Gatsby in third grade while at the same time grading master thesis? Always love it when someone who wasn't there and four people who were there tell him how screwed up and the response is "reduce scholies by 10?" Reminds when a guy argued with me in 2013 that the financial crisis was a result of the community reinvestment act of 1975, and that it is about minorities getting into homes versus the real reason it took place.

Could you imagine Leach taking over a program who at least one if not two major powers wanted WSU out of the conference for financial reasons, having no FOB, no practice field, no indoor facility, no facility upgrades, losing coaches to places like Wyoming cause they paid more, playing home games in Seattle and Spokane, and playing at least one body bag game if not two a year?

Maybe when you were in first grade you can tell me how many bowl games in which WSU played in your or your parents life time. My guess is zero before 81. How many years had gone by that WSU played for a rose Bowl...50? But you are correct, look at the record and that somehow tells you the impact he had outside of wins and losses, which BTW the accomplishments away from the field was more important then and which it is more important now.

And he did not "slink" out of town. He left town because he knew he took US and Spokane as far as he could take it. It is like saying Dickert "slinked" out of town. Dickert knew he was no longer the right person for the job.

Not to defend Loyal...but who doesn't shower at the gym...and why are you looking at wrinkled junk...sounds more like are the one with more issues....

Dickert wasn't going to get fired. Walden was pissing away his best recruit's career running the option and had burned through his goodwill the with the administration. He bailed before he was fired. You weren't at Normandy, or the Sudetenland or alive during WWII, but that doesn't stop you from posting about it. As usual your thoughts are as organized as a fart in a hurricane, and your English is worse.

Your fanboyism has already been posted above. Licking Walden's boots doesn't make him a better coach. You being on campus during Walden's time at WSU does not make Walden a better coach. Walden himself said that the nonsense you're spewing above wasn't the challenge you say. So, not even Walden believes your BS.

Well if I had the privilege to talk to someone who was at Normandy, who was in the fight I certainly would listen an believe them more than some pompous book reader who thinks they know what happened.

And Walden left because he knew it was time. He was not going to be fired after the86 season. If he was it would have already happened. They knew who the next coach would be. But he wasn't on the hot seat because of his won loss record...he was on the warm seat because there was a new AD, railed against Spokane for not supporting the very good teams he put out n 81/83/84. All bowl teams by today's standards.

And please do tell what talent he wasted by running a system that got these talented players to the Palouse? It is like saying Switzer wasted Billy Sims, David Overstreet, and a variety of other backs by running the wishbone.

Mark Rypien? Is that the one player he wasted their talent? He got Broussard, Swinton, Rosie, and many others like Dan Lynch because of the system he ran.

You are way better at grading thesis' papers in third grade than knowing about college football and the Cougs back then.

But I understand your point. You see wins and losses. I see the importance of the coach past that. You would rathe be 8-4 and in the WAC, I would rather be 4-8 and in the Pac 10. But that is just me.

Thank you for confirming Walden slunk out of town. He burned through his goodwill. He knew and ran for it.

I'm listening to Walden. He was there. You're not. You're listening to yourself.

Walden didn't slink out of town. He knew he used up his goodwill, but WSU was not firing him in 86. He found another job. And tell me when in third grade which players talents did he waste by running the veer. Fairly simple question.

You still beating this dead horse today Gibby? Who's this "pissing away his best recruit's career" you refer to? Future Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, or future NFL Rookie of the Year Rueben Mayes? Yes Walden pissed away their careers. They probably are still cussing him today. We would have won the 1985 Apple Cup had Walden let Rypien throw the ball instead of running the rump-turn option all game. Oh wait, he threw for 3 TD's and we won that game. And poor Rueben Mayes. All through 1984 (and 1985) he was ignored as Rypien carried the ball all year long. I'm still mystified as to how Mayes gained 1,637 yards in 1984 and set the then CFB rushing record with 357 yards against Oregon. Yep, wasted career(s).

Or perhaps your Walden butt hurt began in 1984 when WSU quit playing games in Spokane for good. Couldn't ride your tricycle to home games anymore? Hahahahaha :)

You and Ed meet at the gym?

You know that Rypien was quitting, right? Walden drove up to the Spokane, hat in hand to get him back.

That was in 1983, for 2 games, but good try (not really a good try). Let's see, in 1983 Rypien was a Sophomore, and a well-deserving Ricky Turner started at QB. WSU went 7-4, beat the mutts in Seattle, and:

"Walden was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, and four Cougars were selected to the conference's first team: linemen Keith Millard and Eric Williams on defense, with guard Dan Lynch and sophomore running back Kerry Porter on offense. Millard was the thirteenth overall pick of the 1984 NFL draft, selected by the Minnesota Vikings."

That Millard guy, another career wasted by Walden.

Gibby, I have much respect and appreciation on your posts, but this is crazy crazy.

I had lunch with Rypien.

He did not hate Walden.
5591, please clarify? Do you mean that the fact you have respect and appreciation for Gibby's posts is crazy crazy? If so I agree wholeheartedly with your post. :)

And thanks for the Rypien affirmation.

I think Gibby has some decent discussions/thoughts.

Just wiggity wack on thinking Walden sucked ass at Wazzu.

Again... Walden was miraculous all things considered.

For F's sake... we had to play at Joe Albi!

With 99.9% certainty, those old Walden guys would still kill for him. And they're in their 60's now.

I wouldn't test them, that's for sure. Ain't as good as they once wuz but the ones I know are as good once as they ever wuz.

Not sire your point about Rypien. Is he the one you are referring to as a waste of talent? Walden recruited to a system, same as Leach. Not understanding what Rypien quitting for two weeks has much to do with anything. It has been said Bledsoe was going to leave if he didnt play his freshman year, and that explains why he lost his redshirt year by playing against Walla Walla CC.

Since this was right in your sweet spot as an 8 year old, who was the best young back recruited by Walden in tbe 85 class... hint there was a more decorated player than Broussard in that class .

Your generation really struggles with reading comprehension and likes to make shit up that people didn’t say.

You, Ed, Loyal and some others would suck the chrome of Walden’s trailer hitch. You should be embarrassed worshipping the guy. Why you do so is quite a mystery.

I never said he sucked by the way. Those are your words.

Oh Gibby, Gibby, Gibby. You've been raging on Walden endlessly. But you didn't utter the word "suck". That makes you right. Right?

And for "making shit up"?
Gibby: "Walden was pissing away his best recruit's career running the option"
Ed: "Is he the one you are referring to as a waste of talent?"

"Waste of talent" vs "pissing away career". Clearly Ed was making shit up with regard to what you said and what you meant. Give it up dude. You are just looking more and more silly, petty, and pretty much stoopid. Oh and nice dig about your elders and betters. You talk that way at the office to the older partners? Or are the partners younger than you? How about judges? "Your honor, your reading comprehension sucks because you are old".

And finally, Glibby, I never said that I worship Walden. You state above that I did. I did not. Which makes you WRONG. You are WRONG Gibby. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Or did you mean that remark only to Ed? Or 5501? Or "some others"? Is that going to be your next pathetic comeback? Hahahahahaha! You are getting laughed at by the entire board.

On the CougEd Walden curve WSU is winning the Holiday Bowl by 28.

And I definitely wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. Or on posts. 😁

Oh fer Gawd's sake 5591, don't apologize to that jackass. The thing Gibby wants in his mouth is not your words. He'll be waiting for you down at his favorite gym tomorrow. Look for the rather plain, pudgy guy with loose shorts and foot on the bench with his tiny junk hanging out. Bring your microscope and tweezers. Hahahahahahaha!! :)

Slightly funny point given.

But seriously... there are very few posters on this board that I think are sh*theads.

As long as there's intelligence, debate, and zest with shit-talk when arguing... I'm all for it.

Love for WSU and hate for fuw makes the world a happy place.
