WSU struggles with recruiting in relation to other Pac 12 schools. There are varying circumstances as to why this is, but it's w.o question. Is the triple option a way to neutralize that?

Air Force had an athletic 2-star QB, a 3-star RB from IMG Academy, and the kid who put 180 yards is hardly mentioned in the recruiting world... had 4 offers... Army, Air Force, Harvard and the worst team in the Big 12, Kansas. Their offensive line came in at an average weight of around 280 lbs... Yet they looked freakin' fierce out there.

Navy finished 10-2 and in the top 25... Army almost upset Michigan earlier this season... Air Force finished 11-2... they all run a similar variation of this offense... is there something to be said about this?

WSU can recruit better than all these schools... the triple option seems neutralize the gap in size and recruiting talent... it adds an element of toughness that I think is missing in the Coug program. The Air Raid is a nice gimmick, but Air Force made it look like lolipops and rainbows at the end of the day... at least the triple option allows you to control the pace of the game/clock.

So... Would WSU be a force if they ran the triple option?

No. WSU D was incredibly weak this year. AF is decent but would have several losses in the Pac 12.

Give any DC worth his salt time to shut down a triple option and it would be pain.

O isn't the problem anyway. Goold OL, Good backs, good WRs etc. at WSU

You're right, putting up big offensive numbers isn't an issue.

What is an issue is controlling the pace of the game and being able to put teams away by grinding the clock. Air Force doesn't have a good defense, they instead play defense by keeping their offense on the field.

WSU's D isn't good, don't think anyone would ever fight me there... and running an offense where if it's not successful, it's off the field in 30 seconds, exposes the hell out of your defense. Hence the 35 pt. comeback against UCLA.

UCLA loss was also due to a lot of fumbleitis. (7 turnover?)

It worked really well this game for AF, but it they turn it over or have fumbleitis and go down a couple of scores it is game over. They aren't coming back. their margin of error is razor thin.

The coaching and leadership was plain terrible this year. Claeys saw the writing on the wall. Leach needs to fire his drinking buddies and get serious if he wants to win again. The blame is on Leach who is a stubborn man and set in his ways For better or worse he will be at WSU for a long time. This was not his finest hour to say the least

Oregon State tried the triple option about 25-30 years ago, complete failure.

A "force"? No. At best, we'd be no more a "force" than we have been under Leach. I do think a Pac12 program could run the triple option with some success though. I thought OSU should have hired the Navy guy a couple years ago.

A force? No. You'd see something like we've seen with the Air Raid but a little worse and with less upside, IMO. Wouldn't have any more 69-63 or 60-59 losses, though.

When I coached we ran the Houston Veer. It was a good offense, but you have to have depth at quarterback. You put a lot of time into your quarterback. If the starter gets hurt there is a big drop off. We switched to the "I", because we wanted to protect our quarterback. The quarterbacks were developed year round. We did not want to put them in unnecessary risk. Also, at that time opponents turned your option into a sweep by attacking the quarterback. I am not a fan of the true triple option. With the AR you get the same thing with less risk to the quarterback.

Could Alabama win a nc with the triple option if they recruited for it and coached it ? Yes they could imo. Other schools that can recruit high level talent could be dangerous with the triple option or the air raid imo like auburn Texas Oklahoma.

trends are circular and what goes out of fashion can come back as defenses counter and evolve. Lombardis power sweep was about execution.

Another troll post: “would Wazzu be better if they were more like the MWC?”
