It is easier in BB since the season is over during the portal period. Hard to imagine bailing on your team before the bowl game then coming back after and saying "just kidding". I would like to see (maybe too late now) Dickert do what ASU's coach is doing and say hey, you can declare for the portal and still play in the bowl (playoff in their case). There are 3 groups:

The ones good enough to get a bunch of money...more than we would pay...and who are therefore probably leaving, unless we can offer enough to keep them.

The ones who would never see the field with us and are hoping to find a lower level place where they can play. If they find a place they will leave. If they don't find a place, they will stay, even if the 105 cap means they are not on the team. Of the three groups, this one probably cares most about academic progress and getting out with a degree that would get them a job.

In between are guys who figure they might get an offer somewhere, either to play on a lower level team or to be paid something to be a back up on a well funded team. Those guys will look at the offer; then compare to what ever we might pay; talk to CJD about what their chances with us would be next season (Dickert is generally considered to be pretty candid in those conversations) and then decide if the difference is enough to justify the hassle of a move. Several of these guys will probably end up staying.
