Anyone else see the video of him handing cash to a player on the field after the game?

Not a good look. Wonder what sanctions the NCAA will hand down to Louisiana Lafayette???

I read it was fake money

It wasn't. LSU just trying to cover it up.

It was stupid, but what do you expect from OBJ. I doubt it will result in much more than some secondary violation. LSU should just get out in front of it and self report it and have the players give the money back. Not like they had anything to do with it anyway.

In the eyes of the NCAA the players will likely have everything to do with it. They know they cant take $. They took the $. The film doesnt lie.

Yes, this. Burrow said it was real. Just have the players give it back. At least those still with eligibility

I meant LSU didn't have anything to do with it.

As for the players, it was kind of thrust upon them. And by a celebrity. I could see the defense that they were just confused and didn't know how to handle that. This is assuming they gave the money back, of course.

LSU has everything to do with it. They let the guy on the sideline. If you line up 50 NFL players and said pick three players who you would think would hand players cash on a sideline , Odell would be at the top of the list.

I don't think LSU would have any reason to think he'd hand out $1,000 bills to their players.

Like I said, self report it and ask the players to give it back. Probably results in a slap on the wrist from the NCAA.

Do you think that $ didnt get spent on Bourbon Street? lol

They may need another donation from someone else to pay it back lol.

OBJ is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed, but why would anyone think he'd commit blatant NCAA violations ON THE FIELD AFTER THE national championship game when there a dozen or so TV cameras rolling and somewhere around 50,000 people all with smartphones in the building watching?

Simple... Ego.

Sometimes I wish the NFL, and other professional sports leagues, would just start fining and suspending the Hell out of guys for stupid behavior like this.

Wayne Gretzky said a long time ago that if the NHL really wanted to eliminate fights and cheap shots, they would. They'd start suspending guys 1mo, 6mo, 1yr for each successive offense, and the problem would go away. The reason they don't is because it's good for their brand. They like the image.

Someday, these professional sports leagues are going to punch back and hold athletes to a higher standard of personal conduct. I'm not a "PC" guy about a lot of stuff, but stupid, bad decisions would get me fired from my job, as they should in any.

Yep. That's why there's 100 people standing around, smiling, and taking pix and video of OBJ and not one person stepping up and telling him "hey man, this is a BAD idea that's going to bite you and your school..."

Not a good look but if they are guys already declared is it a violation technically? Soon as the game is over they are draft eligible guys they can take whatever money they want.

now that said, do I think money is flowing one way or another at LSU? Yup

Yeah, sorry Ed but this is a dumb hot take. Celebs (esp former players) are on the sidelines all the time. A school can't be faulted for presuming celebs won't be handing out wads of cash. Never saw McConaughey do it in Austin, or Herschel Walker at Georgia or any of 5000 other celebs milling about sidelines with empty pockets.

Burrow also seemed to think he was off the hot seat because he was "no longer a student athlete."

But what year is it in Baton Rouge that some spokesperson volunteered that "it was fake money" when that was clearly a lie, and thought that would be the end of it with no possible leaks or further investigation? It's almost like that person is used to dealing only with diehard loyal local media and expected the same "take it to the grave" treatment with the national media as well.

My favorite though is the Richard Jewell type security guard who threatened to kick the LSU players out of the stadium for smoking celebratory cigars after completing one of the greatest undefeated CFB seasons in history. Know when to pick your battles, man.

Good question. Where does the reach of the NCAA stop? 2 mins after the game is over?

I don't necessarily to get too into the weeds on this, but I think one of the guys on tape taking money is a junior. I think he's going to the NFL, but he didn't declare himself for the draft 30 seconds after the game was over.

I assume there's some rule about them being student athletes until they hire an agent, or something.

You are correct, who would think he would hand out money. But the odds of embarrassing your school are extremely high. And he just did. And then begs the question, has anyone else given these kids money? Is their championship now tainted. I am not sure it is as easy as giving your money back because you can't just give back the image of it happening.

LSU really only has two choices.

Self report or make it look as though this sort of thing is routine at their school.

I'm not sure why the AD is not ALREADY shouting from the rooftops that this is not how they do things. Either he is stupid, oblivious or he really thinks there is nothing unusual about handing cash to players.

Their AD recently worked at the UW.

Chip...first this is not a "hot take". It is an opinion. Second, you are now going to have the NCAA sniffing around, seeing if there was other types of cash inducements, and third the line Walden would use is "the NCAA is investigating Alabama and just put Mississippi State on probation.

This time it may be LSU gets investigated and MSU gets put on probation.

At this point, he probably doesn't have to do anything really. The SEC gets the "too big to fail" treatment. Whenever something like this happens down there the NCAA usually gives them cover. You'd think the initial statements from the NCAA would at least be that they need to investigate this further and even if it's not a violation, it's not something that should be happening.

I don't dispute that it's stupid to have OBJ anywhere near your program, but that, in and of itself, is not an NCAA violation and it doesn't mean they were implicit in him thrusting wads of cash upon their players.

We are nowhere near "lack of institutional control" or anything similar. This is not like catching the CFP refs leaving a sportsbook in Vegas, or a bunch of recruits flipping when family members get jobs at the new school, or SMU having a mysterious cash box in the office. One guy, one occasion... they can sniff all they want and check out Walla Walla Basketball and University of Phoenix Online while they're at it.

Also not clear where you're getting the idea that LSU had to have known there was a "high chance of embarrassing" the program. Really nothing embarrassing about having prospective recruits see one of the greatest receivers in the game on your sideline at the national championship game. AFAIK it's not like OBJ is world famous for his public embarrassments or illegal cash gifts.

Arrest warrant sent out to someone handing out fake money? I don't think so!

I wondered that also but the paper this morning said the arrest warrant was because he was picked up on a video slapping someone on the ass. I don't know the gender of the someone but this was apparently why the misdemeanor arrest warrant was issued.

It was a male security guard, and the slap was akin to an "atta boy" you'd get from a coach.

I swear to fcking Christ, wtf is wrong with our society that he needs to be charged with a crime for that? What a waste of taxpayer dollars...
