David Shaw is cleaning house at Stanford

I saw the portal today and noticed how many Stanford guys were there. UCLA had a bunch of kids too.

I wonder if Shaw saw his 2019 season and realized he needs to 'step back' and let his younger players play. The Srs who are expendable are allowed to walk.

Any any good?? The portal is about the size a black hole compared to what it was.

If you cant get on the field for a bad Stanford team, where are you transferring???

Stanford gets guys. They have more than their fair share of 4 star kids. Seeing this many guys roll on down the road, walking away from the one thing that Stanford sells best (education), is telling.

Stanfords ship is sinking.

Shaw has certainly failed to get it done, but I can't put it on his recruiting classes; they have not looked bad, at least from my view. And I'm not sure I can lay it on a failure to develop players, because some of their players have developed well. I suspect it is simple analysis of the opponent and game planning, as well as adjustments during the game. Getting out-coached in the game prep and field phases.

Yes it is interesting the we have shredded Stanford's defense the last couple of years (along with Oregon's) but what everyone remembers are the failures in the Apple Cup. Certainly Shaw has studied what has worked against us but he certainly hasn't made it work during games.

I think there are guys that know how to stop the air raid, guys that are close to figuring it out and guys that have zero clue. Shaw has zero clue.

Oh yes Herm Edwards was one of your coaches “close to figuring it out” despite playing against for the 1st Time.

Herm held the Cougs to 498yds of Offense
Herm held the Cougs to 29 1st Downs
Herm held the Cougs to 2-2 on 4th Downs
Herm created No Turnovers
Herm lost time of possession
Herm scored game-winner :34 seconds left

Herm won. He did things with his defense that were similar to uw and cal.

All those stats you listed dont matter. Neither does your lame attempt to discredit me. Or your worthless opinion on the matter.

That’s right, you’re under the belief we also had a good defense (#113 of #130 in The Nation)

Herm had 532yds of Total offense vs your cue-up the Jaws Themed Cougar D

Herm scored 4 TD plays of 32yds or more (40,86,32,33) vs a defense that played well enough to win the Pac12 North in your view.

As I recall, before the game Herm said something along the lines of “we can’t stop the air raid from getting yards but need to stop them from scoring often enough to keep it close”. Seems like exactly what he did.

You discredit yourself. No one needs to help you with that.

Bianca Biggs has overtaken Ed as the village idiot.

I am not sure I buy 100% what Biggs is offering up, but I do agree at some level . In b-ball Mike D’Antoni doesn’t care about defense . Everything he does he believes his offense will outscore everyone else. Here is the problem- when he loses it is because they can’t play defense and someone else slowed down his offense .

The imbalance of his core beliefs ends end hurting him when you get in the playoffs. Herm did exactly what he needed to do. Let the air raid get all kinds of yards and not give up more than 32. If WSU scored plus 40 every game they would have been 10-2.

Price gave Doba first choice of players. Price was fond of saying he could have used a guy like Eaton on the oline .

So yeah Herm gave up lots of yards , lots of first downs and the biggest stat is 32 . Number of points given up .

Basketball coaches don't have a defensive coordinator, nor do they change all personnel for each change of posession

apples and oranges, poor comparison

I am not under the belief WSU had a good defense. That is fake news.

I believe the defense played well enough to win games. That does not mean they are good. Good enough to hold a team to one point less than WSU.

Only an idiot would ignore how many turn overs the offense had, how bad the special teams play was and deny that those things had 0 effect on the defenses ability to hold teams out of the end zone.

you stated on here weeks back ghat this defense played well enough to get to Pac12 Title Game. You stated it was the offenses fault that they didn’t get to Santa Clara. Ask DGibbons. He was mocking you for absurd claim than too.

I have dgib on ignore because he is a dope. I wont waste my time reading his idiotic drivel.

What powerhouse team is in the PAC 12??? Show me the team that smokes WSU off the field if WSU plays well??? This was not some murderers row of a conference schedule that WSU, if they played well, couldnt have run the table.

The offense has left this defense jammed up a ridiculous amount of times. Same for the special teams. If you cant see that you're as friggin’ stupid as dgib.

Almost 18 thousand posts. And most of them just like this. Nothing about actual football and insulting a person with actual football smarts. You bring the wow factor to a new level.

According to Football Outsiders, the special teams ranked 32nd.

UCLA game withstanding, they really were not bad. Pretty good actually.

I would agree. Arguably, the best placekicker in the nation, one of the conference's best punters (2nd only to ASU), 3rd best punt return average, middle of the Pac kickoff return average (I would say Travell Harris individually is one of the conference's best and most dangerous returners). Statistically, I can't tell how our kick coverage teams did....but as you say, I really only remember UCLA game as being a total disaster. That was a bad one, but all three components of the team– offense, defense, & special teams– shared blame for that debacle.

Glad Cougar

And the Oregon game?

Losing 2 games because of your kick/punt teams doesnt equal good special teams play.

If you lost two football games because your special teams gave up touchdowns or failed to kick the ball into the endzone, would Urban Meyer think that was ok??? What about Pete Carroll? Think Steve Spurrier is on board with losing 2 football games because of special teams? Think any coach that wins titles agrees with you??? How about Leach? Hey Mike, youre gonna lose two football games this year cause of special teams failures. Youre good right???

You are wrong on the internet.

How do you share blame when the offense has 6 turnovers and special teams gives up 2 touchdowns??? Not to say the defense played great, they didnt. Remove 6 turn overs and 2 returns for touchdowns and the defense played well enough to win. It wasnt their fault they lost to UCLA.

Maybe I should clarify my statement of poor special teams. When I write special teams sucks, I am not pointing the finger at the field goal kicker. Nor Harris.

I am pointing the finger at kick and punt teams either not covering for shit, failing to kick the ball deep enough or out of bounds or the coaching decisions made to not kick the ball out of bounds or into the end zone.

So, you’re recanting one of your mindless rants about not having a return man earlier this season. Cool.

They allowed one decent return against Oregon.
