That kind of thought is exactly how and why Canada and other NATO countries did nothing when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, did nothing when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 despite promising to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense, then said "oh shit" in 2022 and have a tantrum when they are criticized for it. And of course will do nothing in the Indo-Pacific where the shit could really hit the fan. Canada's annual shortfall on the 2 percent threshold is about $20 billion. That's equal to 8 Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers each year. Over a decade that's obviously equal to 80 front line surface combatants. That's just one of our allies.

That kind of thought is exactly how and why Canada and other NATO countries did nothing when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, did nothing when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 despite promising to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense, then said "oh shit" in 2022 and have a tantrum when they are criticized for it. And of course will do nothing in the Indo-Pacific where the shit could really hit the fan. Canada's annual shortfall on the 2 percent threshold is about $20 billion. That's equal to 8 Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers each year. Over a decade that's obviously equal to 80 front line surface combatants. That's just one of our allies.

This compares 2021 defense spending to 2024.

Who’s at 2 percent? Look how NATO allies have increased their defense spending since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As the NATO Summit gets underway in Washington, 23 of 32 allies now meet the defense spending target of 2 percent of GDP.

The two percent was agreed upon by NATO defense ministers in 2006, then "formalized" in 2014. Our allies took 8 years to formalize a commitment. See the pattern?
