Another bad analogy, Flat.
Nobody on the right is saying "we want to take away citizens right to vote." There isn't an underlying threat to voting rights granted to people who are legally entitled, nor is there a legitimate push to completely remove voting rights, from any class of citizen.
There is a real, verbalized threat to the 2nd amendment rights, similar to what Australia did. That slippery slope has roots in actual rhetoric.
It's not a bad analogy. It's pretty much a mirror image.
The right isn't coming out and saying they're taking away anyone's right to vote (with the exception of some on the fringes). If they did, the courts would have no choice but to throw it out. Instead, they're trying to make it harder for certain people to vote (particularly groups/areas that are reliably left-leaning). They want to create a national voter registry that shows who's where, how reliably they vote, designating exactly where they're allowed to vote, and ideally showing
how you vote.
On the flip side, the left (except for some on the fringes) isn't saying they want to take
all the guns, they generally target certain types. And they do want to take away all of their target types (but they can do that, because guns can be stereotyped and discriminated against. Guns don't have rights. Yet.) They want a national registry of who has what guns, where, and why.
The left thinks a national registry is good for guns. The right thinks it's an unnecessary, unconstitutional invasion of privacy.
The right thinks a national registry is good for voters. The left thinks it's an unnecessary, unconstitutional invasion of privacy.
Personally, I think both sides are right...and wrong. Both registries would be fine if they only went to a certain point. Problem is that each side wants their registry to go farther than it should, and each side thinks the other is overreaching.
I think the voting issue is basically solved if they just eliminate polling places altogether and make the whole country vote by mail. As long as that is also accompanied by a method that verifies they're only sending ballots to people who should be voting.
