The genie is out of the bottle. If there is outrage over kids getting paid now, wait until you see what happens when the NCAA takes it away. This ship has sailed.

We all know the NCAA and schools are greedy. Total money whores. So how does the NCAA add boundaries that level the playing field while not taking $ away from the talent?

They have to limit a programs ability to stockpile kids AND remove the free for all in free agency.

Cut the roster size. If BYU can get all their walk ons full tuition deals, so can Alabama. Watching those schools soak up all the talent means everyone else will be recruiting the portal soley.

When I write cut the roster size I mean to 70. Total. You get a 3 deep and 4 spots for kickers, punters, snappers, returner. No walk ons. No practice squad.

If you remove the bottom 15 players from Georgia’s roster, are they worse? No. But those kids are going somewhere to make someone better. Will those teams now beat Georgia? Probably not. But they will have more talent to give them a better game.

We are seeing kids enter the portal on a Monday and signing a scholarship on a Tuesday. Once a kid enters the portal his business is his business. If a booster from another program has been contacting him making offers while he is on the roster??? I have an issue with that. If you wanna leave, fine. If you wanna entertain deals while playing on Saturdays??? Hard no.

What do teams do to prevent kids from leaving? We may see high school kids being offered career long scholarships. The only way out is the NFL or mutual agreement. Breaking the contact has a buyout price ~ you have no more eligibility. Too tough? Too one sided? I dunno. But the high school kids are going to watch their opportunities diminish fast.

I want kids to make money. I want them to be able to choose their path. I think it’s crap everyone around them is getting wealthy and they aren’t.

I also think there should be rules in free agency and a way to make sure the talent gets spread around the country.

Hate me.

The NCAA let the players have sex on the first date. They are going to have difficulty easing back to second base.

The vast majority of student-athletes are going to go blind.

Interesting ideas. This is going to be fluid. Cutting the rosters back won’t happen I don’t think. It seems silly to have 85 scholarships for a sport that has 11 starters on each side, but you’ve also got 90% of your freshman who are not physically ready to compete at that level, so right there you are down to 60 or so scholarship guys who are physically ready (and another handful of walk ons who can play.) NFL rosters are what 47, 53 with your squad. So it’s not that far off.

I think it puts pressure on high school kids to be physically ready asap. It isn’t the job of the NFL to make college kids lift weights. They pick from the best of the best, ready or not. College is different cause kids are still growing. But again, it isn’t the job of colleges to prepare high school kids. Kids are gonna have to do the work.

With a roster limit of 70 it puts more value on having a scholarship in the first place. Does that alleviate some pressure on schools to find NIL deals for kids???

When Bill Moos said a rising tide lifts all ships he was spot on. A fair tv deal for the Pac 12 did wonders for WSU facilities. Is there a way to negotiate a tv deal for ALL power 5 teams ???

it basically has to get to a slotted/quota system. You can have up to X players paid X amount and no more. Presumably something like 22 players paid no more than an average of 50k or soemthing like that. It would even the playing field rather than destroy college football.

NIL money will always be around now, but there will also be restrictions that help level things off.

There's already a rule in place where kids can only transfer once without having to sit out a year. That's a good start. Roster size restrictions can also be implemented.

There will be some action taken. Even the biggest blue bloods are expressing concern.

One area that needs to be addressed is Salary Cap or NIL cap is part of the answer, schools with unlimited funds will benefit the most, can't allow that to happen

So you wanna add a salary cap? That still doesn’t limit the stockpiling of kids further down the roster.

The loss of a year could definitely hold kids that have transferred already in place. Which is why I see some schools being very selective on the HS kids they take.

The blue bloods have their cake and eat it too. I don’t give 2 fuc$ing shits what they have to say. They have the best access to top high school talent, top portal talent, biggest NIL deals. And now they are gonna complain? Why would any school that isn’t a blue blood give them sway?

And if you limit their roster size it will. Adding oversight to deals by the school could be a problem. The schools can’t get involved right now.

Schools with unlimited funds that have a roster limit will have to watch kids walk away. With a salary cap they can still get them to come.

Congress could start by reforming Title IX.

I don't see reducing scholarships down to 70 because of Title 9. That would mean a reduce in woman sports as well. I like the idea, unless they just disperse those to the other men sports. I like the idea. Game got more competitive when they went to the 85. Also, bring back Prop 48 while we're at, but since a lot schools are no longer demanding the SATs that pretty much did that.

Opening a whole new can of worms here - Title IX as it relates to biological females or Title IX as it relates to those who identify/may be transitioning to female/can't decide but couldn't make the mens varsity?

I don't think college football will be able to continue floating all the nonrevenue sports, especially womens (no matter who was born with whatever plumbing) if things continue as-is. That will ultimately lead to less opportunities for everyone, which obviously is the opposite of what Title IX was intended to address.

Why would a reduction of men’s scholarships mean a reduction in women’s scholarships?

Title 9 is about having equal opportunity for men and women. If anything, the reduction of men’s scholarships would put schools in better compliance. As evidenced by the disappearance of wrestling.

another communist idea without limiting what a kid can make or coaches can be paid:
How about a luxury tax?
if you want yo pay your coach $10m, tax it at 10%-20% and distribute it to the other schools.
Tax the NIL money and distribute it as well.
The NFL isn't communist. Neither is the NBA or MLB.

If the NCAA wants to act like a professional league, it should put in protections, policies and operating procedures so that the product presented can be sold for the most value. That's about as capitalist as you can get. Mo' money for everyone.

Socialism is where only a few elite benefit from the system and the rest need to be happy with their leftover bread crumbs.

(See how I worked that bread crumb angle in?)

The news was that A&M dolled out $30M for their recruiting class, or whatever it was. My question would be, why even bother offering those kids scholarships then? What's stopping schools from giving out 25 scholarships AND brining in another 25 kids on NIL deals? The kids getting $100K, $200K, $500K, whatever it is can pay their own tuition. The old SEC oversigning model is back.

This gets to your idea about eliminating walk ons. Alabama could essentially have 85 kids on scholly and another 85 "walk ons" geting their school paid for with cash.

Ive been writing this for months. Now you know what I started a thread about limiting the roster size.

That's my take too. Less men's scholarships means actual Title IX compliance. And a hunch says a lot of programs likely aren't in compliance.

I'm glad athletes across the board are able to make $ on their image and likeness. And I like that athletes can make money and put it toward good causes. However, it feels like many CFB players think they're better than any other athlete on campus, that NIL should only revolve around them, and their attitudes toward NIL feel more aggressive. I don't care about another sh*tty designed hat or T-shirt, bro. The world already has enough of that.

There are twins on the basketball team at Fresno State taking down millions.

When the womens teams figure out how to monetize their thirsty followers… look out. When Maybeline, Revlon, fashion designers figure out how to use NIL to tap into tween girl dollars…. look out.

This isn’t just men’s sports.

Funny, I just wrote that Title IX would have to be the hero to this whole situation in the "why the hate" thread. I do believe we're correct on that, if for no other reason than it actually has teeth and leverage, unlike the impotent NCAA.

They don't have to be in compliance, and usually aren't because of the insane revenue the football team makes and how much they spend on it. It doesn't matter to them anyway because all it means is less federal funding, but they don't gaf because they have more money than Jesus.

Had forgotten about them.

I'm so out of the TikTok/video making market, so I was likely to miss that.

Never heard about this WWE offering until Biggs noted it. Interesting move on McMahons part.

Biggs brought up an issue I agree with, and mentioned months ago. Don't underestimate the ability some women have to make off the NIL deal, their potential could be even greater, the FSU twins are an example, just look at some of the Olympic athletes, many female athletes have better endorsement deals than their male counter parts. One college athlete that comes to mind, from the past, was Allison Stokke the pole vaulter from Cal, would have done well, she actually went on to a somewhat successful modeling career, then met and married Rickie and the rest is history, and she's set for life. If you don't know who she is, do yourself a favor and simple google
