Does anybody know the probable story on why Stanford went from the 4,5th place team last season to 5-11 this season?

Cal level injuries? Whole team either graduated, went pro, left via Portal, etc? Coaching Change?

Bright Spots:

Tough D

Played extremely well

Shot well

Won a CLOSE one.

Only had 6 turnovers all game.

Jaki getting back on track.

Rodman being the CLUTCH go-to scorer at end of game, and ASSERTING himself.

Not so bright Spots:

Bad freethrow shooting down the stretch that would have made for a easier win.

It’s good for this team to start winning the close games it shows character especially without their leader Bamba. Sweep at home that’s always been the goal with at least a split on the road. Nice job coach and team!!

Oh and the answer to the above question about what happened to Stanford? Stanford hasn’t placed higher than 7th in the league since 2017-18 last 5 years. They were 9th last year at 8-12.

This was the type of game where our lack of playmakers and a true point guard nearly killed us.
Well as I've said before I generally accept this criticism. It is a problem with this team but in this case we actually got decent shots down the stretch. Rodman hit a couple of clutch 3's but other than that we didn't make anything. The inability to make free throws continues to haunt us. It would have been nice if Rodman had boxed out on the last shot but we got away with it.
Gueye got in foul trouble and was generally a non factor the entiire 2nd half. Jacki hitting some 3's helped a lot. Not sure where Powell and Mullins disappeared to in the 2nd half.

Mullins is such a defensive liability that we can't keep him on the floor during crunch time. It's a huge problem. Gueye needs to spend the entire off season working on his shot. We need a point guard.

With all of that said, if Bamba plays today we win by 10+.

That's the analysis.

Gueye scored 24 vs Arizona, and it was a 3 by Gueye that put the dagger into Arizona and ICED that game.

And Gueye made 1,2,3 nice high post, post up midrange jumpshots vs Stanford.

He is better then you think, and a better shooter then you think, and according to WSU announcers, he Gueye is starting to show up on NBA mock draft boards, and that he is improving, getting better each game.

He Gueye needs to work on his shot, not to get such a shot, but to KEEP shot, and make it even better then it already is.

Gueye was in FOUL TROUBLE, that's why he didn't have the chance to produce as much.

Powell is A TRUE POINT GUARD.

The problem with Powell is he doesn't finish at rim enough, and doesn't take enough midrange, 3 point shots, and is too unselfish, dishes out too many assist at times, and is less able to guard point guards and 2 guards on the perimeter, because of slower lateral quickness, like Mullins.

The reason the Stanford game was closer then it should have been was not lack of point guard, lack of shooters, playmakers, etc.

The reason why it was so close, is because Gueye got into FOUL TROUBLE, and MISSED FREETHROWS down the stretch.

If not for the shooting of Jaki, and the CLUTCHNESS of Rodman down the stretch, etc, WSU would have lost the game, instead of winning it.

Not to be a party pooper, but the Cougs were damn lucky. Stanford had a "point blank" put back to win. Fundamentals remain the big weakness on this team. Rodman had a great game, we wouldn't have been in a position to win it without him, no doubt, but he was caught ball watching at the end, failing to block out, and allowed the second highest percentage shot in basketball to be taken as time expired.

Smith came in as a fundamental first coach, what happened?

Until it is solved, we will continue to underperform our talent level.

Gueye is getting more comfortable in his role as option 1 in the offense but shoots a low percentage if you take away the dunks. It’s coming around, he can obviously shoot it’s just a matter of getting more confidence and with that will come consistency.

On the positive side of Gueye being in foul trouble, I thought Dion had his best game of the season. He looked more confident than I've ever seen him. He gave us a couple nice buckets, and 4 offensive rebounds which was huge. He really hustled on those O boards.

He shot a low % on his dunks yesterday.

Beautiful move to the hoop and he missed the jam.

Teams are going to key on Mullins at the 3 point line. Should open up some back door looks and open 3s for some of the other shooters.

Gueye is a great talent and one of the conferences best prospects, but if he doesn’t improve his shot, he won’t make an NBA roster. That’s not a criticism. The NBA is a freakishly competitive league. Look at the 3s, 4s, and 5s on the worst teams in the NBA. It’s crazy.

I think Gueye has the potential to develop his shot. He has a nice release and good fundamentals, but his arc is inconsistent. 67% free throws and well under 40% of shots outside the paint isn’t good enough for an NBA post who doesn’t have the body to play inside.

Looked more comfortable. Seemed to keep it simple and not try to do too much. We really need him to steal minutes the rest of the way.

Ok Mik you’re right we need Bamba back.

Not quite as excited as after Cal but we shot like crap from the free throw line, Stanford was draining 3s, refs took it upon themselves to disrupt our mid game flow by calling a phantom 3rd on MG, and we survived. Now go take two winnable games on the road and get yourself a huge home series with the Zonas lined up where Beasley should be rocking.
