The amount of new offers is alarming

If that’s the case, pay him $2,000,000.

Yeah, that's it.

Some people need a change of scenary, a new challenge, milder winters, etc. Just because a dude is making $4m doesnt mean he should or shouldn't be motivated by that dollar figure.

I get what youre saying. But you still have to fake it until you make it for $4,000,000.

His fire burned out at WSU. If MSU is what it takes for him to get excited again, cool. Thanks for the great years. Best of luck.

I won’t use the term “burned out”, but 2019 was very taxing on him . He took a lateral position without asking for a counter from WSU. Says he was done in Pullman .
Or perhaps he wanted to challenge himself in the best conference and the huge pay raise for himself and his staff didn't hurt.

Mike Leach was in Pullman for 8 seasons. He probably realized that the 11-2 2018 season was as good as it was going to get for him at WSU. It’s hard to recruit there and hard to retain quality assistant/position coaches. It takes more effort and execution to keep your head above water. It’s a reality in Pullman and with limited financial resources.

Mississippi State may be the WSU of the SEC, but there is more money (for him and his assistants). It’s far easier to recruit to Starkville, as the talent pool is much deeper. The SEC is the by far the best conference which presents a new challenge, it’s a new part of the country (which is energizing), it’s closer to Key West and family.

If I’m in Mike Leach’a shoes, it makes sense to leave.

His base at Miss State is a million more than his scheduled base and media compensation was going to be at WSU.

Yeah but he was also owed by WSU a $750K retention bonus if he stayed there through next season. So next season is essentially a wash.

Leach should be sending Gardner Minshew and Peyton Pelluer commission checks for his Mississippi State deal.

So Minshew received nothing out of the deal ?

He would be entering his second year as a GA at Alabama right now.

You just hired a coach for 6 times what he was making previously, maybe you should be more focused on whether or not he will be worth that kind of crazy bump in pay.

That is the way I see it too. The pay raise was nice but as Ping pointed out, when factoring in the retention bonus, it was essentially a wash. The attrition within the assistants over the last few years must have really bothered him. Both coaching expertise and recruiting have suffered from the exodus. Also agree with you that the chance to match wits with the coaching staffs in the SEC attracted him. Add in that he is now closer to children and grandchildren and his transfer becomes a no-brainer.

The amount Leach gets for media compensation has not been announced, as far as I can tell. He was getting over a million at WSU, and I cant think he accepted less.

At WSU it was Pac-12 networks and IMG, interviews, coach’s radio show. I doubt it was a coincidence that Leach was always so happy to talk to Yam and Chasanow.
How is the dollar amount set on this compensation? And it is above and beyond their salary?

Don’t know. Rolovich’s base compensation is $2 million. Media compensation is $1 million.

The weekend is not over, but I was hoping to have news regarding a few commits from this weekend. Hopefully we will in the next couple of days.

On the first or second Paul Wulff Show in early 2008, Clambake Mary fell into line and stabbed Bill Doba in the back.

Oh my ...Clamback Mary the Judas of Coug football. Just out of curiosity what did CBM do???

All the coaches at the end of summer break before they went back to work would go to Hood canal and have a party...and it was a clam bake. Started with Price.
Your explanation leaves a few details out, Like who Mary is, for starters

IIRC, it wasn't the Hood Canal (though nearby), but near my hometown, Shelton. I think it was at Bayshore.

Truer words have never been posted
Our bowl losses have been embarrassing. There is no parsing words or arguing with that fact. They came out listless and lifeless. This is ultimately a reflection of coaching after it happens several times. Yes, the D coaching a mess, but Leach has eyes. He isn't stupid. He allowed the team to go out and line up 3 on the LOS against the triple option. You have to assume that was their game plan all along, so he saw them practicing it for 3 weeks as well.

The Minnesota loss basically was a run back of every AC ever under Leach. The Holiday bowl the team got run out of the stadium because he stuck with falk until it was too late.

I mean, I am truly grateful to Leach for putting us in a position for future success, but lets not lionize the guy when there were clearly deficiencies that he continued to ignore.

IMHO, he showed his true feelings when he reiterated his stance on the recruiting - he got WSU as far as he could and wouldn't get them any further because (magically) UW (and everyone else) gets all the talent and he gets none. When he came to that conclusion is up for debate, but I would wager that it was about that same time he turned off the afterburners.

The only bowl loss I considered embarrassing was the 2016 Holiday bowl loss to Minnesota. WSU should have won that by a significant margin. The NM Bowl and Cheez It Bowl did not surprise me. The 2017 Holiday Bowl with Falk out, Martin and Johnson-Mack bailing, Matafa out of the first half, and Hilinski making his first start. Michigan State was good, and a bad match up.

It was time for Leach and WSU to part ways. Both entities needed a change. Has Chun hit a home run with Rolovich? Nobody really knows, but I’m looking forward to Rolo ball and see if Chun has it right. I’m excited to see what the RNS can do with a very talented offense this fall. More than that, I would love to see a defense that belongs in the PAC-12 talent wise. The Spring game is just around the corner!

I'm excited. I really like his offense and I know he will run the ball more...especially against 3 man fronts instead of calling stupid swing passes and screens running plays.

From what I've read, he is a tireless recruiter. He's young, energetic, and hungry. I think this was a home run by Chun...but time will tell.

The stats say about 2 more rushes per game, and very few passes. The RBs are going to touch the ball less of Rolovich keeps running the offense the same way.

Curiosity begs the question of whether access to elite rb talent will swing the play calling at all.

Not sure about that. I saw some stats that said they ran the ball quite a bit more. I didn't do a deep dive but I thought it was about 10 times more per game.

I do know that he will run the ball if they rush 3 and drop 8. I posted a video of him saying as much in another thread discussing the run and shoot offense.

He also said in the introduction that the main difference is he runs the ball more and passes less to the backs

He coached like a guy with no fire, zero hunger to win.

WSU is a grinders job. Spending 5 months a year in the Keys isnt grinding. It takes a team capable of winning 7 or 8 league games and makes it a 3 league game winner.

He either changes his tune or he gets run out of MSU inside 4 seasons. LSU, Ole Miss, A&M, Auburn, Alabama have zero issues putting 50+ on him.

If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.

Leach is done learning. If he refuses to adapt at MSU they will run his act out of town. He will finish at Florida International angry and blaming everyone else for what went wrong.

The total rushes were higher because the QB runs some. 2019 may not be the best year to look at because Borghi was getting almost all the reps, but I don't feel like looking up a bunch of stuff. For 2019 the top UH RB had 174 carries over 15 games, 11.6 carries per game. Borghi had 127 carries over 13 games, 9.8 carries per game.

I bet he lasts 3 season there. They will go apeshit if he tries throwing the ball 60 times when they drop 8 in coverage.

We'll see. I suspect the main difference would be more designed passes to the RB or at least having the RB leak out more often if the pass pro is holding up. The run and shoot RBs carry the ball and block. Borghi and McIntosh, and presumably Bazil and Buchanan have pass catching skills that can make a difference.
