I saw a bunch of Dems comment last week about having a strong bench. My first though was "Really? Who?" My second was...if they're so strong, why are they on the bench? You don't see a lot of schools bragging about the strength of their JV teams.
Kamala's biggest strength is that she's not Biden. That might reel in some of the undecideds who want to vote D, but don't want to vote Joe. I doubt there are huge numbers of those. She also might have the same effect on some women. I don't see that her advantages go further than that. Any other candidate also has the advantage of not being Biden, so that's not work a ton.
She's been a phantom for most of the last 4 years, so she doesn't have a lot of name recognition. Neither does any other Dem - Gavin Newsome is probably the next in line, but his isn't great either. You're going to have to go Bernie or Hilary to find another one with some strength in their name alone...and they've both been beaten already, and have faded into the background in the last 4-6 years.
Kamala is really what they have right now. Realistically, that probably means waving the white flag and trying to push someone for 2028.
Here's another wild idea though - and another one that isn't going to fly - put Kamala and RFK on the same ticket. Between the democratic faithful, the undecideds that swing to her, and the few percent that are following him, that might be just enough. That scenario would create a crazy and unpredictable 4 years...which would also be true if Trump was elected.

Edit - and I specifically mention immigration. I think that is the #1 issue that is hurting Biden, and the numbers don't lie here. So ok, point to the decline in crossings since your executive order. But pivot and say we need to get back to the table and get bipartisan legislation passed to strengthen it. Like we had until Trump got the R's to reject it so he could use it as a campaign issue.

There is a huge difference between asking a question and making a statement, and at that time (a time when there was very little actually known about the virus and how to treat it and protect from it), and the left constantly claims incorrectly that he recommended injecting bleach/disinfectants when the actual truth is that he was asking if there was any way to utilize a product that seemed to work on inanimate surfaces on the human body. As I have already said, the left twists his words to get a deceptive result in a sad attempt to make Trump look bad.
