Worst 7-1 team in the country?

this is the worst 4-4 team in the country.

There are 3 in the W column that are clearly not deserved, yet they somehow managed to get away with.

This team makes winning look way harder than it should week after week.

I pray to the lord Christ almighty and any other deities that we don't make a playoff and completely embarrass the school and the fanbase.

Yes. Take it. The kids are winning in spite of Dickfore, not because of him.

He should have been fired after his 2-7 league record last year.
As the winningest coach in WSU history after 4 seasons, why not fire him today? Imagine the press we’d get!

Praying for failure of the team because your ego can’t handle them winning seems like an odd flex.

Sorry Biggs…looks like one more week of coaching JV high school for you.

So if we are playing “down” to our competition, isn’t it reasonable to expect a heroic effort if we played Miami let’s say? Miami needed a miracle to beat a middling VT team BTW, none of these top 10 CFB teams are impervious to losing to a less talented team.

Do I think we “deserve” to be in the playoff the way we’re winning…hell no. But if the chips fall that way would sure be fun to see how the kids respond to that test, and with a talent like Mateer you always have a punchers chance. More fun than watching the Sun Bowl minus half our starters who are sitting out.

When I watch any professional team (in any sport) enough I see a lot of decisions that I question. I think Jake could use some risk/reward thinking after each game. But you know...I said the same about Mike Leach.

Football at WSU is never dull.

I love how Cuck90, charter member of the CotRW, stalks me to read all my posts. What a fcking loser. The ignore button should have 2 functions. The first is it removes the shitbags from your feed. The second is that it removes your posts from their feed.

The lengths these CotRW losers go to discredit anyone that says anything remotely critical about their Lord and Savior Jake Dickfore is lunacy.

What hymn is it this week losers? Don’t be selfish. Make sure you pivot the other direction in your circle jerk.

Unlike past Cougar teams, I'm hard-pressed to find ANY single thing this team gives me confidence in.

In years past we've had great secondaries or edge rushers or stout defensive lines or electric passing games or talented and explosive running backs. You knew there was at least one SINGLE thing you could count on each game.

This team...I got nothing so far. That's all I have to say about that.

7-1. Which means you are 1-7. And still working Saturdays coaching high school JV cuz you weren’t good enough. Only loser I see is you.

I’m sure you’re anxious to use the ignore function on yourself.

But it’s all bad coaching. Don’t you read these threads?

7-1

Suck on that, loser

They win close games. Thats one thing. Ive been critical of the coaching staff ability to coach certain things but these guys dont quit. I will give credit where credit is due. These players have definitely “ bought in” and the coaches do get some credit there on the motivation front.

Testy this morning aren't we? Since I could not get the game on TV or streaming and was tired I went to bed. Woke up this morning and hey the Cougs pulled out a close one!

Can anyone tell me how many times Mateer got sacked and for what yardage? 20 carries (more than everyone else combined?) for only 42 yards seems a bit wacky. Also, 26,937 fans in their 35,000 seat stadium? That's pretty lame IMHO.

And how bad was the field surface? I read that it sucked doggy dicks.

I only caught the 4th quarter but the stadium looked less than half full from what I saw.

The field looked like they were going to have a beach volleyball tournament there today.

This team has won 3-4 games this year simply by having better athletes whos explosive plays save the day. Arbuckle is very hot and cold, but at least has some hot streaks. Hes 29. I’m up in the air on him, but it’s been mostly bad for the personnel we have. He needs help but is learning somewhat.

Schmeddings defense is baby poop soft. And if we can’t tackle, it’s time to fire guys.

Dickert needs to get some outside counsel on coordinator hires. I know firing in season isn’t really a thing for us, but man does Schmedding deserve it. And Arbuckle needs to be on an improvement plan or F.O.

Happy to be 7-1, but not gonna convince me we are even at 50% of what this team could do as far as clean, complimentary football.

No. Your girlfriend @AD won’t post the full box score. Doesn’t seem to want to support wsucougars.com at all, actually. Must be planning something bigger, better. Can’t wait to see it.

1 sack was the total.

Game was easy to find on tv. There’s a thread about what channel Loyal fans were using to watch the game last night.

This team finds ways to win and has the confidence that they are never out of games. There was a fairly recent UW team like that (I don’t remember what year) but that kind of mindset can lead to a lot of wins.

They were basically playing in the worlds largest litter box from what I could gather.

The fact that you can’t grow a decent patch of grass in San Diego of all places doesn’t look great on that institution.

Biggs, I’m sure groundskeeping is part of your JV football responsibilities, maybe there’s a GA opening at SDS 🤷

One of Dickert’s main talking points is being consistent and playing to the best of your ability every down. I think his players do that more than his coaches. If he holds those tenets dear, there has to be some hard convos and performance standards going forward at a minimum.

One of the biggest challenges of coaching 19 year old kids is coaching 19 year old kids. I have a high level of confidence 90% of the coaching points this week will be focused on the stupid shit they did. I’m also quite confident he’s not coaching the team to muff punts and get stupid PF penalties. For the most part they played hard and with a lot of energy last night. The lines were both mediocre and unimpressive for most of the night with the exception of the one kid who had 3 sacks. Need to be better in the trenches. Better offensive play calling would help the O line immensely.

Agree. The mistakes to me seem to relate to a lack of focus. We seem to be much less reliable on the road, for whatever reason.

The worst 7-1 team? It would be between WSU and Memphis, which I would give the nod as the better team to WSU, as our schedule has been harder. Kansas State would barely be above us, and SMU slightly above them.

#22 in both polls. If we can continue to get wins, we should be in the Top 15 going into the bowl gams. A lot of outlets are saying that we will play KSU in the Alamo Bowl.
KSU had a tough time yesterday at home against a bad Kansas team. Like us, they had to come back in the 4th quarter.

Congrats, Cougs, on being 7-1. This year Wazzu is the torch bearer for the PAC-12.

Last year it was the Beavers turn to be the PAC-12's torch bearer. We were doing great until Jonathan Smith got distracted with looking for other coaching opportunities.

We Beavers will gladly trade you Jonathan Smith for Dickert.

It's great to see both Washington State and Boise State doing so well this year. After Chris Petersen left Boise State, I was afraid the Broncos had lost their football 'mojo'. The 6-1 & 7-1 records by the two schools should help the rebuilt PAC-12 with getting a good TV contract.

Both Cougars and Broncos should win out.

Well done, Cougars. Well done, Broncos.

I glanced down the above posts, going quickly past those more interested in name calling than offering actual thoughts. Here is where I land, for the one or two of you who care:

- Our punting has been outstanding when you consider that a placekicker is doing it. And the place kick game has also been good.
- There is no denying that we are winning close games. That alone is such an improvement over last year!!
- The difference between attitude of the offense with Mateer vs. Ward is shocking to me. I'll take Mateer, warts and all. Better leader.
- If I could make only one change in our D it would be continuous review of tackling fundamentals. If I could make 2 changes, I'd ban the soft/ prevent defense.
- There is no doubt that our coaches can develop players. The recruiting stars have always been somewhat of a joke, but to be 7-1 with so many starters that were walk ons/unrated/minimal P4 offers is significant.
- That said, the tackling fundamental thing (while improving slowly) is still an issue.
- We held most of the team together last season with minimal NIL money. That makes it clear that the players believed this was going to be a good season, with a good coaching staff.
- Our staff clearly favors aggressive play calling. I'd rather have that than be fully predictable. But we are probably a bit too far into the aggressive side of things at this moment, at least when looking at the risk/reward situation. Still, no one can accuse us of not using all of the playbook, or of not leaving it all on the field.

Bottom line? We are 7-1. It has not been pretty, mistakes have been made, it took several opportune (lucky) breaks, and we may really be (as the thread title suggests) the worst 7-1 team in the country. But don't tell the team, because they won't believe you. And that reflects well on the coaching staff.

Agree with a lot here. muffed punts aren’t generally a coaching issue, I’d throw that in the “unlucky” category. We’ve had our fair share of shit luck over the years I’m ok having some good luck roll our way.

There’s plenty to clean up and get better at I think we can all agree. There’s still some questionable stuff in regards to offensive play calling and in game decisions (did not like going for it on fourth when you’re in a defensive game), but some of the nonstop hate for Dickert when we are a top 25 team in November after all the shit we’ve had to wade through over the past few years is insane to me.
