WSU vs SDSU game thread

I still remember being in husky stadium where Gardner Minshew had an easy first down but slid feet first where it cost him the first down and it was a turnover.
Yup thought about the same thing. When it’s 3rd or 4th down and game is on the line you’ve gotta go head first. Weird for a guy who seemingly never slides to do it there.

Gardner Minshew never played in husky stadium
Must have been Martin then. I was drunk and when you have been to as many games as I have been, they begin to bleed into each other. Or, I have dementia.

Depends on the personnel. Bump the receivers. Drop a DE into coverage. Take away the inside route and force the receiver outside. You know, what coaches should know. An old, washed up football official can see solutions. The point is that with how quickly the QB gets the ball out, we can’t get to him unless we force longer routes.

But then again, I’m not so sure we can stop them. We are out of position, too slow, too unprepared. If we take away the slant they shift to quick out routes which we probably can’t cover either.
Ugh... yes drop a DE into coverage. They did. They sent linebackers to try and get pressure on the QB. They would throw the slant behind them .

You have a problem with our corners ?

Do you believe UW pissed and moaned when they were 12-0 and they were lucky in four of those wins that they played "down".

Texas play down to Vandy? There are tons of games where the better team went on the road and struggled to win, even against less talented teams.

Ugly game. But I’ll take the W. My comments and doubts about Arbuckle still stand. We are darn lucky that Mateer basically played a Houdini act and turned a sure sack into a decent gain and first down which later led to the go-ahead touchdown.
I do like this group of players. They don’t quit.

And Buddah sat on the route finally. For once he was in the right place to make a play.

Slants and quick outs are antidotes to blitzes. Sending LBs doesn’t help when the balll is out quick.

Yes! They have their backs to the ball, struggle to keep up, and make bad reads. Watch them. Any quality receiver corp will embarrass them.

If you think the talent and skill gap between UT and Vamdy or UW and their close games last year are comparable to us and SDSU, then I get your point. I don’t agree.

And every time a top 10 team struggles against a bottom dweller, they are playing down.

This coaching staffs play calling inside the 5 is piss poor. Try using some mis-direction some time. WSU is not a power running team. Maybe get the wideouts wide to open up more space. Unhappy with that aspect of the game. That said, it’s nice to win ugly.

For my part I am happy we won. Yes I support the team and want them to win. I can do that AND criticize their play at the same time. Maybe my expectations are too high (clearly they are for many of you), but that doesn’t mean I hate them.

7-1. Hard to win on the road. Field was absolute trash.

It wasn’t pretty at times but, it’s shaping up to be a better season than most on the Palouse.

Good time for a bye.

You hit the nail, (Page 1 of this thread):

"Cougs playing down to the competition. Our victory will come down to depth, not skill. Edit: Or motivation, as in we look uninspired, unmotivated, or as my son says, “mid.”"

Dummying down to the competition. Agreed. We see it all the time. Kids are human, then the opposing team wins when they want it more. Not the case last night. Despite that we "dummied down", our guys still found a way to win.

It was a good effort in the comeback, but I've lost faith in Arbuckle overall. I don't know if it's him or Dickert making aggressive calls when they don't make sense....and then being predictable at other times, but it's frustrating to see the coaches make bad decisions that keep games closer than they should be. And if I can guess that a QB run is coming 3/4 of the time.....coaches that are paid to recognize that shit are definitely keying in on it.

Depending on how this season finishes out, I think that there should be some real soul searching in the OC department. Arbuckle obviously has some good moments but this team feels like it's underperforming on offense overall.

Of course, defensively, I don't even know what to say. We can't seem to play defense at all until we are sitting there with our feet on the goal line and then we suddenly have a Top 25 defense. It's frickin' bonkers.

We should still finish 11-1 and no matter the competition, that's still great....but this game should stop the CFP talk. My hope is that we end up #10 after a nice non-CFP bowl win....even if I know that we don't really have a Top 10 team.

Cougs are 7-1 and outperforming YOUR pre-season expectations. Yet here you are tearing them down based on your sensitive feelings.

How about supporting the team as they try and reach 8-1, a level of achievement rarely found in Washington State University history?

If you can’t handle the ups and downs of a college football season, perhaps there are other activities more in line with your emotional capacity.

I would 100% disagree on uninspired or unmotivated. I didn’t see that at all. Definitely some discipline issues and boneheaded mistakes but they played hard all night.

Like squatching!

The MWC is a competitive league. Fresno State waxed San Jose St. last night. Hawaii blew out Nevada. UNLV almost upset Boise State. Teams are leveling off. If you don’t play well, you can lose. The Beavs got handled by Cal, but they’ll be a tough opponent for us in Corvallis.
I disagree about Oregon St.

Oregon St. is Oregon St.

For every team we’ve played this year sans TTech and UW, WSU has been Goliath. WSU fans should understand that concept better than most.

Drunk and demented is no way to go through life son. I never understood the lure of the bottle to some people. Just doesn't appeal to me.

Fixed your post.

Mateer mouthing off to Dickert after the game is somewhat concerning.
I missed this. Dickert gave Mateer an earful for “sliding” which he absolutely deserved. I wouldn’t jump to conclusions though, two alpha competitors getting hot during/after a stressful game is normal stuff. They’ll be fine.

Dickert chewing out his kicker for trying to rough up the dude who roughed him was damn good comedy considering the result of that whole fiasco

probably not a huge deal, but would a QB have ever said that to Mike Leach, especially with that tone?

Found it. Pretty benign IMO. Mateer didn’t like Dickert hollering at him for his slide. Tough breaks dude he’s the coach you’re the player.

They’ll be fine, this stuff is part of football.

I don’t see anything there
There’s very little. Mateer isnt getting benched and he isn’t entering the transfer portal. And he’ll probably laugh it off when a reporter asks him about it.

Two competitive guys being…competitive.

Well.....Suudy...yes their corners will have their back to the ball. On a 9 route, QB's have really developed the ability to drop the ball down the shute or throw it to the back shoulder. Receivers also have learned to put their hands up at the very last moment so corners don't turn anymore. They are taught the moment hands go up swipe down. So you are saying Hall, Colson, and Ethan O are slow? How many times has Hall even been targeted? Colson excelled against Rome Odunze in last years Apple Cup. Was that a fluke?

You also understand that SDSU have checks, so if the Qb either sees blitz or anticipates it they will check to "counter" what WSU is doing. That is why the completed passes. But later in the game WSU made even further adjustments and slowed down those throws.

When has WSU not had a middle to top of the Mountain West talent wise. ...they have always been Mountain West talent. So what you are saying when in the Pac 12 all other teams played down to our level.

I can answer that...

"F*ck them... they were soft Hollywood players in a Hollywood conference".

That's 1 thing I will say about fuw, Fusc, Fwhoregon...

They weren't soft.

They cheated, but they weren't soft.

Unless then there was cold snow. Then they 4 ft wide vaginas

Hard to make out, but Mateer said something about “yelling at my ass.”
After the exchange Dickert said "who?", then started talking to the guy in the suit. Kinda looks to me like someone else was yelling at Mateer's ass, not Dickert.

And to the Mateer slide thing - he wasn't sliding at all IMHO. The refs gave him a BS spot on that one.

Dickert was literally smiling at John when he said that. There is a photo from Cougfan during that exchange and he’s laughing. Seems like they were joking around. Then Dickert gets some injury news from Tingstad.
