There have been difficult times in the past and certainly the Great Depression was more difficult economically. The McCarthy era bullsh!t was also a pretty dark time in our country.
That said, the anger and division in our country is greater than anything I've seen in the 50+ years that I've been here and although it's unlikely to happen, this feels like the closest to an outright Civil War in our country since the last real one. Our status in the world is collapsing and we are abandoning whatever feeble moral high ground that we used to have.
As a Kansan who saw how devastating it is to an economy to gut government spending just for the sake of cutting it, I am deeply worried about the inevitable recession that will be kicking into high gear shortly. Millions of people are going to lose their jobs in the next couple years if Trump and Musk continue with their plans. I fully expect my brother to be dead by the end of next year after he gets cut loose from Medicaid as part of "improving government efficiency". My company has already been told that tens of millions of dollars of work in Texas is going to be canceled.
Tens of millions of 2024 Trump voters are going to be regretting their decision, even if the truth is that Kamala might have been just as much of a Greek tragedy as Trump has been. The bright side for the democrats is that they are almost guaranteed to take over the house and senate in the near future.....if Trump and the GOP hasn't just thrown our whole election process out.
It boggles the mind that 75 million Americans are excited to support a man who is helping Communist Russia ahead of our allies, is willing to commit war crimes in Gaza to make resorts for his wealthy friends, is destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people to save 2% in government spending while giving his rich friends $4 trillion in tax cuts over the next several years. A man who is willing to destroy public education to promote the interests of private religious schools that will lead to an even steeper decline in the quality of education for most of our country's youth. Of course, if the Democrats didn't suck so bad, we wouldn't be seeing this happen, so it's their own damned fault that we are where we are.
