Basketball trivia

Hmm on brand X everybody s village er person showed a poll which "just for fun" put the cougs in 8th place. I in my preseason predictions have the cougs in the 7th spot with an eye on 6th place.. i guess that my rose covered glasses are pretty crimson.

We just need to worry about improving on an individual basis and as an overall team. We are pretty young but I really believe the overall talent has potentially dramatically improved. With another good recruiting cycle we could start to get into the conversation for the Tournament.

It all starts on an individual basis. Then the coaches need to build them into a team which plays well together. I cannot remember who said" :the future is now" In basketball two or three players can turn a program around. I guess the question is whether or these players are on the 2017-2018 squad...

Another thing i like about this year s team is the ability to go either small or big. The past two years they suffered from a severe lack of depth How good the "small" and "big teams" are remains to be seen

I think there will be times when we put out a good lineup with nobody over 6-8. With a big guard like Gittens available at the 3 you have a pretty decent lineup even without the true big on the floor.

The Washington Supreme Prep basketball team with 7'4 coug target ,Riley Sorn ,should be wrapping up play in Las Vegas i do not know how they fared. They have been competitive in all the AAU tournaments so far..

Two deep projection for team

C Franks Cooper
PF Bernsteine Pollard
SF Gittens Chidom
SG Hinson Ergas
PG Flynn Aquaah

I am sure avabob will not like Daniels being left out. Likewise Langston is not there. I see these two possibly leaving for more playing time after the season. The coaches will have time to see which players work out. I can see Franks also coming off the bench if Pollard earns starting minutes.' Likewise Chidom can play the three or a stretch four. We may see Gittens at the SG if they decide to go big.

Franks isn't a center but I could see the starters ending up that way. How the wings spots play out is tough to predict. I think Hinson is being forgotten for some reason but will start. Even JC experience is important and he comes from a good one. I expect Cooper to play more than people project as well.

PG: Flynn/Acquaah
SG: Acquaah/Daniels/Hinson
SF: Hinson/Gittens/Ergas/Chidom
PF: Franks/Bernstine/Chidom
C: Cooper/Pollard

Haven't even seen clips if the new guys except for Gittens so my opinion is clearly influenced by the guys I have seen. We appear to be more athletic down through at least 10 spots. When all is said and done I think the guys who shoot the ball the best get the most minutes. Hinson sounds like a shooter and I agree he may be getting over looked. I like Franks because I think he will be our best shooting big, and I also think his rebounding will surprise. As for Daniels, if Acquaah, Ergas end up better, great for the team. I just see some continued upside for him.

There's not a lot of highlights of Hinson. The priority for Hinson is that his offense translates to the Pac 12 especially 3-point shooting. His release is a bit long. He appears to be a good athlete.

Hinson shot just 30% from the 3 pt line in conference games at Tyler JC so hopefully he improves on that. He was a very strong inside scorer, also a good rebounder as a guard. Actually out rebounded the 6-11 Cooper in fact. I could see Hinson and Gittens sharing time at the 3.

Also regarding Franks, he is the only big who can step out and knock down a jumper - something that Kent really likes to have. I don't think Pollard, Cooper and Bernstine have shown that ability and I have no idea about Chidom.

I did not think that Hinson is as thick as he is I have seen him listed at anywhere from 180-225 pds.He is a lot closer to 225 than 180 pds.. The fact that both Gittens and Hinson are thick bodies bodes well for a "small" lineup Gittens averred over 5 assts per game and can shoot the three..Chidom also is good passer and can shoot the three.I put Franks at"C" but should have actually written down PF for both inside positions. The only true center may be Cooper who should offer rim protection. The cougs have not had a rim protector for two years now.

I predict
1. Flynn, Acquaah, Mickelson
2. Acquaah, Daniels, Hinson, Ergas
3. Hinson, Gittens, could swap by PAC 12
4. Franks, Bernstein, Chidom
5. Pollard, Bernstein, Cooper

I'm not set in stone on any of this, other than I'm pretty confident on Flynn and Acquaah being the starting guards. A ton of question marks on this team and a ton of minutes to be earned by potentially many deferent players. Makes for good discussion and adds to the early season excitement.

I was surprised how thick Hinson is as well. Also, Chidum does have a nice outside stroke, but as others point out to me Franks didn't get a lot to drop for him with an equally nice looking stroke. I really like the look of Chidum but I think his best basketball may be a little further down the road than the guards.

I really like Gittens. If the coaches can reach him and he listens, he will surprise a lot of people. He did not make all the top 100 lists but that had to do with an early attitude not talent. He had great stats and he is a team player. He needs to realize that coaching is not criticism. I saw a lot of top 100 4 star players and he has more raw talent than most of them.We will see if other players like Chidom, Ergas, and Acquaah have developed. The team also needs Flynn to become more consistent .... ie 3 pt shooting during the whole season. It will be an interesting season. I also sense a lot more optimism than during the past two seasons.

Riley Battin a 6'9 240 4 star PF has been off erred by the cougs. He is a 4 star California HS player 2018

i just watched his tapes. He is a big fairly athletic big man. He shoots 87% FTs ,52 % from 3 pt land. He averaged 24.3 pts and 12.7 rbs last year. He runs the court well uses either hand inside, knows how to use his big body, and is fair defensively. He is a good passer and can create his own shot He looks like a" Duke"type of big man if i must say. He is also an aggressive big man, is vocal ,and physical on the court. He has offers from Clemson Northwestern and the cougs. He will probably get more offers as he is tearing it up this summer.

Battin is according to his AAU coach Silver a late bloomer. He should give us a look I would think.

All of this posting in one thread sure makes things hard to follow.

It looks like UTAH has been on Battin since December 1216.He is said to have a great work ethic.Maybe he is a potential poor man s Kevin Love with his outside/inside game? The cougs would be fortunate to obtain his services.I think that his best basketball is ahead of him

Amazing to me the quality of talent we are offering over the last 3 months compared to prior years. Even if we strike out out on most we will get a couple pretty soon.

I agree and the new coaching staff is to be credited I was always baffled why Kent did not complete the job and hire a whole new staff with a different mind set. The previous staff seemed to have a low bar when it came to recruiting. The previous coach was a D11 talent and he recruited the same type of players.Your primary recruiter sets the tone and is the first face of the program. Now the program is aiming for a different breed of cat, hopefully they will snare a couple of top ready to play players.Kent had to become more actively involved instead of being the closer. Perhaps that is why they landed Gittens Now his coaches seem to be looking and approaching the more talented players

The Washington Supreme summer AAU team went 7-0 in Las Vegas . I do not know who they played and what classification they played in.One wonders if the 7'4 Riley Sorn improved his stock?

The WSU cougs will take on the St Joesph s Hawks on Sept 23 in the Wooden Legacy Tournament. Too bad i wanted them to beat up on SDSU.

2018 wunderkind 6'11 Marvin Bagley looks like he will reclassify to 2017. He just cancelled his visit to Arizona which does not have any scholarships left He will instead visit UCLA today which has one scholarship available for 2017, The same for USC and Duke . It looks like it boils down to these three power house programs The winner may become not only the PAC 12 favorite but a huge boost to national title aspirations. The PAC 12 may become stronger.

Kenyon Martin said this morning on Cowherd that the Lavar Ball circus relative to UCLA could impact their recruiting. Said he would be concerned if his son, a high D-1 recruit, was interested in UCLA.

I truly do not like Alford so i hope that is true,However he has one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

The AAU summer season has come to an end. Recruitment should start to pick up and recruits may start to make visits . Of course Riley Sorn is a target as well as a couple of other players from the Seattle and Pudget sound area. The cougs need a couple of big men and a S forward for next years class.

Morris Udeze, who was offered early by the coug s, recruitment has blown up The 6'8 240 pd juco PF has now been offered by LSU,Wichita State,St Johns, TCU,Illinois, Butler,Ohio State and others.. He is now a 4 star recruit. Somehow ,i do not see it the same way ,coaches now do. He is a good player but there are other players being recruited who seem to be better players. It seems like the cougs are in very tough competition for the players they are after. They have offered at least 20 players and i hope that they can win about 3 of these battles.

The cougs are talking to 6'7 shooting guard Rip Econumu. He is a three star player who recently averaged 21 pts in a tournament. He has 10 D 1 offers but UTEP is only one really in the mix.The cougs have not offered yet .He seems to be a smart, fairly athletic guard who may be more suited for a mid major college

Solid player. Maybe a "plan B" guy?

I don't think we gave had this many known offers out since the Raveling days. Of course the information wasn't this widely available during the Sampson days but I don't think any staff since would be that active.

Sorry avabob, 6'9 Riley Battin has trimmed his list to six and the cougs did not make the cut.

Oh well. Not like I haven't gotten use to it over the past 40 years. I remember the year I got out of college, Harshman and Heatcote were recruiting this 6-11 kid from Kalispell really hard. Lost him to Montana State of all places. Raveling got Moses Malone to campus. Not much chance there. Rav also lost on A C green, Charlie Sutton and Brian Welch.

Active is a step in the right direction. Getting visits is the next step. Maybe it doesn't happen this cycle but at least we are moving in a more productive direction.

Didn't know about Malone. Wow! Malone seems to get somewhat lost in the shuffle of center greats but he was a great one in my book.

I actually attended a Saturday workout in Bohler when Malone was there. Didn't know who he was , but watched him manhandle our post players for about 20 minutes. I asked Raveling who he was. Name didn't mean anything to me. I think he visited a bunch of schools, but was destined to go straight to the old ABA.

Moses Malone was one of the most celebrated HS basketball players of all time. New Mexico s assistant coach rented a hotel room for a year in Malone s hometown in an intense effort to recruit him. He eventually committed to Maryland and then went pro to the ABA.
