**** Dickert. And **** him for giving Schmedding a mile leash. The last two weeks have sneakily been Wulff era coaching performances. Ready for DC to get fired, but if thats not that case, Dickert can **** off himself.
I don't invoke the name of he who shall not be mentioned lightly, but that defense was truly Wulffian. Getting blown off the line, standing around and looking at the play.
We beat two P4 teams earlier in the season - this is in the locker room and between the ears. Someone needs to go and bring in a coach that can at least get maximum effort out of these guys.
I watched two total possessions before turning it off.
The team wasn't prepared and the talent drop off is already showing, it was two low-G5 teams playing against each other.
As soon as the Playoff was officially of the picture with the second loss (not that it was going to happen even with one-loss), it was an opportunity to see in the upcoming few weeks will show if the team has given up or has fight. So far it's leaning to the former.

I don’t think “regressed” is the right word to describe our defense this season. I was surprised how effective they were in the first few games. I didn’t expect a lot from them coming into the season, but they’re now failing to meet my early low expectations. They’ve forgotten all fundamentals, and have such low on-field awareness that they consistently lose track of the opponent’s only decent receiver. There are - quite literally - FCS defenses that are better than ours.
Offense is only in marginally better shape. While they didn’t pull their typical 3rd quarter disappearing act, we did continue some other disturbing trends:
- we’re completely predictable with Mateer runs, especially in short yardage situations
- we forgot we had a running back for the 2nd half. He was averaging over 5 yards a carry…probably should stop using him.
- we can’t block
In two weeks we’ve gone from a mathematical shot at a CFP berth to maybe we can get the Vegas bowl. Honestly, I don’t think this team deserves a bowl, and if they’re matched up with a team that’s even decent, they’ll probably be embarrassed.

There was a point in the 2nd half where the announcers were gushing about what a great game it was, and how this proved these teams belong in P4 and it was ridiculous that they were left out.
I almost laughed out loud. What we saw last night just about confirmed the choice to leave them out. Neither team is very good, neither plays much defense, and neither could control the game. In the old Pac-12, neither of these teams goes to a bowl.
This game was worse than NM IMHO. Woke up this morning going "did that really happen?". The defense mystifies me. Granted, uw sucks this year, but hell they did beat Michigan (which sucks too but still). How the F did we limit them to 19 points with this defense? The secondary, aside from the pick 6, was out of sorts the whole game and made another mediocre QB look like a Heisman candidate. The D-line? We could have rushed 10 and still gotten no pressure on the QB.
Just very disappointed. Especially with the slew of defeats among top 25 teams. Win these two games, both of which shoud have been easy victories, and we are 10-1 and probably approaching the top 16 (undeservedly so, but you know how it works).
Edit - and how can a team that scored 20 points COMBINED in the last 3 games ring up 41 on us?

The d plays scared. Either Schmeddling is berating them to the point of paralysis from fear of screwing up, or he's installing defenses too complex for their skill level. Or both.
The DL has the disadvatantage of being small and weak, and it has shown all year at the LOS. Somehow they schemed around it for 8 games, but those chickens have come home to roost.
Secondary looks confused most of the time, releasing WRs to help that isn't there. I'm guessing the pick 6 was a freelance play, as Schmeddling I'm sure wanted him to go sit in a zone and wait for the play to come to them.
Overall a poor showing, yet I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Dickert and Schmeddling are praising them for the coupe of positive plays. If you don't know you suck, you can't get better.

They struggle to line up correctly and whatever communication is supposed to be taking place is glacially slow. Couple that with marginal talent.
The QB sneaks were gimmes. Maybe the most pathetic. Along with that play where the DB pointed at the recover running free while everyone stood and watched.
Wasn’t a surprising result. We should have at least 2 more losses this season. Our defense doesn’t have any difference makers.

Dammitall, that was disgusting! Several good points already made in this thread, and I won't rehash those, but would like to bring up two things absolutely drive me insane watching games. The first one is dead ball LOS fouls. OL forgetting the snap count and DL jumping before the ball moved make me scream. Come on, how simple is the concept-never move before the ball moves! Pay effing attention!
The other one is getting unsportsmanship fouls, in particular immediately after scoring. This can come from celebrating, taunting, and other acts, but this is something that the players should never, never, EVER get called on them! So yesterday the Cougs scored with 1:04 left before halftime to take the lead at 17-14. I just about crapped my pants when the announced after the play that Pole was hit with a 15 yard penalty. Believe me or not, right there I immediately got a sinking feeling in my gut that we would lose the game. You do shit like that and just piss away momentum and give the opposition more hope that they should have, because you just know they will have good field position after the kickoff. Sure enough they start at their 40 yard line instead of around the 20, gash us for 2 quick chunk plays and then score with 13 seconds left in the first half. I was so pissed right then, I was just thinking how that single dumbass penalty there could have cost the Cougs the game. Now, it may be tough to blame the loss entirely on that penalty, but it sure as heck was a major contributing factor, and it was something that was entirely unnecessary. And yet that type of thing has happened over and over the past few years. Maybe Dickert should have him running stairs for 24 hours straight and then he would remember to not ever do that again?
I don't remember the TV crew talking about what actually happened. Did anyone hear that talked about on the radio feed or the post game "call-in" show?
Another indicator of lack of discipline are the fouls you mentioned. It's getting worse, not better.

With all the horseshit that is being done on celebrations, that got flagged? That is some pure BS right there. Probably a rule, but hot damn that is stupid. Of course, doing it was even dumber.
One of the more mind numbing moments was late in the game where OSU threw a pass across the middle. I think O'Connor was in coverage and he was completely oblivious to the receiver crossing and as the ball was reaching the receiver, he was like, "Oh Sh!t...there's a guy here!". I know he's a redshirt freshman but hot damn.....he didn't have a fuggin' clue.
Thanks for the response. That is even worse than I thought. I had figured it was some taunting reaction to an OSU player, but every player on the team KNOWS that that is a penalty. You just cannot do that!
I'm cool with further penalizing the taunting and celebrating and all that. Wish the F-ing NFL would crack down on all the theatrics as well. Spike the ball after a TD? Fine. High five your teammates on the way back to the huddle or sidelines? Fine. Have half the team in the endzone doing some pre-planned circus show? NO.
Back to Cougs/College FB. I really love it when our defensive players who are getting torched all game manage to make a good play and act like they just won the Heisman. Just get back in the huddle.
Agree with all that! Hey, I readily admit I am old school on a lot of things related to sports. I liked it before there were playoffs and the bowl games were the big prizes.
All that celebrating and in your face crap turns me off. I forget who it was that made a famous and wise comment- "Act like you have been there before". Score and then just go about your business, follow the examples of guys like Steve Largent, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith. Play the game, compete hard, and do it all with class!
And what motivates or de-motivates the other player more? In your face celebration (aka really piss you off), or a simple flip to the ref like yeah, nice try dude, see you again in the end zone?
Not really related but reminded me of our Db's. Anyone else see the Dallas TD where the TE runs wide open down the middle and 3 Washington DB's are standing around covering - no one? Go to the 3:05 mark in the video below. Although the clip doesn't quite give you the full view of the hapless Db's. In game replay did.
I was initially amused when Leaf and the other guy were asking "how do you lose track of their best receiver?"
Later, it started getting annoying, when they kept coming back to it. "How does their best receiver end up uncovered?" "How do you not cover a guy with 70+ receptions?" "How do you not cover the guy who has 11 catches?" "Nobody else on the team even has 20 catches, how do you not cover him?"
Things like that, it's hard to even blame on scheme and game plan. It's really just lack of awareness and not understanding what your job is.
Really, our defense right now reminds me of the ASU defense in 2011. Remember when a freshman Connor Halliday came in and torched them for almost 500 yards? I think it was the end of Ericksen's tenure at ASU, and it was pretty clear that the defense had quit. They were going through the motions and not really making much effort to play the game. That's what our defense has looked like the last couple of weeks - their heads just aren't in the game.
