PULLMAN — Washington State still doesn’t have a full picture of what its 2024 football season will look like. The Cougars are almost there, though.

Pac-12 holdovers WSU and Oregon State have reached a schedule agreement with the Mountain West Conference for next season, Washington State announced Friday, striking a deal that will provide each school six games against Mountain West teams, three home and three away.

The Cougars’ 2024 season has those six games lined up, plus the four already announced: Home against Portland State on Aug. 31, at San Diego State on Sept. 7, against Washington at Lumen Field on Sept. 14 and home against San Jose State on Sept. 21.

That leaves two open slots for games. WSU will announce its full 2024 schedule “in the near future,” according to Friday’s news release.

This agreement, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports, is expected to include a fee of roughly $14 million paid to Mountain West schools, and for now it is football-only. WSU and OSU will not be eligible for the Mountain West championship, according to the report.

Neither school is locked into a contractual agreement to make this a long-term arrangement, per Yahoo! Sports, but there is “intent and understanding” of full-time membership — or a merger — for WSU and OSU.

The Cougars and Beavers are expected to negotiate broadcasting agreements that are separate from those of Mountain West teams, who are partnered with Fox and CBS Sports Network.

With the transfer portal opening Monday, this comes at a key time for Washington State, which has already lost five players to the portal — including top receiver Josh Kelly, who entered Thursday. Quarterback Cam Ward is expected to field NIL offers around $1 million each, according to multiple reports, and top cornerback Chau Smith-Wade, who according to a source with direct knowledge turned down a big NIL payday from Michigan last offseason, should have similar options.

Good find M.I ... Thanks.

What are you hearing on the WSU/OSU plan for basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, softball, etc, etc?

Should we expect the "P-2" to hash out a similar arrangement with the MWC or might the Cougs and Beavs look to be join up as a temporary Olympic sports member with one of the other conferences out west?

Appreciate the cut and paste, since I can't access the S-R online since I told them to pound sand over their poor coverages, high prices, and erratic delivery. Along with eliminating the Saturday edition.

I have no idea.

Is San Jose state considered one of the 6? If so we would need 3 more games.

There was a Yahoo Sports article some time back that mentioned the Pac2 and MWC discussing a Men's and Women's basketball scheduling arrangement but nothing mentioned on the other sports. I think the basketball discussion will heat up now that the football arrangement is complete.

I believe that it has been reported elsewhere that previously scheduled MW games would still be played and that this scheduling agreement of six games would be in addition to the scheduled games.

8 MWC games next year...is something.

8 MWC
1 FCS (PSU)
OSU
UW
TTU is rumored?

...only 3 P5 teams? Yikes.

Still to finalize: all the other team schedules for WSU. It is not shaping up great for the "we're going to still feel like a P5 argument" on the recruiting trail.

EDIT: "FSC" to "FCS"

Please let the Cougs play in Vegas. I'm there if it happens!

There is an NCAA Exception rule that will allow a 13th game if you play Hawaii in Hawaii. Perhaps if you travel to Hawaii you could schedule another P5 game.

You think that schedule is bad? Looks pretty good to me, especially given the circumstances.

"there is “intent and understanding” of full-time membership — or a merger — for WSU and OSU"

How long is it going to take the 10 turncoats to say that this means we're leaving the conference too, and that we should sacrifice our shares?

I am not a lawyer, but you would think if WSU has to pay $14m to play these games due to the conference implosion that WSU could show damages against the departing schools.

That's ONLY for 1,2 years. After that WSU could either rebuild PAC with BEST G5's from MWC, AAC, or join a ACC without FSU, Clemson, etc.

Also WSU can MAKE WHERE THEY ARE AT THE BIG TIME, and be a PROFESSIONAL, BEST DOUBLE AA, MINOR LEAGUE FARM TEAM, that does to FCS, Sun Belt, MAAC, etc, what the P4, Blue Bloods do, will do to WSU.

WSU can offer those FCS, Sun Belt, MAAC, etc, Transfer Portal, 2.5 star, 3 star, 3.5 star, lowest ended 4 star HS recruits, JC transfers, etc:

More immediate playing time, starting time, star time, etc.

A big juicy NIL PAYDAY at Bama types, when done at WSU, A good shot at NFL in addition to Big NIL PAYDAY at Bama types when done at WSU.

SUPERIOR DEVELOPMENT, COACHING

For QB's, WR's, WSU being QB U, WR U, Arbuckle Air Raid, the Mike Leach Line of "Lead the nation in Passing yards, Receiving yards, TD's at WSU.

12-0,11-1, 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, 7-5(at ultimate extreme worst vs G5 schedule, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, being in 12 team CFP playoff, etc.

Dickert Arbuckle, etc, can recruit good at WSU IF THEY SELL THESE THINGS, and EMBRACE, be a Pro Double AA MINOR LEAGUE FARM TEAM that does to FCS, Sun Belt, MAAC, etc, what the BLUE Bloods do to WSU recruiting wise, Transfer Portal, on the field, etc.

The only question is will WSU, Dickert, Arbuckle, Chun, WSU fans, etc, do that?

1-2 years? No, that is more than likely the schedule going forward forever.

Disagree. TTU OSU UW Boise St. SDSU, UNLV, Air Force, Wyoming, Fresno St. These are all teams that have been or are in/at top 25 level in last year or two. CSU is rising. It’s not Pac12 but it is certainly a schedule that will be challenging and with worthy opponents.

That’s sorta the problem. With roster turnover because of all of this, we could have a shitty record with a schedule that most of the country will look at as “Soft”. And these teams are good enough I doubt we blow through all of them even under the best of circumstances going forward.

I guess in order to avoid criticism we’d better win.

it’s up to our fans to determine how good this will be. If we sell 30K tickets to 3 Pullman games/year, it’ll feel the same as it always had.

Playing Arizona, Cal, Colorado, and ASU didn’t exactly wow the national audience very often.

The rest of the country isnt looking at us at all

The irony of all the bitching here is that most of the same people that are complaining about this schedule are the same ones that said that nobody in the Big 12 was good enough to join us in the Pac-12 because they didn't bring enough to the table. The reality is that in the national scheme, OSU, the MWC, the remainders of the Big 12 and WSU are all irrelevant and don't bring enough to the table to be splitting hairs on who's the most irrelevant.

It sucks that we got screwed and the Big 12 is getting screwed less than us (and the MWC) but all the griping in the world about our future isn't going to change the inevitable future. FWIW, my cohorts in the Big 12 know that it's only a matter of time before their piece of the pie gets even smaller. Their happy that they aren't in our spot but they know that the train is coming and they won't be able to get off the tracks either.

It’ll be challenging because we won’t be as good.
Going 12-1 against that schedule gets us to #15. Maybe. 13-0 might get us to #10. That’s the high water mark going forward - no team from a combined PAC-2/Mt.West climbs higher. The bottom half of the top 25 will be a hugely successful season.

Also, should the time come that CFB blows up and P8/10/12 type teams are available to recreate something that mirrors the original Conference of Champions, WSU (and OSU) will not be in a good spot to be considered or picked up.

Who will out West? We’re the best academic program in the MWC, and many, if not, most of the departing p12 schools value that.

Do you think that WSU and OSU's academic standing will remain high. They were already to two of the lowest ranked schools in the conference. Fall behind further in athletics, and it's not like they're getting the invite to get the band back together.

Colorado State is ranked #151 right now in US University Rankings. Oregon State is at #142. Hawaii is at #170. UNLV is at #195. Wyoming is at #216.

WSU? #178.

I expect our academic ranking to improve considerably over the next 10 years.

These Utah State fans think that Washington State will be traveling to Logan, Utah, next year for a football game. Don't know where they got their info, but the original poster seems to have credibility within their forum.
