Manning lands 1st recruit in LA

Great to see Coach Manning working LA for players. This kid should pick up more offers as the summer/season gets going, so it's great we got in early. Manning’s presence in LA is key for our recruiting. When we have mined LA well in the past, we could see the fruits in the W Column. Simmons did well down there and I anticipate a former NFL’er who played at Michigan can top his results in the City of Angels

*** New addition to 2015 class ***

Late to this, as I was out of town last weekend, but Washington State added a commitment from Tavares Martin, a three-star receiver out of the 2015 class who was originally committed to West Virginia.

News of the West Palm Beach (Fla.) Dwyer receiver's offer being pulled was confirmed by his coach on signing day in Februrary, according to the Palm Beach Post. Martin, a 6-foot-1, 156-pound athlete was arrested in April of 2014 and charged with unarmed burglary, theft and fraud.

However, Martin tells WazzuWatch.com that while on a visit to the Palouse last week, he received the go-ahead to commit to Washington State despite his previous problems, thanks to a conversation with athletic director Bill Moos, which we'll detail in a story this week.

In total, before his legal issues, Martin held scholarship offers from some of the country's top programs, including Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State and many others. As a senior, Martin finished with 37 receptions for 576 yards and six touchdowns.

Martin says he'll sign a letter of intent at his graduation party this weekend. This story will be updated.

Moos a success?

While there is an element of "Let's wait and see", I recently found an article from another site, from 2013, highlighting the 4 major Capital Projects WSU had going back then. I then started going through WSU's CAF portion of the website and found the 4 references again. The 4 in no particular order:

1. The FOB (was under construction at the time)
2. The New Soccer Complex
3. A New IPF
4. Baseball Clubhouse (although I think "clubhouse" is a little weak. Complex is more accurate IMHO)

So The FOB, Check. The New Soccer Complex, we've recently heard… Check. And now I've started to hear rumblings that there is movement on the IPF. A friend gave me a link to a Regents proposal by Moos (linked below if anyone cares. Nothing too exciting just indicates movement, IMHO) to update the plans for the IPF and he also told me that there are some "high rollers" that are being woo'ed with "gifts" being earmarked. Side note: I find it interesting with so many of us watching for these regent proposals, that this one slipped by...

Of course, we all have been told this kind of thing for years now… "IT'S ON THE WAY!!!" and it never happen. But I found this encouraging.

In 2013, there were 4 goals, one being close to finishing at the time. We are looking down the tunnel of finishing 3 out of the 4 major athletic projects. That's huge. While I don't carry pom-pom's for Moos, per se, I am willing to see how much he is doing for our Athletic Program. If the IPF comes to fruition (big "if"), I will look at the Moos legacy as a success. And if the IPF truly does happen, I'd also use that as an indicator of his ability, and willingness, to keep going. The IPF won't be the last thing he does for WSU.

Mike Price year 4: 9-3 + Copper Bowl win

5-3 in conference play.

This of course was after his "luck" in year one using "Erickson's players" many of which were JC's and quite resistant to change.

Yes, Mike Price achieved 9-3 and a Copper Bowl win in year 4 with a rebuilt roster in spite of poor funding, poor facilities and only D1-aa coaching experience.

I would think that with all of the advantages WSU enjoys now, I see no reason why Leach shouldn't be able to accomplish the same thing... but I don't think he will this year.

Here is what I do think. I think we are entering a phase that should get us to a 9-3 Copper Bowl 'type' of year... sometime in the next 2-3 seasons. When we do, fans will have lot invested in watching these kids grow... at about the same time Moos is panning for additional revenue to kick in from Pac-12 conference revenue enhancements (to answer the p-12 network contract here: Moos already has this built in to the structure and why Floyd/Regents are backing him.)

It takes athletes to get there. One such athlete, on this roster today... who will leave here a bona-fide Leach disciple, is Cole Madison. I really like everything I see about this kid and believe he's a high round next level pick if he stays healthy.

How about you?

Who is one player who you believe is the caliber of Madison on this roster that we are going to watch over the next 2-3 seasons? we could make a list.

This is a bit old now

But I found a bit on the espn site about Grinch's impact on the defense. I found these two paragraphs to be particularly noteworthy:

Grinch maintains that this early improvement is more firmly rooted in an emphasis on fundamentals than it is in his tweaks to the scheme. He spent his first 15 practices on the new job hammering home basic concepts -- "you almost try to brainwash the guys to understand what good defensive football is," he said -- in an attempt to derail the locomotive of Washington State's 2014 mistake train. The Cougars are coming off a season in which they allowed 58 pass plays of 20 yards or more, the third most in the nation.

"I take a pitcher's approach to defensive football," Grinch said. "No matter what pitches you throw, if you hit your spots, you have a chance to be successful. As long as you're playing with the right fundamentals -- gap integrity, leveraging the football on the perimeter, making sure 5-yard gains don't turn into 50-yard gains, pressuring the quarterback, making him throw underneath -- if you're doing those things, you have a chance to be successful."

Now, if that actually translates onto the field over the course of next season I'll be a supremely happy guy. It'd be a nice change of pace.

I have burning questions - where's that Britton guy.....

How come the site homepage keeps reverting back to the ancient QB Book story?

How come when I log in I go to the national Rivals site and have to backtrack to Cougzone? Oh I mean WW.

Going back to the Moos thread - I thought the Jim Sterk-era luxury suite rendition was pretty similar to what we have now, aside from being on the other side of the stadium.

How come the side where the structure actually went was dismissed pre-Moos? Clearly the engineering was OK.

Big news for soccer

at the lower field. Regents have approved the second phase for the field. Meaning, there will be an actual press box, actual stands for fans (not those horrible metal things from High School), and REAL bathrooms rather than port-a-pottys. Great news here.

WSU soccer is doing well and continually heading to the NCAA tourney and Moos knows (as does President Floyd and obviously the regents) that it's all about facilities. By 2016, our soccer field will be pretty awesome.

Next, baseball. SORELY needed there.
