Basketball trivia

Cooper averaged over 2 blks per game ,playing about 20 mins per game. i think Cooper is a contributor next year. This guy at 7'0 had 8 blks for the entire year. Kwintin Williams visits Portland state today.. I do not believe that the cougs or any major programs are recruiting Williams.

No problem with Cooper. Just don't want to fill out a roster with project bigs. We had 9 scholarship players last year. We have 11 right now. We could be better than last year at that level. Plus Sorn and now Porter are on the board for 18.

I would rather have a more athletic "doughnut" team right now.
I'm still holding out hope for one or two grad transfers in order to have space next year although there is at least 1 or 2 players I could see leaving for playing time.

I still would prefer Kwintin Williams with3 to play but all we are going to get is a project at this point. It's May 15th. Kameron Rooks averaged 4.9 points and 4.5 boards for Cal and he's looking at Gonzaga, SDSU, UConn, St Johns, Georgetown, Illinois, Iowa St, St Louis, and Clemson.

We have Franks, Pollard, and Cooper upfront. We need somebody.

I have been hoping for a Grad transfer without understanding it's potentially not even a possibility. I just read a blog in the Tacoma Tribune that discusses it's not exactly a slam dunk for the UW and therefore maybe not for WSU as well. Here's an excerpt from the blog:

>Essentially, as Durand (UW Athletic Department staff) explained it, the UW does not reserve spots in graduate programs – almost all of which are extremely competitive – for potential athletics transfers, and because the application deadline for many of those programs is in January, there really is little that a potential transfer can do to give himself a chance to get admitted.

Any potential graduate transfer would, in theory, have to apply and be accepted (and meet the same minimum academic standards as any other applicant, meaning a minimum 3.0 grade-point average) on the same timeline as everybody else. For a basketball player, that would mean sending out grad-school applications in the middle of the season, before conference play even starts. That simply isn’t feasible, save for a player who already knows he is unhappy at his current school and has the foresight (and academic credentials) necessary to make it happen.

(Additionally, Durand said only two Pac-12 schools – California and Arizona State – offer a graduate program that admits new students mid-year. So even if UW could admit a grad transfer for football, that player couldn’t enroll until the fall, and therefore would not be eligible for spring practices.)<

I think you also have to find a program your former school doesn't offer. These final 2 spots are going to be interesting because in theory we should have a much better shot at a quality player in the fall than what's currently out there for the spring.

I would prefer Williams also. My guess is that his grades will not let him into a major college. I think that Arinze 6'9, may surprise a lot of people.I would like a graduate transfer but if not, favor keeping them open for next year. . Sorn is a very good possibility while Porter most likely ends up at udub.

Thanks for the information on the graduate programs. I now remember the process and graduate programs have always been hard to gain entry into at WSU.

Kwintin Williams to visit Portland State tomorrow. Who is Arinze again? Oh, Chidom. I'm still thinking he's more of a 3 but he will get minutes at the 4. Maybe it is better to just stand pat and go with what we have and save the 2 for next year. There's also the Garfield 4.

Arinze Chidom will probably play the "stretch four" in the system ,Kent likes to play. He had players who were really too slow to play like he wanted to play last year. The player from Garfield is a highly sought player with offers from several PAC 12 programs.

Stephen Thompson OSU withdraws from NBA draft will return to school. Paris Austin PG transferred from Boise State to Cal.

The mystery of where is the new coach continues.? Kent has been extremely quiet on this one. Basketball recruiting has ended for this period. So unless a player just registers and signs a financial aid agreement the team will not add any additional players. In 2018,one would think that Riley Sorn is scheduled to receive one if he commits. There are some other interesting names on the 2018 want list.

I am guessing we do sign one to a financial aid when we get a new coach and leave one spot open. Wouldn't bother me if they saved both spots

I hope that you are right avabob. However, at this stage,i rather keep the two slots open. Other news Arizona landed Duke transfer 6'10 Chase Jeter . Also Colorado s PF King withdrew from the draft that is 11pts and 7 rbs returning for the Buffs

Perhaps WSU is hiring an ethical coach who wanted to wait until the signing period was over? If so,any signs or charges of trying to pirate other teams recruits would not happen? i guess that we will soon find out.

OSU s 6'10 Drew Eubanks is returning to school. He just withdraw his name from the NBA Draft. he is an importation part of their team

As the coug basketball roster now stands,Arinze Chidom appears to be the X factor. At 6'9 190 pds he appeared to not be strong enough to play PF. However,if he has gained about 15-20 pds of muscle ,he may surprise..Chidom has length, coordination,a 6'10 wingspan, and can move on defense. If he has gained weight and strength,he may be a big contributor. These are big "ifs" and we will have to see.

Here's a KU PF Grad Transfer that needs a home. He transferred from Ole Miss to KU and is a 6'9" 240-ish. He's reportedly looking at mid-major programs like Western Kentucky, Arkansas-Little Rock, Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Monroe. Why not WSU? Something to pass the time.

Arizona s Rawle Aikens is returning for his final season. That is a huge boost for the Wildcats who have Final Four aspirations. Also the coug search for a new coach drags on for another week

E Akot a 6'7 SF and 2018 Arizona commit has reclassified to 2017, and will join a loaded Wildcat team this year.Akot is the 18th rated player overall in the 2018 class and 3rd nationally at his position.

According to Jacob Thorpe, Josh Hawkinson is one of six players who will work out for the LA Lakers Tuesday.

Thomas Welsh returns to UCLA Bruins for senior season. This will really help the bruins this coming season

UCLA s Aron Holliday also choose to return The great recruiting class will make the Bruins a hard team to beat next year.

The preseason rags are starting to come out now that the ink on LOI s has dried. The preseason favorites are Arizona and USC. The teams to challenge them are UCLA and possibly Stanford and OSU. OSU is picked to be vastly improved.. Oregon,is seen a dark horse possibility. The others in no particular order are Cal,Colo,Utah and ASU, Wash and WSU are seen as bringing up the rear of the PAC 12.. I see WSU and OSU as being vastly improved. OSU because of recruiting and the return of Tinkle, It will be a very strong conference. I see CAl, ASU, Colo, and Utah as falling down . Wash will probably be the Conference doormat again this year.

Not sure if we will vastly improve in the win loss column as we do loss 4 seniors and all starters. But I think the team defense could be vastly improved and I think the overall talent has also increased. Though our guards are young I really like what we have and think the competition will be good. My main concern is the offensive production from front court and the youth and chemistry of the team with so many new players.

I don't see how we replace Josh Hawkinson's production but that's just how it goes. Really excited to see what the guards can do.

MiKyle McIntosh (6'7" 235 PF/SF) pursued the NBA draft but will now become a Grad Transfer. He average 12.5 and 5.6 rebounds per game for Illinois State last season. He's originally from Pickering Ontario and apparently has ties to Jamar Ergas. Ergas tweeted out a few things to McIntosh including below.

Maybe he's praying McIntosh joins him in Pullman? More likely just hopes for the NBA since the photo is for a Toronto Raptors workout. We can hope anyway. Current talk is Oregon State, Illinois, and TBD.

Jon Rothstein mentions that a 6'8- 235 pd grad Transfer from Georgetown is considering the cougs. He averaged over 4 pts and 4 rbs in a lesser league. He shot over 50 % and 84 FT%. It is said that he was once a top 100 player out of high school. If he chooses the cougs he will be a good backup. I do not see him starting . I watched Georgetown on TV and i was less than impressed with their players.

With all of the NBA draft decisions made, it looks like Arizona is the consensus number one pick next year. The PAC 12 will be loaded next year and will easily be among the top three conferences Nationally. Despite their losses ,i see the cougs as an improved team next year. They should be faster, quicker, and better defensively. There should be some exciting basketball games in Pullman next year.

Hope springs eternal during offseason. I really like the staff changes and I believe that will translate into better recruits. Despite better defense and athleticism on the roster, WSU is going to miss Hawkinson a great deal. You just don't easily replace that kind of production all of a sudden. I still wonder about the rebounding. The roster, on the whole, looks better.

Glad Cougar

Hawkinson had a great career. However,he was a poor defensive player Between he and Connor ,the defensive effort was poor inside. Hawkinson s ability to rebound is what needs to be offset by a team effort.Likewise, his scoring will have to be offset by the swing players and guards. But i feel that the total production will be as good with an better defensive effort.

Hawk definitely had defensive shortcomings, but I was not impressed by anyone's defense last year for WSU. That includes the guards. Just because a guy is athletic doesn't necessarily make him a good defender if he isn't going to work hard or use the proper technique. Our guards were especially bad at closing out on 3-point shots. You are right to mention the rebounding that needs to become a team effort....but that also requires big guys who can box out other big guys and grab the rebound. You can't ask swing players and guards to do that....Hawkinson was very good in that department.

Glad Cougar

The bigs at WSU will be far more athletic than Hawkinson and Connor. Hawkinson knew how to rebound and that is why he had so many "double doubles" . Defense needs to be a team effort and the cougs will be far better able to switch and help out. Last year, the poor defense of Connor and Hawkinson made it hard for guards to exert pressure. The coaches will have to make the defense better as they now have the players capable of playing good defense.

On the other board someone posted short clips of Ergas, Acquaah, and Chidom. Just workouts and far too short to take too much away but they gave a glimpse of their upside.

I really think Acquaah will make a quick impact and the workout did nothing to dissuade that feeling. He should push Flynn and they should compliment each other well on the court. He looks like he can definitely score if he ends up off the ball a lot.

Chidom looked really skilled. I don't know whether he has Cowgill's quickness but he is very fluid and looks like he could have 'point forward' skills. He's a 'tweener' and will present good matchups down the line.

Ergas was literally one shot but looked good to.

One should realize that he is a 6'9 basketball player with a 9'6 wingspan. I hope that his strength has improved. He looks physically stronger than in his previous videos.
