Oh and I read up on this "censorship". Yes, Republican-appointed judges did say that the Biden Administration, Joe included, "coerced" social media platforms to not spread anti-vax opinions, etc. in supposed violation of the First Amendment. However, in the USA the government cannot censor media. Coerce? Sure - whether cool or not. Censor? Uh, no.
Neither party has done much to advance and promote/improve new candidates. They pick their standard bearer of the moment and stick with them until they either get beat or serve their 2 terms.If you rig the game, then say no one could present a meaningful challenge, the game is still rigged. I’m not sure which side was dumber. Dems decided Hilary was their #1, and had her all but anointed when Obama pulled the rug out. Then when his term was over, instead of putting up someone new…they went back to her. Republicans…after Bush left office they push McCain forward at his looniest point, and burn down the house with Palin. Then they allow 8 years to pass without a real leader, and leave a vacuum that lets the orange one take the whole party by the balls.
Neither side has a good candidate, and neither side has the fundamental awareness to realize that they’re withering on the vine.
What the hell is either side going to do in 2028? There can’t be another rematch - one will be constitutionally disqualified from serving again, both will be past 80, neither will be any better. Who’s going to carry the flag for either side?

Who the hell knows about viable candidates - off the top of my head I can’t think of any Dems and non- loony tunes Republicans. I'm sure there are some out there but both parties are terrible in promoting anyone. I listened to a younger Republican Senator who impressed me last year but now I can’t even recall his name. Shrug.
I voted for HW, whom I consider a great man, his first term but after “no new taxes”, Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill, and his fiasco in Iraq urging an uprising I was ready for a change and voted for Slick Willie in 92.

It doesn't happen often because it is thought that the challenge damages the incumbent. Reagan running against Ford may have helped Carter beat Ford (although Ford was actually an elected incumbent). Ted Kennedy running against Carter in 1980 also might have hurt Carter who then lost to Reagan. I can't think of anyone who was taken seriously running against an incumbent since then.

I don’t recall any instances where a challenger to an incumbent was really even recognized since 1980. A first term president is just assumed to be the candidate now.
Problem is…neither side has a fallback. The Dems can’t possibly think that Harris is the next one in line. And the republicans don’t seem to be able to get behind anyone either - Haley and DeSantis specifically. But who else is there?
