Not Cougar related, but a local story regarding John Kitna

It appears a lot of the image Kitna portrays about himself is a fraud. Ian and Puckett were talking about this story on KJR today. Kitna left Lincoln HS in Tacoma, where he graduated himself to take a job at a Texas HS. It appears that the district broke many rules to hire him. It appears that he demanded and got a lot of concessions.

He left, took coaches and players with him to Texas. Yeah, he "really" cared about his high school. He and his assistants were given pay much higher than was allowed. They made up jobs for wives of the coaches he brought. The coaches were given salaries much higher than they should have. The coaches also had stud sons that went. One of the "coaches" had never coached football in his life, he just happened to have a stud football playing son. Kitna's father also was given a "job".

The district rules stated any candidate must have Texas teaching credentials, which none of them do. It appears he was hired before the job was even posted.

In my opinion, Kitna does not have the morals or the person that he tries to portray.

So looking at Pac-12 ESPN blog RE: WR

Looks like they tab the Cougs as 7th in the conference. I am mildly surprised by this since it seems to me that we have a very deep and talented pool available. They note Dom, River, Lewis and Marks, but seem to imply there is little to no depth which due to style of play means we are really worse off than others. Perhaps, but I am not sure how you would put Oregon above us, as well as many others who only run 3 deep, with 1-2 guys who have proven effectiveness. I get that some of the guys are higher rated, and I would say USC, UCLA, are two I can get with the thinking. So what is our depth? Bartolone is not mentioned (although injuries have certainly been a problem for him), No mention of Green, Lilienthal, Ware, Thompson. No mention of how the RB's catch a bunch of passes, but they do count that towards other schools (AZ with a RB/slot disclaimer for one). No mention of the incoming guys either. Is it a perception that we no longer have depth here? When I look at it I think we are pretty deep, and some of the incoming guys, Sweet in particular along with Dimry could have a chance to add more depth this season.

Couple new notes for Thursday...

Washington State extended an in-state offer out to Kirkland (Wash.) Juanita athlete Salvon Ahmed today. The 2017 athlete, rated three-stars by Rivals and listed at 5-foot-11, 182 pounds, also holds offers from Montana State, Utah and Washington.

The coaching staff also checked in on La Habra (Calif.) linebacker Jacob Colacion, a three-star outside linebacker out of a familiar high school. As you may recall, incoming JUCO transfer Aaron Porter played at La Habra, as well as wide receiver Brett Bartolone, and as his coach noted in a tweet today, Colacion may be the next in line.

In addition to Washington State, Colacion holds offers from Arizona, Boise State, Fresno State, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Northwestern, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming.

Some Thursday recruiting notes...

A couple new offers out

Washington State stayed busy on the recruiting front as they continue to evaluate players on the road. Oxnard (Calif.) Rio Mesa receiver Steve Houston picked up his first offer from the Cougars on Wednesday. He's listed at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds.

The Cougars also offered a 2017 tight end on Wednesday, Jimmy Jaggers, candidate for the class all-name team. Name aside, Jaggers is listed at 6-foot-3, 237-pounds and probably projects as a defensive end at the next level, similar to the rest of the tight ends the Cougars typically offer.

In addition to Washington State, Jaggers holds offers from Louisville, Michigan, Northwestern, Oregon State, Utah and Washington, who offered yesterday.

Staff visits Idaho defensive tackle

Coach Yost and Salave'a stopped by Pocatello (ID) Highland on Wednesday to check in on defensive tackle target Wayne Kirby. The 6-foot-3, 306-pound lineman also holds offers from Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Weber State.

A couple new offers out...

I just spoke with Ventura (Calif.) C.C. offensive tackle Tyson Rising, who I posted about earlier today, and he tells me Washington State came through with an offer last night.

The Cougars also extended an offer out to Mililani (HI) wide receiver Kala Timoteo this week. He's listed at 6-foot-3, 197-pounds is currently committed to Hawaii.

Wednesday recruiting notes...

Parkinson picks up Wazzu offer

Washington State extended an offer out to Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian 2017 tight end Colby Parkinson yesterday, according to Rivals analyst Adam Gorney. The 6-foot-6, 270-pound prospect also holds offers from Tennessee and Washington.

Hawaii OL likes McGuire, WSU

Just days after picking up his first Pac-12 offer from Washington State, Honolulu (HI) St. Louis offensive lineman Nate Herbig tweeted some encouraging news for the Cougars on the recruiting front. "Pumped about WAZZU," Herbig tweeted. "I like what Coach McGuire is doing out there." Herbig also holds an offer from San Diego State.

New JUCO targets

The Cougars have two new JUCO targets, according to JUCO Football Frenzy. Ventura (Calif.) C.C. offensive lineman Tyson Rising and wide receiver Riley Smith. Rising, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound tackle, holds offers from Colorado and Utah State while Smith, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver, holds offers from Georgia State, Idaho State, San Jose State, South Alabama and Texas State.

A few recruiting updates...

Washington State continued to send out offers over the last 24 hours, including a big offer out in Hawaii to Honolulu (HI) St. Louis guard Nate Herbig. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive guard prospect is rated two-stars by Rivals and also holds an offer from San Diego State.

Herbig was a star at the Los Angeles Rivals Camp, earning top offense honors following the event. "Herbig was too big for linemen that tried to go through him and even those that attempted to get around him found the task difficult," Rivals analyst Blair Angulo said. "He traveled a long way to showcase his talents and that mission would certainly be deemed a successful one, as Herbig demonstrated the strength to lineup against anyone."

The Cougars also extended an offer out to Rialto (Calif.) Wilmer cornerback Marcus Strong yesterday. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back also holds an offer from Oregon State. I'll work on getting comment from strong shortly.

A name to watch in the future is Lompoc (Calif.) outside linebacker Toa Taua, who picked up his first offer from Washington State today. He's a 2018 prospect, so it's unlikely you'll hear much in terms of his recruitment for a year or so, but the 5-foot-10, 190-pound sophomore-to-be is a monster on film. He's going to be a good one.

The Cougars may be on the outside looking in as they try to land Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco cornerback Traveon Beck, who listed Washington State in his top five with a decision looming tomorrow.

However, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound defensive back, rated three-stars by Rivals, is likely down to Cal, San Jose State and Arizona State, per a source. The Golden Bears, who came in with an offer this week, and ASU both look good in his recruitment.

That's all for now.

Lets talk about RUTGERS

Assuming that for the first time in the Leach era, we'll start 1-0, so I looked at some Rutgers info lately, seems much more productive than some of the other threads.

QB is still up in the air, between Laviano, who was last year's backup, and Hayden Rettig, a four star recruit who transferred from LSU.

They'll have a new running back, and are looking for a second receiver to go with Carroo, who is their number one.

They lose three of the five starters for the OL, and only had eight OL available for their spring game.

On defense, they bring back most of their front seven, and had one rusher in particular who was making the Rutgers OL look so bad that they pulled him in the first half of the spring game.

In the secondary, they shifted their returning corner to safety, so they'll have experienced safeties, with new corners.

I think the kicker is OK, but had a down year last year.

Anyone else know more about them?

movement in the Pac-12

I was reading a blog by espn and they have WSU ranked 10th ahead of the Beavs and Colorado. I really see no reason why WSU isn't ranked ahead of UW and Cal. Those spots are clearly up for grabs by a team like WSU. I see WSU more clearly as the 7th or 8th team.... this year. Even Utah is not unbeatable, per our win over the Utes in SLC last year.

You wanna know why WSU is struggling???

2 high school kids left from Coach Turd's 2011 disastrous recruiting class.
8 high school kids left from Coach Leach's 2012 hired late to the party recruiting class.

That's 10 kids that have 4 or 5 years in the program. That simply isn't enough to push WSU into the upper tier of the conference.

I read posts all the time about how Leach should have WSU in a bowl this year or else his seat should be hot! Whatever. 10 veteran kids? 12% of your roster is going into their 4th or 5th year in the program. That's a lot of young bodies on the field.

I wrote on this board in 2011 that Turd was going to screw WSU and even if he rebuilt it to a bowl game, the next rebuild job was coming after his 2011 class. He signed 21 high school players, 6 of which never showed. Of the 15 high school kids (which is essentially a USC sanctioned recruiting class), how many finished their careers? How many made it 5 years? Didn't we all listen to the "doing it the right way" crap about redshirting your entire class???

Coach Leach took over a disaster. The fact that some fans are so short sighted that they can't/won't/don't/refuse to understand that it takes time to develop a program OR that WSU has never had any kind of sustained success.... ever, yet they are unhappy with the state of the program because they thought he'd win more games??? Simply amazing.

CougEd is dumb.

"I would not be surprised at all if he is one of the first four or five quarterbacks taken "

Well....the rumors of the demise of Connor Halliday's NFL potential have been greatly exaggerated.

I would have been shocked if he was taken higher than the 5th round. Given the need for QB's and the lack of depth in this class, that's right about where I had him pegged. Seems like scouts and GM's think even more highly of him than most of us who generally favored him do.

New Depth Chart

Didn't know if you saw that the new depth chart is out.

A few observations.

1) Our offensive line averages well over 300 lbs

2) We have 10 different guys listed in the OL two deep for the first time in years

3) Defense is switching to a 3-3-5.

I'm happy that we have a bunch of upperclassmen on the lines in particular.

Enemy within...

A GREAT article on how some of the great coaches look for dissension, team chemistry, leadership and making sure little pockets (or big) of naysayers influence as little of the team as possible. Everything from kicking off 2 of the best players without warning anyone (including all coaches), to having a "leadership council" of players that are proven to be on board, bought in and willing to lead and confront those not "buying in". VERY interesting to see how even the smallest of "dissent" can really affect team chemistry, at least according to these coaches.

Great ESPN article:
