Observation on visibility

Reading the ESPN PAC12 blog and listening to the commentators yesterday for the Duck spring game an emerging topic that is being discussed is how, or will, the bottom teams in the conference improve and become competitive. They each have mentioned 4 programs WSU, OSU, CU and Cal.

They have discussed where 3 of those programs were, are and where they see them going, there was one program that was not detailed in any of those discussions, guess which one.

Whether it's apathy, visibility or lack of a program buzz seems like this program is now a nonfactor in conference discussions. That is not a good thing.

Baseball, Marbut, and Bunting

No one talks about baseball here and it isn't even obvious where one is supposed to post a baseball comment.
Anyway, I do so today just because Marbut's obsession with bunting led me to my boiling point. A great afternoon for baseball and a 0-0 game going into the bottom of the 9th. With the Coug's leadoff hitter on Sagdal comes up. He is our leading hitter. Ariz puts on the wheel play with the Ist and 3rd baseman charging and the 2nd baseman breaking for Ist. Any ground ball to the right side is a hit. Nevertheless Marbut has Sagdal bunting. He gets it down--not really a bad bunt--but the Ist baseman picks it up and gets the force at 2nd. So Marbut has now wasted his best hitter on a equally wasted out. To top things off the Cougs lose the game on a dropped fly ball with 2 outs in the 11th and then leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th. Oh well it was better than watching the Mariners get swept by Houston.

Satellite Camps

There are Big Ten schools setting up shop down South and running camps. Great way to meet kids, see talent, evaluate talent, etc. I don't know that they're going to leave with the lions share of talent down there but I think they'll start landing a few guys here and there.

Would satellite camps help the Northwest schools? What if Leach and staff could set up a passing camp in Southern Cal? Think the best QB's and WR's in SoCal would show up to see what was cooking in Pullman?

OT: Orioles Game tomorrow

"With Baltimore burning, Orioles announce they'll play ballgame tomorrow but won't allow any fans in."
-Sean Lahman, SABR analytics

Without getting too much into the political/racial tension obviously involved (this isn't the place for it, not that it isn't important), this is unprecedented. First game, in any sport, that has been intentionally "banned", or nicely put "closed to the public", for fans.

No word on TV coverage of said game but originally on regional coverage, only.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

OT: Pac 12 Men's Golf Championship

In case you haven't been keeping track the past couple days, this is being played in Pullman. Right now, after 2 rounds and in the middle of the 3rd, Maverick McNealy from Stanford is leading… THEN WSU's own Derek Bayley (I believe freshman) is with him today, behind by 1 overall. In 5th place overall is Michael Anderson from WSU. WSU is doing well!

Tomorrow is the final round, I'll be down there and hope to see a whole bunch of people there!

Where are our $25M donors?

Was listening to the talk radio the other day and Bob Decarolis (sp?) the OSU AD was on, and he mentioned that right after Riley left and Anderson was hired on, they had 2 donations come in for $25M.

We've spent some time on this board criticizing the lack of donors and the seeming failure of the CAF, but I think what is overlooked is that Moos has failed to land the big fish as well. I feel like he thought he could just ctrl+c ctrl+v his formula from Oregon and get it to work up here, which it did to an extent.

My biggest worry is that apathy is setting back in, and with the continued mediocrity of the football team I fear that when they finally ARE decent the fan base will say "yeah, we've heard that before" and be uninterested.

Thoughts on the spring game

Bender clearly has the best arm, Hilinski the best feet and Falk has the best command of the offense. Nearly four years in and the most dynamic player on offense is a Wulff recruit -- Dom Williams, not good. But with Marks back, we will have several WRs who can find wholes in coverage. In the battle of the Titans, our DLs vs our OLs, no one stood out, the run game wasn't there, nor was the pass rush. Splitting the OL up might explain the lack of a run game, but the DLs should have feasted on the situation rush wise. No such luck. Best DB is White, by a mile. The fact that Dom Williams looked like Usian Bolt, does not bode well for our DBs. Farrar? Move Green to DB? He is the fastest kids on the team, and only seeing spot duty on O. Was there a freshmen/TR out there that impressed you? Green impressed last year, I didn't see anyone like that this year.
