UPDATE: Note on WR Lavan Alston...

Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure receiver Lavan Alston confirmed he'll officially visit Washington State on January 16 tonight and says he'll also visit Nebraska on January 30, according to his Twitter account.

Oregon State and California are the two other schools in the running, however it appears Washington State, OSU and Nebraska are the three schools it will come down to for the three-star receiver. Alston was previously committed to Oregon State, but when Mike Riley left for Nebraska, he opened his recruitment back up.

His primary recruiter at Oregon State remained on the Beavers' staff, so a re-commitment wouldn't be out of the question. Dennis Simmons has done a good job of recruiting Alston and I think Washington State has a very good shot here.

Where are we relative to the rest of the Pac 12...

While I think 2015 is another losing season, and losing Cooper early really hurts the rebuilding process, are we miles or feet behind UW who loses their front 7 on defense, and their front five on offense, with no QB on the roster?

Are we neck to neck with OSU or slightly ahead of them as they lose Mannion and their recruiting hasn't been the same lately.

Cal is ahead of us because of their QB. But Goff will be gone after 2015. We are in the same race as they are.

Stanford and Oregon are miles ahead of us. How we close the gap I don't know. It wont be next year, but 2016 I could see beating one of those teams.

CU- they have come a long way but have a long way to go. Their speed in below average on defense. We are neck and neck.

Utah- Ad just blew that program up they way Rawlins did. Unreal.

Where we are behind is UCLA, ASU, Oregon, USC, Stanford and Arizona.

another DC elimated from consideration

According to Coachingsearch, Todd Orlando has accepted the DC position at Houston. He would be replacing David Gibbs, who went to Texas Tech.

Edited: I notice that this has been reported on the free board. Anyway, it refines the selection considerably as there are only a few left who have been discussed: Pendergast, Gregory, Ball and Orgeron, who was featured in a write up on brand x. (I do not consider Choate to be a feasible selection.) Unless I have missed someone, it is one of these, a mystery man or somebody working in the NFL. Any other ideas?

Holy freaking perdition:

I just lost at least 10 years of my ever-dwindling lifespan by watching the Cougs eke out a 69-66 win over California. Given, they had no business being in this game in the first place, but having a 6-7 point lead in the final two minutes and damn near blowing it was mind-bogglingly frustrating. Up five with less than 20 seconds left, than having Iregbou fail to inbound after a made bucket, giving up two technical foul shots----excruciating. But, given all that, Hawkinson continued to perform at an all-league level, and Railey is actually evolving into a serviceable big man. If Lacey can keep himself on the floor and start hitting shots anywhere near the rate we are accustomed to, this is a decent team and Ernie Kent is earning my begrudging respect as a more than decent coach. Whodda thunk it?

UPDATE: Maihen sets official visit...

Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic offensive tackle Austin Maihen tells WazzuWatch.com he'll officially visit Washington State on January 23. Maihen has applied to Stanford, though he hasn't heard anything in regards to the admissions process.

"I haven't heard anything from Stanford for admissions," Maihen said. "I'm just excited to get up to Wazzu!"

UPDATE: Note on WR Desean Holmes...

Shortly after de-committing from USC, Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany receiver Desean Holmes said Washington State was one of the programs he was considering, however he tells me today that he has no plans, as of right now, to visit Pullman.

Other receiver targets still on the Washington State radar are Equanimeous St. Brown, Dahu Green and George Wilson, who is currently committed to Utah. St. Brown mentioned at the UA All-American game that he was mulling a potential visit to Wazzu.

STORY: Lewis talks top three, Michigan...

Our new Michigan site, Marcus Lewis to discuss his top three, decision timeframe and new interest in Michigan with Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor.

"Washington State is a great program. I really like it out there," Lewis said. "People that haven't seen the campus would probably be like, 'Washington State?' but it's really nice out there. I like Coach Leach. As far as me playing DB, I'm going to get a lot of balls thrown at me playing against the top wide receivers in the Pac-12.

"My mom likes all of them: She likes Miami, she likes Kentucky, she likes Washington State. She went on all of my officials with me so far, and she'll be down in Miami with me on the 16th. She likes all of them, and it's going to be a hard decision."

UPDATED: Defensive coordinator search (1/12, 9:50 a.m.)

As Mike Leach searches for his next defensive coordinator, I'll use this thread to provide updates on what has been a quiet search thus far. Several targets are already off the board and there has been hardly any leaks as the search pushes into its sixth week.

Monday, Jan. 5 updates
-Washington State athletic director Bill Moos, on his weekly radio show with Bud Nameck, says he's hopeful there will be a defensive coordinator in place "this week or early next week, at the latest." Moos added that he's been in contact with candidates and he expects the hire to be an impressive one.

-Houston defensive coordinator David Gibbs has been a rumored candidate but it appears he's close to agreeing to take the same job at Texas Tech, according to FootballScoop.com.

-It's official, David Gibbs has been named the Texas Tech defensive coordinator.

-A report came out yesterday, also from FootballScoop.com, that Mike Leach "visited" with Louisiana Tech defensive coordinator Manny Diaz recently, though he's likely to interview for the open Miss. St. defensive coordinator job.

-Manny Diaz has officially been named the Mississippi State defensive coordinator. His deal, according to multiple reports, is for three years and $1.8 million.

-According to a press release, Houston has hired Utah State defensive coordinator Todd Orlando to the same position. Orlando was another name rumored to be a potential candidate for the Washington State opening.

Tuesday, Jan. 6 updates-Jacob Thorpe of the Spokesman Review tweeted tonight that he "heard a candidate is being interviewed on Thursday." Working to see if I can gather any additional information.

-
FootballScoop.com tweeted today they're "hearing the hire is still a few days out." I haven't been able to confirm a timeline. I would expect this to wrapped up soon, however, which would mesh with Moos' comments yesterday.Wednesday, Jan. 7 updates-Jacob Thorpe of the Spokesman Review reported today that he hears the next defensive coordinator may be a "young and hungry" coach. Mike Leach is expected to interview a "preferred candidate" tomorrow, according to Thorpe.

Thursday, Jan. 8 updates-Former USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast is "in the running (with a small number of others)" for the vacant Washington State defensive coordinator job, according to a FootballScoop.com report.

-On Twitter tonight, FootballScoop.com, who seems to be the most tuned in to the Washington State defensive coordinator search, says they checked in on the search this morning and "it sounded like it was a few days out."

The account then responded to a Twitter user who mentioned that the lack of news was "weird," to which FootballScoop.com said "It would be great if he had a great hire already; but I'd rather see him be diligent and get one he believes in than rush and just get a guy." I've been sayin', guys.
Friday, Jan. 9 updates-According to a Twitter report by AggieUp.com, a Utah State fan site, Hawaii defensive coordinator Kevin Clune "is a leading candidate DC candidate at Washington State." It's an interesting name, though one that doesn't make a ton of sense, however anyone who interviews at this juncture would likely be considered a "leading candidate," regardless.

Hawaii's defense in 2014 was very comparable to Washington State's and the secondary and sack numbers were very underwhelming. It appears Utah State fans have been wanting Clune to return as the defensive coordinator replacing Todd Orlando, who left for the Houston job. I'll see if I can gather additional information.

Monday, Jan. 12 updates-According to a radio report from FootballScoop.com yesterday, Washington State is expected to hire a defensive coordinator "tomorrow or the next day." That would fall in line with what others and I have been hearing over the last few days. Here's the full transcript of FootballScoop's radio session talking Washington State and a potential front-running in Clancy Pendergast.

"Mike is interviewing guys this weeked. He had a guy in, I think, Thursday, had a guy in Friday, I think he's got a guy today, I think he might have one more. This one might be the one where Clancy Pendergast actually gets hired. You know, Clancy was the former USC defensive coordinator; he's been all over the place. I know down in Baton Rouge, he was initially to have been involved there, but Im' not too sure that ever really was the case. But for Clancy, this one might be the right fit for [him]. He's a known commodity up there, knows the Pac-12. When people were talking about the LSU search, I said 'that doesn't make any sense.' He has no current SEC knowledge and, you know, at a school like LSU you need somebody that knows the current SEC. Clancy knows the Pac-12 and he knows it inside and out. This could be the one that he gets. But, Mike had some very impressive guys that he's been interviewing, bringing in an aggressive, blitzing front. I'm excited to see who Mike ends up settling on, and I think you will hear that tomorrow or the next day, you're going to have someone hired there."
