Talking about the bomb, Ernest Bevin, Labour (left wing) UK foreign secretary, had this to say in 1946, "We've got to have this thing … whatever it costs. We've got to have the bloody union jack on top of it."
This is what he had to say to the British cabinet, not following a meeting with Vyacheslav Molotov as you might suspect, but following a dressed down meeting with Truman's Secretary of State James Byrnes. Prior to that meeting, as a good socialist, Bevin was for scrapping military spending and UK bomb development. After the meeting, it was "we will eat grass to have the bomb."
Now imagine how bad THAT meeting went...
