Bohn fired two senior assistant AD's and a assistant AD. While SC's athletic department is rather top heavy and has a lot of assistant AD's of varying responsibilities, the ones who were canned had been with the program for a looooong time. Plaschke's LA Times column put forth a good case (and Plaschke is a good writer when he is not trying for a tear-jerker article) that Bohn didn't want to replace Helton and bring him in to the existing athletic department problems. Plaschke's take is that Bohn is going to try to first clean house in the athletic department between now and this fall. Then Helton will either succeed spectacularly (minimum PAC championship) and stick around for a while, or he will be gone, but regardless the problems that both Bohn and the new SC president see in the athletic department will be dealt with first.

As a side note, I think Helton's future is totally dependent upon Harrell's success. SC will have a somewhat better than average defense. If their offense leads the PAC, Helton might live to fight on another day. If not, he will probably be gone. I give him about 15-20% odds of success, and it will all come down to Harrell. It will be very interesting to see how SC's recruiting class shapes up. The doubt about Helton's future really hurt them in the early signing phase. Now we get to see who they use to fill out over half of their recruiting class.

It’s slim pickens now. SC is gonna sign guys they usually wouldnt even speak to. Or choose to not sign anyone at all and save the $ for another class.
