Personally, the high point of the article for me was the analogy of being left on the helipad in the Saigon bug out.
Something that I have heard is going on in the background is an effort to get an extension on our 2 year deadline...putting it past the Aug 1, 2027 date. Prob not a lot of chance of that happening, but it would certainly introduce another dynamic.
The $65 mil from the PAC money would negate the penalty for 6 MW teams. That gets the league to 8. The question as to whether a team would pony up $20 mil to come along for the ride is not as big an obstacle as it first appears...the media revenue noted above is the biggest part of the financial picture, but not the ONLY part. The biggest variable as I see it is the appetite of the networks that do not have college football to pick up a reorganized PAC. The success level of CW this season is going to play a role in that, but there are also other things going on in the media world right now that will play a role. I'll throw out one, since I've heard it said here in LA more than once this year...what happens if Netflix decides it wants to add college football (one of my partners actually heard that said within Netflix's building)? And that is only one scenario that is completely out of our control.
IF I were handicapping, my order of likelihood would be as follows:
1.) Reorganized PAC, with the majority of the added 6 coming from the MWC (but potentially one or two from out of the MWC). I think this is the most likely option if the CW does well this fall with our games, because either the CW or another network will see the opportunity.
2.) Something relating to the ACC. That could happen in a lot of forms, and it all hinges on whether FSU, et al, can get loose.
3.) Full reverse merger with all MWC teams....with some sort of "perform or get out" clause for the new PAC. This is the easiest to see coming as the fallback position.
4.) B12 decides to take us. That will happen only if a network wants it. At this point I don't see that happening.
5.) We get an extension to our 2 year grace period and kick the can down the road. I don't see this happening, but I rule nothing out, except:
6.) What WILL NOT happen: independent or us moving into the MWC. The PAC brand will not be dropped. Before that would happen, either #1 or #3 above will happen.
