Not trying to say all is right... but we could just about anything we want to if we'd concentrate on signing a great Oline.

Build a house... build a foundation

We should become the highest paying school for Olinemen first... Dline second... linebacker 3rd

We can find enough intelligent QB's who know what to do. We will never be paying millions and win with them.

However... $500,000 to our new Fat 5 and we could make a difference

How do you struggle so much on defense when the HC is a former DC at the school?

How is the HC not able to hire a DC that is competent?

How is the HC not able to help that DC if needed?

How is the HC not eventually held responsible for the circus caused by his piss poor hiring on the side of the ball that should be his baby?

As an AD, how long do you watch a team so poorly coached and a revolving door of coordinators before stepping in and telling the HC he will be the next one fired?

The absolutely crazy thing is that a well coached WSU team prob is in the playoff. Enough teams will have lost down the stretch that WSU has a shot at sneaking in. But no. It is poorly coached down the stretch and WSU, again, pisses away opportunity.

I’ll add one to your list, Mateer pussyfoots around a DB on 4th down near the marker instead of putting his shoulder into him like he’s done every other play of the game. Second time this happened (fortunately we got the spot on the half slide in a previous game). Is that Mateer being a dumbass or coaching/lack thereof? Probably a bit of both. FWIW if he just puts his shoulder down on that 4th down against Wyoming we probably win by two scores and may not be having this conversation.

For me, it’s the inconsistency in multiple games. In particular the NM game and the head scratching start to the second half, which I’ll stand by my previous assertion that Arbuckle was play calling for Mateer to go off for 500 yards and 7 TDs to get him into the Heisman race instead of mixing it up with Parker and grinding out first downs. And the offense stalling out is why we lost that game.

And what happened on Saturday against Wyoming is unforgivable. But I think Arbuckle may be checked out anyways if he knows he’s jumping on another opportunity.
Not sure I buy Arbuckle "checking out". Who the hell would want him after the Wyoming game? Oklahoma? Really? I guess if he brings Mateer with him, which is doubtful.

"Better play calling" is all fine and well. What happens when say Hutson drops a big gain or maybe a TD, the OL craps their collective pants, Mateer for reasons unknown scrambles up to the LOS then dances around and fires a dirtball instead of just tucking and running like half a dozen times in one half, somebody draws a flag, etc.? Are those bad play calls?

We were 22nd in total offense, 12th in scoring offense, 30th in redzone offense. That's with a first year starter at QB and mediocre OL. That tells me the play calls were nowhere near as bad as you claim them to be. As I have said, my criticism of the offense is that there needs to be more production from routine plays. But, I'm not here win or loss whining like crazy. And you're nuts if you think Arbuckle should be fired.

Your reasoning is lacking.

We saw great OL play under CML for pass protection. Run blocking was meh, but I'd wager still better than the production we've seen recently.

The biggest problem with a strict AR is not having a QB who can make a read pre-snap and know where the ball is going, even if that means he's going to the check down on the second read. We get QBs who are in love with the deep ball and hold the ball way too long looking for a play that never develops.
The point I am making is that we have been way to inconsistent with running the offense the two years Arbuckle has been the O-Coordinator. Our OLine cannot run block very well and most times our RBs are having to use great field of vision to find what little holes are available to them. But I agree with you about the QBs holding the ball too long.

To make the best of an unhappy ending...

Its been determined by the Cougar fandom police that you aren't allowed to have anything but positive feelings about losing to 2-9 Whyoming even worse than they lost to 4-5 OSU and even worst than they lost to 4-5 UNM.

We are the lowly Cougs and you should be happy with anything better than .500, so get over yourself you thankless wretch!
Get help.

Literally nobody claimed this.

Well, you said you weren’t “content” being shut out in the second half against Wyoming. Would you agree if the play calling was ok we probably can scrounge up a field goal and at least win the game? Damn near same thing against NM. We scored one TD in what, 6 second half possessions against a undermanned defense. Sometimes it seems like you are arguing against yourself.

IMHO, one of the basic tenets of CML's offense was the wide OL splits. Does any "Air Raid" offense do this, including WSU's? I believe not. Just because you run crossing patterns over the middle or 4 verticals at times does not make yours an Air Raid offense.

When Arbuckle jets

I think we need to jettison the Air-Raid. That offense has run its course and for whatever reason, our coaches and QB's have never solved the drop 8 into coverage dilemma. We need to go back to the R&S or maybe implement a more RPO/Spread style offense. The Air-Raid in particular, IMO, confuses our O-Line consistently and many of our plays get blown up. Time to scrap it because it's not working as intended.

In general I’m in agreement with you but I’m not sure how many teams are running a pure air raid anymore. I’m pretty sure QB counter isn’t part of that offense and we ran a lot of that.

What I hate about the air raid is the lack of play action, and the empty sets. If you’re running a lot of empty you’d better have Tom Brady behind center or running a QB designed run out of it every 3-4 plays to keep a defense honest. Running that with a new QB who’s still learning how to go through progressions is dumb.

And when you can run the ball, run PA passes FFS. It helps your OLine out and gives the QB bigger windows. Only time you should not be running PA is when the entire stadium knows it’s gonna be a pass.

I'm never unhappy about beating the fuskies and having a better season than them.

Mateer (and even Ward) made noise for WSU this year with the success we had... they had... and have WSU inside of them.

I loved seeing the majority of the other Pac sellouts suffer.

If we finish 8 and 4 again next season we should be more happy happy... joy joy than declaring end of the world.

Sub side note to this...

Htf did we just lose to Wyoming? I'm really having a hard time finding a dumber loss in our history. Maybe the 2nd loss to Idaho? Ewu? Portland State?
How about blowing a 32 point 3rd quarter lead vs ucla?

Schmedding out...

WSU Cougars fire defensive coordinator after rough end to season

PULLMAN — Jeff Schmedding is out as Washington State’s defensive coordinator.

The Cougars announced as much in a Monday release, announcing Schmedding will not return as the team’s defensive coordinator. Schmedding worked that role for two seasons at WSU, whose defense left much to be desired this season.

“I appreciate all the hard work that Jeff has had for our program during his two years here in Pullman,” WSU head coach Jake Dickert said via release. “After evaluating our program, we have not met the standard defensively, and I felt a change was needed for the best interest of the program. I informed Jeff this morning that he will no longer be the defensive coordinator and wish him well in his future.”

Playing eight Mountain West schools this regular season, WSU finished No. 90 nationally in scoring defense, allowing an average of 28 points per game. The Cougars permitted 255 passing yards per game, No. 116 in the country, and they yielded 174 rushing yards per game, No. 96.

The Cougs also missed 157 tackles for the season, seventh-most nationally.

Under Schmedding’s watch, the Cougs’ defense was the main culprit behind several losses. In WSU’s loss to Oregon State last month, the Beavers racked up a season-high 41 points, more than their scoring outputs in their three previous games combined. Going into that game, OSU was coming off a scoreless loss to Air Force.

In the Cougs’ setback to New Mexico in November, Lobo quarterback Devon Dampier piled up 193 rushing yards and three touchdowns, concluding with the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds. UNM ran the same variation of a QB keeper for much of the game, and WSU rarely found ways to slow it down.

Washington State also permitted 28 points in a win over Utah State last month, seven coming on a long touchdown rush with the game out of reach. The Cougs limited Hawaii to just 10 points and Fresno State to 17, but they also gave up 52 to San Jose State and 30 to FCS Portland State.

Schmedding served as Boise State’s defensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020 under head coach Bryan Harsin, who brought Schmedding with him when he accepted the head coaching job at Auburn in 2021. In 2022, when Harsin was fired midseason, Schmedding was the only assistant retained by interim head coach Cadillac Williams.

After that season, when Hugh Freeze took over Auburn’s full-time head coaching job, Schmedding was not retained. That led him to WSU.

Schmedding started his career at Eastern Washington, where he worked for 15 seasons in various roles, including special teams/safeties coach in 2011, when the Eagles on the FCS national championship.

Post season thoughts

I used to pass through Dillon and tried numerous times to get a job there. Beautiful town and area!
Yes, nice area. Was there a couple times over Labor Day in late 70's, good party. Saw the Air National Guard plane crash there, crazy thing.

Also had some very good fishing in some beaver ponds out west of town somewhere.

Yup, every poster on here no matter how much I disagree with them on football or politics has posted something of value at some point. It’s such a chickenshit move to put people on ignore and speaks to your own insecurities.
There are only a couple posters that I have on ignore. One is because their posts were too long and convoluted for my brain to handle and scrolling past was too much work. Another was someone that eventually got booted from this board because they were too damned toxic even for this place.

Other than that....yeah....scroll past.
90 - I agree with you, barely. There are a couple of posters whose value could be stored in that little change pocket on my Levi's.

Flat - I think I know who you speak of. Surprised #2 hasn't resurfaced, as has the Phoenix-like Loyal One, spreading my wings of knowledge, guidance, and all-around wonderfulness among the huddled and downtrodden WW masses. :) Although since I now live in his town and know who he is and where he lives he is smart to stay away.

P.S. Hey Gibby - the smiley face above denotes that I am making a funny. True stuff, but still funny.

Good news for Dickert fans

I have a wonderful sense of humor. In fact you could learn from it.

I admit to being tired of people bitching and moaning about a coach and staff that went 8-4.
I'm searching my massive brain (I'm like those guys with the huge heads on that Star trek episode). However, I can't lay my mental fingers on one post that you have ever made where there was a hint of humor, a smiley face, or any other sign of mirth.

Perhaps your laconic posts mask your humor. Perhaps your sense of humor is sooo dry that we die of mental thirst before we reach your oasis of mirth. Whatever the reason, perhaps you could alert the board when something humorous is afoot so that we can prepare to burst out laughing or at least grin like the Cheshire cat.
