Seems like the right partner, at the right time.

There has always been pressure to win; that is nothing new.

And there have always been richer programs with less patience if a head coach does not relatively quickly produce wins with advantages in facilities, budget, crowd size, etc.

But imagine today's increased pressure on AD's to keep fans happy enough to pony up massive amounts of NIL money (way over and above their previous contributions). The alum groups who can arrange that unregulated, unrestricted cash now have an even bigger lever, and I don't think they will hesitate to be obnoxious if the AD is not getting results. As a result, AD's pressure on the head coach to win RIGHT NOW by assembling and getting onto the same page a group of kids who had not played together before has to have increased. And that means that the assistant coaches are now more visible. The pressure to identify and buy talent to win RIGHT NOW has never been higher. As Biggs says, coaching matters. But now you have a grab bag of players with some experience, but that have never played in your program or in your system before. How much do you have to "dumb down" the playbook, at least to start the season? Many, many teams have large numbers of semi-experienced kids (many of whom the team badly needs in order to succeed) who show up on campus for the first time a month or two before fall practice starts. That sounds like a really big challenge for the assistants. The assistant who is all things: a great talent identifier; great recruiter; great fundamentals coach; great scout of the other teams; great game planner; great chemistry builder in the locker room; great amateur psychologist...is a unicorn. There are not many unicorns out there.

I'm wondering how much the average tenure of a P5 football coach will shrink over the next year or two. Especially for the HC's in the top 1/3 of each P5 conference in terms of NIL money available. Those guys better win IMMEDIATELY; after all, the alums will see big roster turnover and will, in fact, be directly paying for that new roster. They will want wins. The AD's won't be much better off; they might survive by firing a guy and making a splashy new hire, but they won't survive two failures in a row.

The AD's will have to find money for assistant coaches, because a flashy new HC will not be able to get there without the right staff. There simply will not be enough time to get the team all oriented in the same direction. And the AD & HC turnstile will spin a bit faster every year to come, at least until somebody does something effective about the NIL corrosion of college football.

Semi surprising that Powell staying in draft.

He is not in any mock drafts, no G League invites. Powell has gotten positive feedback from NBA, but it's probable that he either goes undrafted, gets a G League invite, or gets a overseas contract.

He is making a mistake, and should have stayed at WSU.

He won't be that hard to replace as Yesufu, Rice, Darling,Kymany, Jabe, plus whoever, whatever Transfer portal transfer, grad transfer, JC transfer, HS recruit, etc, collectively can, probably will be a ok replacement for Powell.


247 says that WSU has been working with Spencer Mahoney the most, and the hardest, and said Spencer had a great visit, and said after the visit that WSU has not only made Spencer's favorites list, but also is considered the Front Runner.

Spencer has gotten offers from Syracuse, Seton Hall, SMU.

Depending on who, if WSU replaced Powell with, WSU should still probably win about 16 to 20, 18 average, games in regular season, about 8-10, 10-10, 11-9, 12-8, in conference, tied for 4th in conference at best, or tied for 5th, alone in 6th, or tied for 6th, alone in 7th, at worst, in conference, about 8-4,5, 10-3, 11-2 in Noncon, maybe 1 PAC 12 tourny win, NCAA 2nd round elimination, 11th seed, Bubble in/NIT Elite 8 bubble in, CBI Final 2 at worst, about 19,20,21,22,23,24 total wins after the tournaments, season is over.

I think that's a realistic projection range, considering all the roster upheaval.

Smith does a great job of finding players . But they seem to want to take the first opportunity to leave .

Efe would have been better off in college. Jackson could have developed better at wsu. Bamba, Powell Gueye , Rodman . I think the Rodman situation was everyone left, leaving him where there was the Big Dance in his head then reality hit everyone was leaving . And then there is the money.

Yesterday was the last day to pull your name out of the draft and return to school. It was a long shot Gueye would return but Powell I thought we had a good chance of returning. 2 spots now open, not sure who is lined up for either spot but looks like Spencer Mahoney is in the mix for one spot. It looked like he was slotted for Gueye’s spot but maybe it was Powell’s spot and something else was already in play for Gueye’s spot.

I have been reading reports the Holiday Bowl is suing UCLA and the PAC12 for 3 million for when UCLA pulled out of the Holiday Bowl on short notice because of Covid. It was a huge financial hit for the holiday bowl so they withheld the payment to the PAC12 the following year when Oregon played to make up for the loss. The PAC12 threatened to sue for payment and it sounds like the Holiday Bowl did a preemptive strike with their suit and they may have a case. It also sounds like a nasty divorce between the conference and bowl game may be coming which would be a shame because this is a long time association.

Hey cougars. I’m a fan of a big ten team playing Fresno state this fall. I was kind of taken aback by your box score against them. Was their defense really that good or did Washington state perform poorly? Or both

I have so many that I will share if this thread takes off. But my first is sitting in the Coug at the window with a couple of buddies. Across the street this gal at the Chi Omega house on the upper floor is changing her clothes. She got down to bra and panties, then looked out the window and saw us staring at her. Needless to say the curtains closed immediately. Pretty funny.
