WIRE: Taeon Mason talks flip to SJSU...

Pasadena (Calif.) Muir cornerback Taeon Mason pulled a shocker on Signing Day, inking a national letter of intent to San Jose State after being committed to Washington State for a couple weeks. The former USC commit talked to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune about the decision.

"I just feel I can progress more and better myself on and off the field at San Jose State," Mason said. "I also feel more comfortable there. I was thinking about it this whole week after I came back from the San Jose trip."

So now that the sky has fallen

Let's take a look at what we have relative to what we need.

As others have mentioned, the offensive and defensive lines (offensive in particular but not always, and it's improving fast) have cost us a ton of games, and both units got a lot of love. I still wish we had gotten Paulo but otherwise this is a solid group of players that will make everyone around them and behind them better. Leach always had good offensive line play at Tech and I think this offense really requires it to make everything hum the way it ought to. I know people are most excited about Myers and Price, but Madison may end up being our best offensive lineman and not many folks were excited about him two years ago. McGuire is doing a good job steadily upgrading this group's play and talent level, and the numbers game is much more favorable now than it was. I actually wonder what fall camp will bring, because aside from the tackles (Dahl and Madison) I would wager that there are other guys on the roster that will push the other returners very hard for time. That can only be a good thing, and it will give this class a little time to cook.

We got another high-quality quarterback locked up early and that gives us three at the position and an early favorite for the starting nod that saw a lot more action than we anticipated this season. Barring an injury to Falk I figure Bender and Hilinski will duke it out in the fall of 2016 for the backup spot and the best man of those two will still give us a chance to compete.

At running back I still wish we had a guy that could run through arm tackles more effectively. Wicks can do this but he was banged up a lot, Morrow will probably be better with another year of conditioning and I'm actually really excited to see what Harrington can do, though I think production from this group on the ground is contingent on more physicality up front (not just run blocking but pass blocking, those splits create lanes for a guy like Harrington to burst through, but they can only open up if you trust the line to hold up well being that far apart and handling the guys across from them). Williams will likely redshirt with his knee issue and we'll see what he can do after that. Price used to chase down high quality JCs regularly to fill this spot, and I would have loved to see one in this class.

As others have noted about the receiver spots, losing Burnett hurt a lot (but if the kid would rather walk-on at USC than take an immediate ride here he clearly wanted to be a Trojan and I doubt he was that in love with WSU) but I'm ok with the Dimry/Green tradeoff (Green won't be a conference opponent and Dimry gives us someone to use in the red zone) and if Sweet really is Cracraft with wheels then I'd love to see him redshirt (he's got three similar players ahead of him in Cracraft, Bartolone, and Tyler Baker) and then push for a starting job next year. Priester will have to sit for a year but we have Marks and Dom Williams coming back so we have a starting pair at the outside positions. Depth behind them may be an issue for a season but this system attracts lots of receivers so that's an area of need next year that's in this program's wheelhouse. The flips here hurt our rankings, but they weren't at a weak spot on the roster. Galvin left but Lewis and Green and Bartolone all return so we have plenty of slot guys. Myers and Kristoff Williams were nice players but Marks and Dom are just as good on the outside. Mayle's departure is the one that really hurts because that presence can't be replaced. Barry Ware may end up being the closest approximation.

The defensive line really should be more able to shuffle people in and out this year, though losing Cooper a year early hurts. We still have Paulo, Barber, and Vaeao with lots of experience and guys like Fernandez, Tapa, and Ekuale coming up, plus likely immediate help from Mitchell and Mattox and Toki. McLennan would likely be more effective with his hand in the dirt so we'll see how Grinch uses him. Fehoko is a guy we may not see on the field for two years yet, but when he shows up I bet he makes plays. Oguayo may take longer to grow into his body and find his technique. Overall I'm excited about this group because there appears to be some pass rushing ability here AND the possibility of moving back to a 4 man front if Grinch chooses to. I like the versatility of the overall group now a lot more.

Linebacker is the other place where the class just evaporated, and the problem here is that this actually is a position of need. Aaron Porter will probably provide immediate help, and Leniu and Luvu coming off of redshirts will push Pelluer and Allison, but who takes over for Coen? Su'a? Taylor? Luvu? Greg Hoyd? Hanser? These guys are either just names or haven't been able to crack the lineup for a while now. Palacio may or may not end up on the line but he makes plays either way. This might be the thinnest spot on the roster now and a lot of the help we thought we had coming flipped on us, so to me this is the real disappointment on signing day. Tago may be a player but it'll be two years before we really know that.

We have a lot of interesting names at corner now and even if Brown is gone I really like White and Pippins, plus Porter can redshirt (thought he should've last season) and Farrar and LaRue will be able to push for time. Harper is a bit of a flyer but Broughton will be able to come in and contribute right away. This is a green bunch, but there's talent here to work with. I figure they'll take their lumps this season but it could pay off down the road.

Safety was super thin coming into this class, but between getting Singleton in and signing Luani and Powell I feel much better about it now. This may be the position that got the biggest short-term upgrade, and it's the position that most needed it. Lemora is a physical presence at strong safety but he's no burner, and while Hameed can play I'd love to see him redshirt. Dotson may never get on the field with his injury issues, I'm not sure where Markell Sanders fits into the secondary picture, and Bucannon might never emerge, which leaves us with Taliulu, who is physical enough but not fast enough to start back there. Luani probably starts right away here if he's what we think he is, and Singleton, Powell, and Hameed give us something to be excited about for the future.

I like the constant chatter about kickers coming in to compete, because Lord knows we need someone to emerge there. Dascalo was a pleasant surprise as a punter, but we may need a new long snapper. I figure the coverage teams will be better with some of these guys coming off of redshirts but there's a lot of work to do in that area.

I was disappointed with the way signing day played out like everybody else, and I won't say it doesn't matter, BUT, the only area where the day's events really hurt the roster, to me, was linebacker. Losing Moi, and Tezino, AND Rudinski, in quick succession, was a big blow in a place where we need help. We needed more than we got there and at running back, but the lines got a nice influx of new blood, we got another good quarterback recruit, and a much-needed injection of talent at safety.

Luckily, running back, linebacker, and receiver are all places where JCs can come in and make a difference right away. After this week, we may need them to.

Find a JC linebacker

And we would have signed 25, pretty much addressed a lot our needs and had a strong recruiting class on the OL and DL. Not the top 30 class we wanted, but that 2004 top 25 class really paved the way for a lot of wins. Oh wait, none made it to campus. It would be a solid class for us considering we are 21-65 since 2008.

Those with offers but still no LOI

Below is a list of all the players out there, according to Rivals, that have offers from WSU but have not signed the dotted line with anyone.
Obviously there are other "things" going on, grades, as an example. but interesting to see whom is out there that has an offer, and hasn't officially committed. I'd also guess Rudinski is just a database thing within Rivals. Britt would be able to clarify why he is being shown as "no sign".

Eddie Rudinski 3star LB out of CA

Desean Holmes 4star WR out of CA

Hunter Dale 3star DB out of LA

Je'Vari Anderson 3star ATH out of CA

L.J. Reed 4star WR out of CA

Jaylon Lane 3star DB out of TX

Cameron Haney 3star DB out of CA

Terrance Jackson 3star LB out of CA

Brandyn Lee 3star WR out of CA

Caleb Potter 3star LB out of CA (JUCO)

William (Amu) Auwae 2star OL out of HI

Jacoby Herring 3star WR out of CA

People need to quit crying

Yes it is unfortunately that the best recruiter the on the offensive side of the ball got a new job at a school that has won multiple national titles. And with that we lost several recruits.....

But at least we are at the point that big time national programs are after our assistants.

USC wanted coach Joe. Oklahoma wanted Simmons.

We are at least hiring people now that big programs want and we are getting kids that the other big programs want too.

Despite losing our best recruiter we still closed with a decent class, and one that on paper looks better than anything we have had recently.

We really need to get rid of this woe is me crap attitude our fanbase has all the time when the slightest thing goes wrong.

WSU has always been the school that despite not being paved in gold we would roll up our sleeves and be defiant in pursuit to accomplish things when other people said we couldn't. That's always been our way, but for some reason sometime around 2003 on we started to have this "sky is falling", "I'll go to the game when they win", "I'll leave at halftime", "Oh no the new coach wants the players to work hard they can't handle that they are just kids!" soft cry baby attitude.

None of that is Coug mentality. At least not the mentality that I know. The coug mentality I know is a guy from Georgia heading to WSU on the GI Bill and then going on to be one THE faces of sports journalism and respected by millions.

Or a guy that came to WSU and joined Phi Kappa Theta only to leave for Boston to start some Billion dollar company with some thing called computers and software.

Or the people that were so determined that if Gameday wasn't going to come to pullman they were going to make sure WSU was there wherever gameday was. Any city. Any time. Every time. Since.

Or the kid that goes into the NBA and just breaks the scoring record for a quarter and 3 pointers for a quarter. Of all time.

Our real history is about doing great things that nobody expects us to because we could care less about what the expectation is, or what people say is or isn't possible. We don't give a damn about any of that bullsh*t. We just go out there because and do it because we believe we can, will, and have done it. It's all we do.... and we will never stop and sit and cry about a setback. We live for setbacks because it makes it that much sweeter when we do go out there and make incredible stuff happen.

That's what being a Coug is all about. I never forgot. I hope others will remember.

The beauty contest is over ...

wipe your eyes and get over it. At WSU we will never win the pageant, or even come close. It come down to whether our coaches have evaluated talent and character well. It always has been and always will be. This time 13 years ago we were favored to win the conference because we were considered the best and deepest team in the conference. We did that on just one recruiting class that was considered in the top half of the conference.

Put the pom poms down, go on Hudl and other similar sites and look at the play of the kids we actually have, and look for the holes in their games, put that critical thinking you were taught at WSU to use. Compare them to past Wulff and Leach classes. What are your thoughts?

I see significant improvement in athletic ability in this case over the prior Wulff/Leach classes. Are they good enough for us to take the next step? I just don't know because I can only judge them against classes that left us 12th in athletic ability in the conference. But it is a definite upgrade. Look at Sakaria for example, he has great feet and balance and could probably play DL, and this was one of the last kids we extended an offer to. If we want a better run game, this is the type of kid you need at guard. a kids who doesn't need zone blocking.

Sean Harper CB commit

I viewed the tapes on Harper. 6'1 -173 S/CB, He is fast (4.42) and quick. He needs a lot of technique work and weightlifting. He has poor tackling technique and is not real physical. However,he has the soft hands of a receiver and he is a good athlete. He had strong interest from both Nebraska and Louisville but was probably the victim of the number s game. Overall,i would say that he has more long range upside than past recruit Willie Sykes who went to Nebraska. He is probably 2 years away and good coaching, nutrition and weight lifting will make him a contributor. He is a good pickup at this late date.

Clealry time for an uplifting Aron Baynes update......

Pounding the rock has a nice recent article on the Big Banger.

Britton; clarification on blue shirting

I'm not clear on whether or not Burnett actually has to pay for a semester out of his own pocket. I've read conflicting reports on that.

The plan is for him to be added to scholarship once fall camp starts. That would be sometime in early August. Classes don't start until some time in late August. So, assuming scholarships are effectively immediately, he'd be on scholarship by the time he enrolls in schools and attends a class.

Basically, the way I understand it, you're adding a scholarship player, but delaying the "cap hit" till the following year. Kind of the opposite of counting an early enrollee back to the last class.

Bobby Petrino does it again

Bobby Petrino is the biggest slimedawg of them all. He had a player that had been committed for eight months. A player that was loyal and shut down his recruitment when he committed. Petrino had too many player commit, so he withdrew the offer---yesterday.

But, that is not the worst. He wasn't even man enough to tell the player, Matt Colburn, himself. He had an assistant do the dirty work.

Petrino is worse than scum

Kind of disappointing...

... to see how many people are "advocating" for the idea that Simmons should have been deceptive about his future so that we could have gotten a one year bump from recruits who wanted to play for a team with him on staff.

I don't like seeing the class torpedoed, but I like less the idea that grown men on here want a grown man like Simmons to lie to teenagers, for the benefit of us as fans.

Oh no, we didn't accrue enough mystical internet star-points!

Man, what could've been, right?! We were so close to having more completely useless star-points than we ended up with!

What a bummer today was! I'm so upset I feel like I've been kicked in the nuts!

If only the completely subjective ratings performed by non-college coaches were more favorable to us, then we could've enhanced our standing on a list that puts an overall value to all classes based on factors unrelated to the actual program needs or coaching staff evaluations!

I mean, there's no real flaw in a system that would rate a class of 25 4 star linebackers as better than a class of 25 3 and 4 star kids who are spread around in positions of need for a particular program. You know, because that makes tons of sense.

But alas, it's February and what else do us non-pedophiles do other than obsess over the actions teenage boys? I certainly can't wait to get all this football out of the way so we can build up to next season's NSD.
